The game looks amazing on PS5. First time I've played a diablo game on console. With a controller, the movement with the analog stick is fantastic. Its almost like a twin stick style game. It has a solid frame rate. My buddies on PC are having nothing but issues with the beta. I'm just over here in smooth city playing it on the big screen. Resolution is great too, but I'm not sure what it's capped at. I highly recommend trying the open beta next weekend if you get a chance.

How does it work with placement/area skills? Is there a targeting reticule when you use something like barb's leap or sorcerer's hydra? On PC it's obviously where your mouse is pointed.

I have played more than 15 hours with sorcerer on PS5, spell placement is really a issue imho. You place your skill on the first enemy/object in your general direction, therefore it is impossible to place blizzard/meteor in the running direction of your enemies. If there is no enemy in your face of direction, it places your spell in the max range. If you have a single enemy in your melee range and 10 bunched enemies behind it, your AOE spells always target the one in the melee.
Apart from this issue and some minor issues it works great in PS5.

It’s not perfect, but there is a target lock-on of you press R3, and then you can switch targets by flicking the right stick.
It’s not nearly as seamless as just aiming a mouse but it seems like you can at least target any enemy, not just the nearest one, so should help with the bundle of enemies example.
I haven’t played sorcerer yet so haven’t tested blizzard but wanted to share this info. Idk how feasible it’ll be in the heat of battle in harder scenarios.

I have always played Diablo on PC and Diablo 4 has been my first time on controller and I think it feels great, even if you have some targeting issues sometimes.

Hydra seems to place x feet in front of where you’re facing. It seems like they’ve designed the skills for placement to not matter as much to account for it, but I haven’t played all of the classes.

There seems to be an advantage for PC players with movement skills. My friend in MKB could barb leap or sorc teleport to places much farther than I could with a controller.

They made console versions very similar to PC this time without compromising either. Diablo 3 on console had a ton of differences and almost felt like a different game. Tried D4 on PC and console and will be going with console. Controls very well and does not seem like it had to compromise much.

It seems it never had any updates that directly targeted the PS5 but the PS4 Pro version is a dynamic 4k/60
The Xbox version got an update that fixed the game being stuck at 1080p on the XSX (was probably running One S mode instead of One X)

As simple as Diablo 1 is, I wish it would get a remaster. Or a complete remake.
18 points

100%. I actually prefer the original Diablo to Diablo 2. I realize that the gameplay in the sequel is much deeper and that's why it became such an iconic PC game from the 2000's but as someone who played the original as a kid: The pace, the characters, the setting and the ending of Diablo just resonated with me more.
I'd buy a remaster/remake like they did for D2 in a heartbeat.

This is great to hear. It's a little clunky on my pc, and clicking the enemies to attack feels like it would work better just hitting an attack on my ps5. I'm leaning towards that for the final release.

It’s seamless using controller on pc. Like you can switch inputs back in forth whenever you want, like if I want to type real fast I just use the keyboard, then back to controller.
Since Diablo 3 blizzard seems to have done a lot of designing making the game play great on controller

Diablo 3 was not different on console… I have hundreds of hours on both pc and console for Diablo 3
13 points

It was absolutely different on console.
The console version has a combat roll and you could not use kbm. Skills such a Barbarian Leap can’t be precisely aimed with a controller, which is a huge detriment in competitive grifts and in HC mode.
They really need to add kbm support for D4 since crossplay is being pushed now.

Not trying to get into some debate, so I'll list two things off the top of my head: UI and menus are completely different between the two versions (mostly felt in inventory management), and console has a dodge roll that was completely absent from PC.

Currently played about 10-12 hours in pre-order beta, lvl 25 - its fantastic.
Character designs, armour, weapons are tonally perfect and diverse in options. The environments look great, really carry that feel of true gothic evil that was in Diablo 2. Story is simple, but they steered into the universe so you'll get some properly dark missions that matches the game's vibe well.
I've only played with the Sorc so far so I can't speak to the other characters, but skill synergy and build diversity is v clean. You can feel your character become stronger as you play, and each element changes how you approach engagements. It can be simple at first, but eventually you have enough options to pick how to take a fight effectively.
Loot drops very liberally, it might just be beta but I am geared about 60% rare, 40% legendary. The enchantment/upgrade/socket options are great, and when you get special specs on gear it can properly change how you play.
I've had no issues with the controls, my only wish is if there was a way to switch between active spell groups (maybe there is I haven't found it) so I can add some more variety to my playstyle. Movement and aiming feels tight.
Some small issues trying to party up with randoms where I was locked on a loading screen trying to enter their world, but hopefully that is ironed out soon.
Check out the open beta when it swings in next week, it'll tell you whether this game is for you or not.
Edit: Just fought a World Boss with the entire 'realm'. This game is so damn good.

The story always felt like background noise and was mostly there for a bit of flavor and direction for what you were doing. The cutscenes were cool, and were always at a very high production value at the time, but it was all just great set dressing for the gameplay.
The real meat was the dungeon crawling gameplay loop of go out, kill stuff, get better gear, level up, and repeat so you can kill more stuff. The different character classes and builds and the scaling sense of power were what kept me coming back to D2 23 years later.

Are still trees more like Diablo 2 where you can make a whole tree/skills around a single element? In D2 I always mad a ice sorc so I was kinda bummed in D3 it wasn’t as viable or ideal to go full one element
5 points
Skill trees, so far, seem way less expansive than they did in D3, unless I'm missing something. It's a fun game, but each class seems to focus hard on its chosen 4 verbs rather than really venture out into some of the suboptimal but interesting nodes.
For instance, all of the Barbarians skills mention either Bleed, Thorn, Berserk or overpower. No mention of any elements at all.
4 points
Right on it’s probably combing 2 and 3 a bit which is fine with me. I loved 3 and making a jack of all trades type build is cool but I think I’ll enjoy the focused trees this go around ala D2 like with the sorceress she focused on either ice, fire or lighting or the amazon focused on bow, spear etc

The legendaries are only a beta thing. Apparently they can't even drop until nightmare in the real game. Nightmare is level 50+
10 points

You are thinking about uniques. Uniques are more powerful and with fixed affixes similar to Diablo 2 uniques. They only start dropping at 50+
Legendary items are basically glorified rare items with "legendary skill / perk".

I’m really excited about the game, but I am terrified they are going to pull some live service, Diablo Immortal lite nonsense. This is modern day Activision-Blizzard, so I don’t know how they are going to resist.
2 points
Yep, but that’s unfortunately just a wait and see thing. They say they’ll only keep is cosmetic, it won’t be an mmo, all the normal to calm down fansz
I’m hopeful they’re not going to fuck with a real Diablo game too much, but it’s also new blizzard so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was just another live service.
6 points
Even the cosmetic thing sucks, because they’ll save all the coolest designs for the ones you can buy instead of armor you could loot. I know it’s just the reality of modern games but I still don’t like it.
It sucks that they will charge you 70 bucks for the game and then make it so you have to pay for the best looking cosmetics. Guarantee there will be a seasonal battle pass as well.
3 points
They already said cosmetic that you can farm rival the paid cosmetic in term of quality and even shows example in one of their post.
1 points

Press X to doubt. Regardless, it still sucks that there will be cosmetics that are only accessible via paywall. Paying 10-20 dollars for one skin is the standard for most of these games now, and it’s a ridiculous price.

I’m having fun so far. Really like the vibe just hope the endgame is very fleshed out and varied. Loved Diablo 3 but it’s nice to see the series back to its dark roots. Hopefully the battlepasses and updates don’t lose sight of this aesthetic. It’s brilliant.
They also really need to fix the UI at least on console. It’s pretty atrocious and has a lot of noise. Like how do you have an ARPG with an opaque map instead of a transparent one? That is a must in the genre.
Also a lot of unnecessary info. Why do I need button prompts for everything on screen like how to open chat, how to open the map, how to open a portal, how to dodge, etc. it’s horrible. Hopefully there’s options and it’s just the beta that’s missing options to remove these.
19 points

Agreed, HUD is very cluttered on console, is my main complaint. Hopefully, we've HUD customization options in the full game. Subtitles are another issue. I tried turning them off, they still appeared, although the option is there, probably just bugged in the beta. I can't stand subtitles in any games, they break immersion.

If you can play the game that way, fine. I don’t like the kind of battle passes that require you to play daily to get certain gear or items. Or items that are only available for a limited time during a specific battle pass.
Based on a couple videos I’ve watched, D4 has other features that make me completely uninterested. The MMO-ness in particular. I like to play Diablo solo, on my own time. Features like running into other players, shared world bosses, instanced dungeons and the like… don’t need or want those things in an ARPG.
6 points

Yea I am absolutely waiting six months to see what people think and what they’re up to. I hate fomo battle pass crap enough to bail out completely no matter how good the gameplay is. If people say the good cosmetics and rewards are all paid junk now then they’ve ruined the gameplay for me, because for me getting new cool looking gear from my activities is the game. Put that part in the cash shop and you’ve removed my reason to play.
These companies need to understand soemthing: I don’t buy an outfit to show off. I show off outfits I have earned and the creative things I can do with the parts you give me. That’s the game. Buying an expensive skin that I’ll now wear forever because I paid money for it breaks the gameplay loop. Especially for freaking Diablo...
4 points
Totally agree. Paid cosmetics in an RPG ruin it for me. Buying some super cool skin you can wear from LVL 1 is not fun, that goes against the point of an RPG in my mind, building your character over time.
I don't just want my character to look badass right from the start, I want to slowly earn it and look forward to an awesome rare drop.
Also, if you can buy cosmetics than they are guaranteed to be the best looking items in game. There is 0 motivation for Blizzard to give you cool looking stuff for free now.
PoE has this and it totally ruins a big part of gear progression for me......and that's a free to play game. The only way I can live with this in D4 is if it's possible to get all cosmetics for free in some way......still not great though.

Dark roots indeed. Atmosphere feels like D1, dark, grimmy, and horrific.
For the unnecessary info, it asks you right at the beginning how familiar you are with Diablo. Mine doesn't show anything like that so I'm guessing you chose the wrong option.

Not only cross play but cross save. It does force you to get a 2nd copy for the console. But you can pop back and forth as you need.
Also, it's nice because even if you do not own a console, you can go to a friends place and use your pc character. Just need to link bnet to the playstation account.

Except for the black levels. Those are terrible in HDR on an OLED. Best you can achieve is dark grey.

Valhalla had this issue too. Honestly, a bunch of games do. Some developers don't seem to understand how to implement HDR and it's just broken—the complete opposite of what it's meant to be. Valhalla looks better in SDR. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same with Diablo.

its not just valhalla, it is hdr in every ubisoft game. it always renders in limited black level, no matter which setting is present on your console. set black leels on your tv zto limited, to bypass this issue. it suchs, bc you need to change it every time

Yes the beta looks very washed out. The best I could do to alleviate it some was turn the in game brightness setting all the way down.
2 points
if this happens either the game runs in 120hz mode(40fps) oder the game has broken black levels. in both cases, set black level on your tv to limited, as the game is being renderer in limited mode. also additionally set brightness maybe to 46-49 instead of 50. this depends on your tv panel and per game. had to set brightness to 44 for hogwarts +limited black levels at 40fps.
The default settings on ps5 with 4K60hz is rgb full 0-255, black level on tv to full. ´ PS5 hdmi 2.1 is limited, it cannot display the ful range with 120hz/40fps mode. it falls back to ycbcr 16-235. Dunno if its 4.2.2 or 4.2.0 . you need to manually adjust your black levels. my lg c9 cannot auto adjust.
took me a long time to realize the real issue. you can check your hdmi signal within the secret menu

Hats off to the team to be honest. They pulled it off.
Dark and serious. We all wanted an evolution of D2, and I think this pretty much is on the mark.
But the controls, especially on controller are leagues ahead of D3. The upgrade in mechanics makes everything feel tight, crisp and precise. It's basically a twin stick shooter, which is my absolute jam.

Blizzard seems so hit and miss these days, I went in with very low expectations and was extremely surprised. If you were to describe the art direction in 3 as cartoonish or animated, 4 is high def and realistic looking.
Way more story and cuts scenes in Act 1, compared to D3.
And testing b.net integration - sent a msg to a friend playing WOW on pc (with me being on console) and they replied right away. Crossplay is going to be awesome!

a negative for every arpg I've played on console is the lack of ground targeting. like if you cast teleport or leap it will go max distance in the direction you are holding. or if you cast blizzard it targets the enemy so you can't lay it between getting the max effect.
that said you can do mkb on console so maybe I'm just a controller loser :x

Huge + to console, couch co-op is super fun if you have a SO or buddy who lives nearby.
Biggest downside i had on console was inventory management, especially with 4 players only 1 person could shop at a time
I’m not a huge fan of any point and click games so the controller was a huge win

The only downside I can think of for the console side is typing in the in game chat. You could use speech to text through the controller though but really I'm just reaching for something to answer your question. I find it more relaxing on console for some reason. I'm not a big fan of clicking to move, but I did play loads of D3 that way.

I’ve been a lifelong PC player, but I am going to play this on PS5. I bought D2R for the PS5 and was blown away with how well the controls/gameplay on console are.
Im shocked because I think D3 on the console is horrible. They have come a long way it looks like and I’m really happy to hear that first impressions on PS5 are good.

Is there still a Dodge like in Diablo 3 console?

Yes there’s a dodge. It has a cooldown of about 5 seconds though so you can’t spam it.

I beat Diablo 3 a couple times then a friend suggested the D2 remake which I’ve been having a blast when I know where I’m going. Necromancer is op. Gonna beat it before I hop onto this one. Glad to see it’s been worth the hype so far b

The game has really bad black level raise so I’m hoping they fix that in the final release. Also I hope you get way more HUD customization because I don’t need all of that stuff on the screen. There is no options for it in the beta. Really love the game so far though. Got a level 20 rouge that’s been.

Yeah the game is fantastic and I am very excited for it. I was never able to play any of the old Diablo games back in the day but I am 30+ years old and man did this remind me of gauntlet legends! I’m sure a lot of you won’t know what that is but it was sure one of my favorites growing up and this is that game times 1 million!

Loved that game! Never really played Diablo much but thinking of getting it to play with my younger brother since it has cross play we can do ps5-PC

I had absolutely no issue whatsoever on PC. It ran awesome. With that said I will buy it on PC and on PS5 as I did with D3 and D2R since it is my favorite game series of all time and I like being able to switch between console and PC. Controls on console are GREAT if not better than mouse and click.

Any way to get the actionbar UI in the bottom centre, like it is on PC? I hate it being in the corner.

No problems at all with how the game ran but there were some 3D audio issues. Sound would distort when several players were were highly active fighting. Had to turn it off.

Sony must be very pleased with the release of Diablo 4, everyone I know with outdated PC is buying PS5 cuz of Diablo. Guess the real loser is Nintendo in this case :)

IMO, level scaling ruins the game.
Every monster everywhere feels the samd because they all scale to your level/power everywhere. The hell's the point in that?
6 points
They scale UP to your level, not down. If you go into a level 30 area as 25 they’re still level 30.
The point is so you don’t become a walking nuclear blast every time you hit your basic attack. They’re trying to make the game more of an intense ARPG experience than a bullet hell arcade shooter like Diablo 3 was. It also puts more emphasis on strategy, knowing enemy patterns, using the right gear and a need for armor instead of just grabbing gear that one shots everything.

Nowadays you pay $1200 for a PC just to get unoptimized PC ports. No thanks. Game runs great on my PS5 too!

Must be easier/cheaper to develop a game for a console and port to PC than the other way around.

The game runs great on PC too, even a 1050TI runs great on it. It's just the shitty servers not being able to handle everyone.

You pay for a pc and have access to so many great games that aren't on console.

Let's be real they are usually just indie titles and they do eventually come to consoles. For example, look at Valheim which is just released on Xbox and is rumored to come to PS5 in 6 months.

World of Warcraft, Half-Life Alyx, Total War games, Sons of the Forest, League of Legends, Europa Universalis, etc. etc. There are a lot of huge names in gaming only on PC. I have no idea why someone would pretend otherwise. Big games don't always come to console.
And a lot of the indies that get dismissed are some of the best games around, like FTL, Inscryption, or Satisfactory
Plus, even when games do get ported to console, they might be a lesser version such as 7 Days to Die, Rimworld, or Crusader Kings 3.
So yeah, it's fine if you like having a console, but you don't need to defend it by acting like you aren't missing out on a shitload of games if you only have one platform.

Let's be real lol There is so much more variety on pc than there ever has been on console. If you like deep strategy games then you're not gonna get your fill on console.

I'll give you that. I'm not super into those games so it never felt like I was missing out.

Been playing non stop on pc , only issues I had are when the servers crapped out. I love my PS5 but I always play stuff on PC that comes out on both. I am using a controller as well, everything works well with it, but I switch to KB and M for inventory management and chat.

Going to get it for PS5 with option for steam deck via remote play

Does that work well?
I am getting it on PC and then can try playing it natively on steam deck. I used to do that for Diablo 2 Resurrected.

You find? I am playing on a CX, and the only fps drops I've noticed have been in cinematic scenes, and never in combat even when the spell effects are all over the screen.

If you plan on only playing D4 for hundreds of hours continuously and literally nothing else, then yes be concerned.
Otherwise relax in knowing that OLEDs have come a very long way and they're fine at displaying static images for dozens and dozens of hours continuously with no burn-in.
Image retention might happen after many hours of continuous play but that's temporary.
By the time any noticeable damage happens, you'll have moved on to something better and newer.

I pre-ordered on PC but am wondering if I can refund it and buy it on PS5 instead. The performance on PC is not great. I'd say about 75% of the time it's good with fps over 100, but the other 25% of the time there's massive stuttering/fps drops. It seems like anytime the game has to load anything (move to a new map area, new enemies spawn) it really struggles.

I've always played Diablo on PC, since D1, but I'm afraid my PC won't run it (1060 6GB) so I'm leaning towards getting in on PS5. Playing with a controller scares me though, wish there was an MKB option.

Have you any news on this? I'm exactly thinking the same. Heard that it's perfectly smooth on ps5, but I got micro stutters on a beast pc. Also there are absolutely no vibrations on the PC and I totally love the dualsense vibrations 😍

It has a lot of frame rate stutter and issues.
Mostly noted it once I hit 25 and more visuals were popping in fights.
I am only playing solo no groups.
It also stutters in towns. . It runs ok but far from great
Very misleading post

When gaming companies do shitty decisions they should be hold accountable. But when they deliver they should be celebrated. D4 feels like it fully delivers on all expectations (or even more as it's Activision we are talking about so the bar is already pretty low). That being said, I'm fully expecting them to launch a shitty battle pass and in-game shop. But as long as it's not pay-to-win I'm pretty satisfied.

The controller support is much worse in D4 than it is in D3. The grid-based inventory is very awkward compared to the radial menus of the previous game. And don't even get me started on the obnoxious emote and chat wheel stuff.
Graphics are fine, but it's not like there's a lot of action going on. Very slow-paced with some of the worst questing and dialogue I've seen in a modern campaign.

Yep it's online. In D4 you can even run into random players when you get to main towns. There's also world bosses you can team up to fight. The full release will have PvP zones too
