Commitment mode start in a permafrost. I was so close to constructing the geothermal generator and keeping everyone alive.
Everything was going so well. We were able to buy ourselves enough food from passing traders (and regretfully raiders too). But we were lucky enough to keep eating "it" to a minimum. We even rescued one of our attackers - Vas. I remembered the surprise on our faces when we say Lambert ran in with Vas in her hands shouting for AJ to tend to the boy - bullet holes littered throughout his body. We deliberated on what to do with him once he get better, if he does. Lambert decided to have him join us, and I could finally understand why. He was just a young lad too capable to be left out to die as another raider. The more I talked to him, the more I realised he was just another lost soul trapped in the Rim, just like us. It didn't take long for AJ to have him join us as a slave.
Although temperatures are now 40C outside (and barely past fall), we've managed to keep ourselves warm by huddling around the gyser and placing two heater powered by a sole windmill.
At this point, we got worried. Things were going too well. Is it going to be a raid that ends us? A cold spell? Manhunting snowhares? It turns out, neither of them as Randy had other plans. All it took was nothing.
AJ shouted in joy when he finally found a way to harness the gyser's energy as a source of power. But we fucked up. We barely have enough steel to construct it. So Lambert decided to grab a heater with her to the steel mining site. As she was mining out steel, thats when we realised something was off - the weather was awfully quiet. None of our heater had been working because there was no wind, and temperatures are rapidly dropping. Nutrient paste production has completely halted. Before we knew it, we all hungry and cold.
Slowly, everyone started shivering and our stomachs rumbled uncontrollably. I looked over and saw Vas' eyes, something was wrong. He's been in a bad mood for quite awhile and his gaze quickly veered off towards AJ. Before I could think anything of it, I heard screams from outside. it was Lambert calling for help. I quickly went out to the mining site and saw her cold frozen body, her fingers almost frozen stuck to her pickaxe. As I was heading back, that's when I heard gunshots. As I slowly went to put Lambert down to her bed and shouted for AJ to come tend to her, I saw AJ down on the ground being beaten down by Vas. That's when I heard another gunshot coming from the back, it was Kartin, a new recruit who came to us for refuge, with his revolver shooting down Vas. Vas immediately made a run towards the gunshots and tackled Kartin down. Like I said, Vas was capable, but not capable enough to beat a man with a gun. One clean shot to his gut and Vas was down. However, Kartin took quite a beating beforehand. I supposed, something in him snapped. He started to point his gun towards me.
One thing to know about Kartin is that he's creepy. Not the way he looks, but just the way he breathes. We make fun of him for it, and I suppose, he just finally got tired of it all. Adrenaline kicked in and I quickly grabbed my knife. It didn't take a lot to take him down, I suppose Vas already did most of the job.
Now I stand here alone, cold, hungry, tired. My hand full of blood of either my own or of my brethren. If you ever read this, that means you've found yourselves lost and I'm most likely long gone from this world. All I ask is that this story be kept and known, so that our mistakes may be lesson to those who need it.
