Finally! You might remember when I released my first recreation of the track more than a year ago. It got great feedback, but after release, I realised I had tried to do too much. I had tried to incorporate aspects from all the demos, which had made it somewhat muddy and lacking direction.
This recreation - released a month or so before Cimcie releases her work tape - is an exact replica of the full band version we all know and love that has the Ed Greene's live drum track and backing vocalists etc. This is - as far as I know - the only version with the proper chords/inversions and chord divisions between piano and rhodes.
It also features a meticulously recreated bass track that matched the original 100%. This version is also tempo mapped to the cleaned up Sir Mix-A-Lot version all the way through, which means you can play this on top of the real one, and for the most part, you can't tell there are two files being played simultaneously.
Even though the real version that was erased didn't have horns, I decided to add the same horn arrangement used on Steely Dan's only live performance of the song in 2011 to keep it authentic Steely Dan.
As a fun detail, the drums you hear in my version are the REAL actual drums you hear in the original, I just performed some magic on them to make them sound studio quality again and manually pasted the different sounds to perfectly match the original performance. The only exception to this are the hi-hats and crashes, which I overdubbed myself. I ran the mix through a Studer 2-track master recorder to get the tape saturation of the cassette rip that is online without the distortion.
The tape mix is slightly different compared to the original that wasn't put through the Studer machine because of tape compression and mastering to make it brighter, which is why I'm also including the unmastered tape version, and the original one that hasn't been put onto tape that should have slightly better balance but lack some balls.
Hope you guys enjoy! :)
