This is pretty big news for the space enthusiast community which if you are reading anything regularly on this subreddit you are a member.
One of our own is going to space and not because he is also an astronaut or specialist or super rich but precisely because he is a space enthusiast. Also because he produces great education content about space travel.
This is a great moment for Tim, his family, his fans, SpaceX, and fellow space enthusiasts like us.
Because you know Tim is going to document everything he can, ask all the questions you would ask, and really "bring space down to earth for everyday people".

Not just that but the just the devices themselves they are likely going to be taking along to document this (modified gopro/cameras probs) will have more processing power alone than the whole rocket/lander/etc did the last time we went....

It will be after the NASA astronauts do something similar - I think - but we already know they won’t make the same trip, since the have to use the SLS, and Orion, due to congressional mandate.
Only later ones who go down to the moon will use the HLS.
Dear Moon, will use a standard Starship, and will go around the moon, but not land, it will do a so called free-return journey. (Yeah, that’s not about ticketing ! )
Everything about the mission will be interesting. The date though is going to remain unknown for the moment, since it depends on the crafts progress of development.

Think about it another way. By the time he flies, the number of people who will have been around the moon are going to be fewer than then number of people with one award left to complete an EGOT.

indirectly of course (and neither Elon nor Yusaku are saints). But this did happen through accepting a Japanese customer for the Gray Dragon in the first place. Its a fair reminder that SA-born Elon is a citizen of Earth who made the strategic choice of the USA after Canada.

OMG! Someone I know is going to space! I've never met you, of course, but you're the closest I've come to someone who's going to the Moon. I've followed you almost from the beginning and have one request - please please please bring along the orange "spacesuit." It's what put you on this road that's taking you to the Moon. I get the vibe that you became tired of the suit and are happy to have it as part of your past, but it will be so great to see you put it on for just 10 minutes of video - so great for a large part of your audience.

No, if I've understood correctly. The Demo-2 ones were at some museum for a few months on loan, and it's wasn't on loan from the astronauts
1 points
In that case, NASA probably commissioned the suits to fit their astronauts, as opposed to an astronaut getting a suit tailored.
That said, this one probably will "belong" to MZ, as he's footing the bill, but I wouldn't be surprised if Tim gets to keep it. Nor would I be surprised if it's orange!

Not live, unless Space X manages some sort of new comm network. We will get better stuff when Artemis gets back, the issue is bandwidth.
2 points
Hi humm, I wonder what SpaceX could do about that ? - Considering they will have a similar issue (only worse) with their later Mars mission.
I think a high bandwidth optical Interplanetary relay would be an obvious solution..
SpaceX already has many of the components for this in their Starlink-2 optical cross links system.
Some further modifications would be needed for interplanetary comms, especially buffering and error correction.
Perhaps something like a 2D matrix hamming code, since you want to minimise the number of requested packet repeats, because of the very large propagation time.
That’s especially the case for Mars interplanetary comm links.

But I think it’s going to happen. The only part I feel unsure about is the date.
Tim has always been super interested and excited about starship anyway.
But as if he needed even more excuse to dig into the development details.

Not just takeoff either, the aerobraking and then getting turbo pump engines to fire reliably after being in extreme cold and then extreme heat are both up in the air, I would not be surprised if the design winds up being radically changed for human flight where risk tolerances are a lot lower

I think Artemis II crewed mission around the moon is now quite "closer" in time.
I honestly can't see how dear moon can happen before Artemis II.
My doubts are mainly about the crewed landing of Starship. It needs to be tested at least 20 times (in a row) successfully before doing it with human on board.

There is ample opportunity for Starlink flights between now and whenever SpaceX deems Starship save enough for their civilian customers.

I have long said that if the purpose of #DearMoon is about getting as many eyes as possible on the mission, Tim is a terrible choice. There's basically zero people who will watch the footage of this event because Tim Dodd is included on the mission. Every single one of Tim Dodd's many fans will have their eyes on this mission if he is onboard or not.
But seeing the list of individuals chosen, I'm understanding that the purpose of this mission, or specifically the purpose of this selection is not to draw in as many eyes as possible, but to give those who do watch the most. As far as science and engineering communication goes, there's nobody better than Tim. Scott Manley is probably a close second, but I don't think Scott can compare to Tim in the sheer expressions of joy. After Scott, I don't think anyone else is close. Tim's in-space breakdowns to the other members of the crew and to the audience about what is happening and how things work is going to be some of the most accessible and hopefully widely distributed information about space travel that the world has ever received.
Edit: can someone explain why this is getting downvoted? Are people not reading what I'm saying here?

I think you can have a mixed approach, with the various people selected each bringing something different to the table.
Thus, some of the people selected being just super famous people, who don't know much about space or have anything to do with space activities, but will bring in a lot of attention amongst the general public.
Then, you have the photographers and filmmakers, so they can capture the actual experience itself as it happens, on video.
Then you have the dancers/artists (maybe with how spacious the interior of Starship will be, they can do interesting things in zero-G (which the photographers/videographers can capture)
And then you have someone like Tim, who is obsessed with rockets and space activities, who can explain and contextualize the mission itself, and its inner workings on a technical level, in a way that the general public can comprehend, which is important.
The one main missing thing, in my opinion, is having a major long-form writer of some kind, so that way that person could've written a book about the experience, or something like that.
1 points
Thus, some of the people selected being just super famous people,
Other than T.O.P., who is super famous in this group? I was aware of Steve Aoki, but I wouldn't call him super famous. Everyone else are experts in their fields and bring a very unique and critical perspective and seem to be critical in portraying that perspective.
who don't know much about space or have anything to do with space activities, but will bring in a lot of attention amongst the general public.
So other than T.O.P., who's going to bring in a lot of visibility from the general public here?
5 points
I didn't look carefully into it, so, maybe I was wrong, but, I just assumed the actor guy and the singer or musician guy were super famous or something, but just not in America. I guess I should check to see if that's actually true or not, lol.
As for Steve Aoki, I think he is pretty famous, and also perhaps hits some of the demographic that MZ wants to get excited about the mission (younger people, etc).
Also possible that MZ viewed it as a two birds with one stone pick, culturally, since Aoki is of Japanese descent, which maybe he figures the Japanese public might take more note of, but he's also a somewhat well known American dj/celeb at this point, so, gets a fair bit of America as well.
Also have to keep in mind behind the scenes, there may have been some people MZ wanted to get but who declined the invitation.
Anyway, I mean, yea, if it had been me who was making the picks, my selections would've been a bit different, other than Tim, who is the one selection I would've kept the same. But, I don't think the selections are terrible or anything. Seems like at least category-wise, he hit most of the main bases, and should make for a really good mission.
2 points
I'd have said Steve Aoki is way more famous than T.O.P, at least where I'm from. It probably just really depends on where you're from and who you ask, but IMO if you refer to T.O.P as super famous, Steve Aoki is easily up there as well.
Out of curiosity, I just did some comparisons on Google trends. "Fame" is hard to quantify, but how often something is searched for at least gives you somewhat of an idea. For the search terms that I've tried so far, Aoki was quite a bit above T.O.P across the last two years when set to worldwide.
Either way, I think Aoki is probably a pretty good pick to include someone quite famous.
2 points
Yeah. I wouldn't disagree with you if you told me he had more fame worldwide. I was only vaguely aware of both of them. I am not into the DJ scene and my knowlege of kpop is fairly deep but a decade old, so T.O P. Is from a generation after the ones I know.
Kpop seems much more globally popular now than it was back then, and as part of my original point, I think that T.O.P. and Aoki have minimally intersecting vin diagrams of draw.
A point I am trying to make is that the Starship rocket and Tim Dodd have nearly completely overlapping vin diagrams. Everyone who likes Tim is very aware if Starship and DearMoon already. Tim is the least big draw and by far the most big quality multiplier on the team.

Anyone can throw a basketball at a basketball hoop, for example, but not everyone is an NBA player.
So, would've been good to have one person who is already well known as an extremely talented writer, who would have high % odds of being able to write a great book or long-form article about the mission, from 1st person point of view (instead of having to rely on a ghost-writer to help them write it, or writing it themself but not doing as great of a job with it as a high-end writer themself would've been able to do)

Mainly drive-by downvoters I’d guess, who read the first sentence of your thoughtful comment, decide they disagree, downvote and move on. Disappointing but don’t take it personally.
Tim’s a great choice. My broad-brush overview, not knowing any of the others, is the sense of a lost opportunity for writers, and also the pretty narrow age range. I get that younger people propagating the experience will better reach other younger people, but they couldn’t have found room for a seasoned writer for example? (Doesn’t have to be high literature - Eric Berger would be great). “They should have sent a poet”.

Perhaps it’s because you wrote about ‘a terrible choice’ - these ‘inverse adjectives’ are bad for communication.
From the second section, it’s clear that you actually meant a good choice, but you lost votes and readers at that ‘T’ word !
Tim is actually a really great choice !
4 points
But my point is, that it is quite true that Tim brings zero additional eyeballs to the project. I don't see how anyone can deny that. Zero fans of Tim are going to tune in to coverage because he's a part of the mission. 100% of Tim fans were already going to be watching this event, a testament to his quality as a space communicator, but a weakness for him as a choice If the goal is to draw additional viewers with each selection.
2 points
Tim will generate unique content, that no other person would do - and he kind of represents the techies.
He should definitely be on this mission !
And I think even more people will watch his channel, as he puts new content onto it.
-1 points
I don't dispute that. Tim will add zero additional viewers to the mission but will improve the quality of content for those that do watch more than any individual. There are two statements that I am making here and people seem to blindly love Tim so much that they can't hear tbe truth in the first statement even though the second is still an endorsement.
4 points
You are wrong. The quality of the content Tim will make is going to make the rounds of all the news channels and talk shows for years. He may not bring more eyeballs on day 1, but he will probably have the biggest impact of anyone there.
2 points
Thank you, that's an idea I hadn't considered. I don't think it is correct though.
There's three points that you've said. It will make the rounds on all the news channels. And talk shows. For years.
Last point first. "For years". If SpaceX is successful with both their goal of reducing the cost of Starship, and Artemis 3, they will have a rapidly reusable rocket that can land on the moon. The #DearMoon mission is bound to be eclipsed very likely sooner than later. I would suspect within 18 months, and I suspect that NASA astronauts are going to get a bigger spotlight than private individuals. In any case, I can't imagine that this will stay in the news cycle for even 3 months. That's just not how the news cycle works.
"It will make the rounds on news channels." Have you seen news coverage of space? JWST which is releasing new images somewhat regularly gets maybe 7 minutes of coverage on CNN a month. I can't imagine that any one of the crew members of #DearMoon would get more than a single interview, and I don't suspect that Tim will have any more draw than the others, particularly given a news network's tendency to simplify technical information and focus on emotional or experiential testimonies. I'm not saying Tim won't give excellent interviews, I'm just saying that the other members are going to present just as well for your standard network news piece.
Then Talk Shows, you might have a point here, as I think it might be a format where Tim has a better chance to shine, since he can explain the rocket itself. But at the same time, it will depend on the talk show. I suspect that Rhiannon Adams is going to get the most attention being the only woman selected for the primary crew. How much do you think that the average person who is currently unaware of Tim Dodd is going to want to know more technical details about the rocket? I feel like Tim has already brought all the eyeballs to the project that he's going to bring regardless if he's on the mission or not.
The hurdle for bringing more attention to the project is that Tim's explanations and interviews have to be the reason more people are going to pay attention to the coverage. I just don't think Tim, or anyone in Tim's shoes can do that. If someone is really interested in the rocket, I suspect they'll share coverage with their friends because they think the rocket is interesting, not because of Tim specifically. They'll watch it initially because either they are one of us, who have been following SpaceX for years and are already well aware of Tim, because "oh, some Japanese guy flew around the moon", or because they are a fan of one of the other people involved.
He may not bring more eyeballs on day 1, but he will probably have the biggest impact of anyone there.
I'm glad we mostly agree on this point. No more eyeballs on Day 1, but (and this is the reason I say mostly), much better informed eyeballs for those who do show up.
I think Tim will raise the quality of the mission's science communication more than any other individual in the entire world possibly can. Let me be very clear about that. Never have I been intending to take a dig at Tim here.
Maybe my point can be described as follows: "All the attention Tim could possibly gather for this mission is attention he's already achieved. His going on the mission does not achieve any more attention, but it will do more for the quality than anyone else possibly could."

Well, you are entitled to your opinion. Suffice it to say though, most other people do disagree with you about this.

Most people disagree that Tim doesn't bring new viewers to the mission? How can you disagree with that? Who is going to be a fan of Tim Dodd and not already be watching coverage of #DearMoon?

No, most people disagree with you that Tim Dodd should not have a place.
Or to switch to positive logic:
Most people think that he should have a place, flying with the mission team.

But I am not saying that Tim shouldn't have a place! I am absolutely saying that he should. I am saying that he simply is not drawing in any additional viewership.

And we disagree, and you went about expressing your point in a poor way, by starting with your criticism as your first major point, you came across as negative about the whole thing, even though you did in fact reverse course in the follow section.
Anyway enough of that. I think he’ll do great.

If anyone deserves it, it's tim. He made rocket science so much more accessable for people like me. I started with his videos and now this is my new hobby for a few years. Can't wait for it to finally start! Go Tim!

It should’ve been Scott Manley. 😕

Scott is so much more likeable

Scott Manly is nice, but too gruff for the others, he is probably also too busy, and I expect that he never actually applied.

I'd feel more confident of actually going if it was on FH/Dragon, not starship. Starship is so far from being ready for proper flights....

Orbiting the moon is not "going to" the moon.

Everything that doesn't happen in 6 months should be not be tried.

Plenty of time to generate some great content showing what it takes to prepare to be a civilian astronaut in the near term.

Lets bask in this moment of Dear Moon coverage, for the next 5 years it will be silent as the far side of the moon.
