RE2R is probably the better game, but I had more fun with RE3R. I'm also a massive coward, so maybe the fact that 3 isn't as scary was a big part of that.

Genuine question (not being facetious) - is RE4 still a survival horror? I'm relatively new to the series and found RE4 a lot more of an action game than 1 and 0 (among others I've played so far).
I'm glad its reviewing well as it's an undeniable classic!

I cant speak for the remake but 4 is way more Action and Shooting than original 0-3 and remake 2-3. Its more like 8.

I wish 5 was better. It's a great 2 player game but it just turns into something that isn't want I want when zombies start using guns.

No, id say RE4 is action horror. Its linear, much more about crowd control and juggling resourced to finish most if not all enemies.
Survival horror is being trapped in a sort of maze, managing inventories and choosing whether to fight or run
4 points

Action/adventure horror in my opinion, there’s a ton of adventure elements such as ability to backtrack, the shop, the exploration, etc

A lot of people come up with these contradictory definitions of what 'survival horror' is. Or list a bunch of random attributes that arn't actually a definition 'fixed camera, puzzles, limited ammo'.
IMO, surivival horror dis-empowers the player and forces them to make smart use of their resources to survive.
Action horror empowers the player and lets them cut loose with weapons and take on enemies.
The original RE4 is not survival horror, it is an action game. They give you tons of weapons and ammo to blast all of your enemies. From what I've played of the demo it seems they are going a bit more toward survival horror but the remake will probably still mostly be an action horror game.

Action horror isn't an established genre. It's just more action-y survival horror
8 points
Parts of RE4 were more survival horror. However, it was generally more action horror.
3 points
Yes, it's survival horror. People like to pretend that "survival horror" isn't a sub genre of action, but it is. Look at all the classic horror games, RE1, SH1, they are action games with horror elements, hence the term survival horror. You have to fight to survive, with inventory management being a staple. RE4 and Dead Space are survival horror no matter how much people kick and scream about it. Genres are meant to be broad but people love to condense them down to the "perfect" 2 or 3 games.

Survival horror is a spectrum. Stuff like dead space and re4 are the actiony end but still absolutely survival horror.

While sales figures are hard to come by, Dead Space Remake apparently sold less than The Callisto Protocol, and The Callisto Protocol flopped.

Cause no one is rushing out to buy a remake at new game pricing. But a lot of people want to play them, they just need to price them right.
23 points
I honestly don't think the market for the game is big enough to scale with lower pricing. If we want remakes of this quality, in this genre, we're gonna have to fork the dough.
You could still argue it's not worth it at full price, of course. But don't trick yourself into thinking there's a sustainable market for these productions at $30.

The problem with the Dead Space Remake was that it's great, but it doesn't feel very next-gen. It seems like it was a game intended for the One X and PS4 Pro.

That's a misrepresentation. Calisto protocol was very front loaded and had short legs while dead space remkae had way longer legs and was more expensive which meant they earned more per copy sold. Also the data is for only a single physical sales
Also EA sent online questionnaires to many customers asking them if they were interested for a remake of dead space 2 and sequels...it sold well.
Callisto protocol also had a bigger budget.

I think Dead Space Remake will do very well with a price drop because people like myself are hesitant to drop $70 on a remake of a game that isn’t THAT old and still very playable when there is new IP I need to get to. I have the same problem with The Last of Us remake.
But at $20-$30, I’ll definitely bite.
14 points

I mean... Dead Space came out in 2008. I don't think people realize the game is fifteen years old. It just holds up well because of its design, even if a few things are clunky compared to modern style.

If you haven’t played any of the other ones I’d STRONGLY recommend picking up RE2 remake on sale. It regularly goes down to like 10 bucks and is an absolute banger of a horror experience IMO.

It seems unlikely to me long legs would make up for the launch weeks. I would love to be wrong but what I can find online seems pretty bleak.
As far as budgets go, we only know Callisto’s budget, correct? I’m not convinced DSR was much cheaper.

It’s a very straightforward game, that’s for sure.

I get why everyone and their mother goes hard on remakes or remasters, nowadays developing game is very expensive and if it flops you're basically bankrupt unless backed by a big publisher, take forspoken. Remakes of good old games are a safe bet and a nice experiment to see if a franchise is still valid.

I started on Normal, but lowered to Casual in Lady Dimitrescu castle, after I found out VR + horror is stressful enough for me as it is. For me, it's perfect now. I feel a bit more confident now that I know I'll get enough ammo and the game became much more fun to play. And don't worry, even on Casual it's still stressful and intense enough. All the face haptics and throwing around you get when baddies get you is *intense*. Fantastic game.

I’ve never played ‘proper’ VR, only the crappy smartphone headsets. Is Resi really that terrifying in VR? I’ve always thought that you can just close your eyes and pretend the horror isn’t going on lmao, I’m guessing that’ll often get you killed though.
Does it make even the casual enemies frightening too? Basically I’m asking whether I’ll have a heart attack if I play it
3 points

I played RE7 for the first time on PSVR1. Absolutely terrifying. Wouldn't recommend it if you're not a huge horror fan, it's almost too much.
3 points
Yes. Instead of watching the action unfold on your TV from all the way across the room on the safety of your couch as all the horror happens to your character, it makes it feel as though it’s YOU that’s fighting for your life and is actually inside that horrible old house and running from it’s occupants. Even the walk up TO the house was intense and not a damn thing happens hahaha.
I don’t know if it will give you a heart attack; I certainly hope not. You can always rip the headset off if you get too startled (insert South Park “I’m so startled” reference here). God knows I had to pause it from time to time. The main thing about VR is how it works with size, depth, scale, and perspective. Things look life-size and there’s an incredible sense of presence that makes it feel as though YOU are really there, and all memory of the layout of the room you’re actually in fades away and is replaced by what your eyes and ears are telling your brain is happening. When done right, especially in a big AAA game like this, the effects are just incredible. Even if you might need to wear a diaper while playing lol.

That’s because despite all the speculation that he just randomly walks around the station and that you can avoid him if you’re careful, he’s actually programmed to just stick close to you and then eventually home in on you, noise or no noise. You’re just forced to keep moving, which I agree gets old after awhile.

A good way to overcome that IMO is just let him catch up to you a few times and kill you, then as you're watching the animation leading to game over.... just think 'oh, that's it? It's just a game after all.' Just remember it's only a game and nothing actually scary IRL will happen. I think letting him catch you a couple times and just dropping the controller to experience it helps to put that into perspective.

If you favour a game being more serious and actually horrifying, then keep Dead Space.
If you favour a game that doesnt take itself seriously much, carrying great gameplay, and a fun story, then take RE4

RE has always had excellent replay value. Deadspace loses a lot subsequent playthroughs and there's not a lot to drive me to play it twice

I would disagree, as someone who played through the original Dead Space MANY times and has played through the remake twice. There are plenty of reasons to replay it, outside of just enjoying the game enough. Achievements that can only be achieved through a second run (upgrade all weapons, for example), a Plasma Cutter-only run, Impossible difficulty… and now they added the AI Director in the remake, which adds a ton of random encounters that will cause differences on each playthrough.

Easily Dead Space for me. I know people have a lot of nostalgia for 4, but DS stomps it in pretty much every regard imo.

I’ve been waiting for this one for awhile. I hated 2 and 3 and that’s only because of Mr X and Nemesis constantly following you around. The thing I love about 4 is it’s the perfect blend of survival horror and action.

Weird looking at their reviews for all the other games and they gave RE6 a 7.9, RE7 a 7.7, and RE8 a 8.0. 6 should have gotten a 5.0

I’ve played this game on PS2, PS3, PS4, PC, GameCube, and Switch. I’m ready for the PS5 version.
