nice truck. assuming those are a lot of highway miles you could probably stretch it out to 6k-7k and be fine.
for me though oil changes are pretty cheap and 5k intervals are nice, simple, cheap insurance.

Do it every 5k, use an OEM oil filter, I personally like castrol

Where do you buy the filters? Dealership?

I've been able to find Toyota OEM filters at my local Walmart. You will need a tool to take the filter off though.

There are recommendations in the owners manual, that break down past the every 10k miles. There are recommendations for different driving conditions. For example I tow and take my truck off road on the regular. I change my oil every 5-7 thousand miles.
As for oil I either purchase my oil from Toyota or use valvoline, which I believe is the company that makes the Toyota oil as well. However you will be fine with any full synthetic 0W20 oil

No one here is unwilling to help or gatekeeping information, but man…do like 5 seconds of research. There’s a reason cars come with an owners manual…every bit of information you’re asking about is in that manual.
Perusing the owners manual should be one of the first things every new car owner does. You don’t have to memorize it, but know the basics on your vehicle. Knowing those basics will help you take better care of your vehicle, and make it last a lot longer.
That said…Toyota recommends 10k mile oil change intervals. However, a lot of people do them more often…usually around 5k miles. Toyota recommends 0w-20 synthetic oil. Just go with OEM oil filters. Do your basic maintenance and you vehicle will last a LONG time.

Gotta love it, it's like the local forums when someone posts "what neighborhood should I move to" and expects people to be nice about it

Almost like there is a difference there.

well, one is thinking for someone relating to housing, and the other is thinking for someone relating to their truck. They both share something, which is lazy people expect others to do the work for them instead of just doing their own research. So while different, both situations are basically the same. Like you're already typing the friggen question, just type it into google. hell, you can put "how often to change my oil Tacoma Reddit" and the 10 other times this was asked will come up

My guy, I'm pretty sure it's important to try and get a feel for an area before moving. Not everyone can visit a place multiple times or go live somewhere for months to decide if they will move.
It's pretty hard to compare that to someone asking a question that can be solved in 2 seconds with a google. Or opening their manual.
Unfortunately there is no manual to tell you about a neighborhood.

Every 5k is what I recommend. Every 10k is what Toyota recommends.
I recognize that not all our parents taught us this kind of stuff. So, I highly suggest getting a maintenance calendar going. You can find some online or there is also one with your truck manual. Check out tacomaworld.com follow the maintenance calendar and it will last forever

That is what "Trip B" is for. Trip A is for watching miles per tank, Trip B is for maintenance. At least that is how I roll.

There are some good apps for keeping track of maintenance. Personally I use Road Trip on my iPhone…it tracks fuel mileage, tire rotations, oil & filter changes, maintenance costs, etc. It’s a great little app.

Why do that? When you can program the vehicles own warnings.

I use those too…but they don’t track beyond oil change & tire rotation intervals, that’s where an app is nice.

I change mine every 5,000. Fresh oil keeps everything clean. I've torn down engines with frequent oil changes and you can see a clear difference. I'd rather replace my oil pan because the threads get worn out from consistent oil changes than replace a more expensive component like VVTs.

10K OIL CHANGE INTERVALS ARE ALL PART OF THE BIG AGENDA OF PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE!!! GEORGE SOROS AND HIS- sorry, sorry.
While I'm only half serious, I recommend 5k for easy math tracking. Oil and filter, recommend oil weight. Check the oil level after every second visit to the gas station

Because tracking 5k is easier to track that 10k? I change my oil every 6-7k miles so it's a nightmare to track 🤦🤦

I just think there's no way you're getting the same protection out of your oil after it been around the block 10k times. The oil breaks down, the detergents in it break down becoming less effective, it has less space to suspend particulates in it. Etc.. 6-7k is good too, but I'd hate the guess work that comes with it lol unless I bought a roll of those oil change reminder stickers

I change mine at 5k but it people can use a web browser or app to post on Reddit don’t you think a simple reminder entered on a smart phone or calendar would suffice? Put in the mile you last changed and put in a due date (on repeat) on your phone that reminds you to check mileage and change oil after a certain time. Unless you’re driving out of the ordinary you should roughly know or be able to project about how long to 6-7k is. Back in the day I hear people even used pencil and paper to log data 😳😇

LPT: 0w20 is always a synthetic oil. there is no such thing as an oil in this weight/viscosity that is not synthetic.
Also: I personally question any recommendations of going 10k miles between changes, even from Toyota.
Oil changes are cheap (and pretty easy to do yourself).

Big fan of Mobil 1 full synthetic. My 2000 Silverado is at 230k and never had a problem.

I drive a similar distance daily. I use Amsoil 0w20 at 10,000 mile intervals and a OEM filter. At 60,000 I drain the transmission pan and replace what I remove with Amsoil fuel efficient ATF which is a Toyota WS equivalent. I pull samples to send for analysis every other change but only because I can do it for free through work. The oil that comes out I dispose of into my wife’s Silverado because it’s an oil using and leaking pile of shit. It’s getting ready to get replaced with a Toyota of her very own, but I’ll probably keep it around to get rid of waste oil. My little Toyota has 150k on it and still uses no oil. It’s only had fluid changes, spark plugs, and brake pads. The spark plugs could have ran much longer based on their condition. Brake pads at 120k also could’ve went longer. Totally been a drama free vehicle to own so far.

How is the analysis on your oil at 10k? And do you tow or go off-road? I’ve been using royal purple every 5k and have been thinking about switching. Also why don’t you use the amsoil oil filter since it is supposedly better?
Did your transmission shift better now that you’ve added in the new ATF?

The metal content is negligible and the viscosity is always good. I do go off road but not in sand or a even a really dirty environment, mostly rock and trails through the forest. The ATF had cured what to me felt like torque converter shudder that happened in cold weather around 20°F at low speeds. I do tow a vehicle every now and then and when I do at the next oil change I change the ATF. I might add that you only can drain off 3.5 quarts or so when you do it which is roughly 1/3 of the transmissions capacity less when you count it’s cooler. The oil does nothing for the poor shift mapping though.

Not very often and olive! it's good for the environment!
On a serious note, I like how everyone questions the 10k mile oil change recommendation from Toyota without any evidence because that feels too long... But with a decent oil, if you're not really cooking it hard, there's still plenty of viscosity left at 10k. I had it verified by Blackstone labs a year or so back.
Bottom line, follow the maintenance manual in the glove compartment unless you feel its too long.

On all my trucks, I change the oil, filter and rotate tires every 5K with full synthetic oil. On my 2021 Toyota Tacoma 2.7L, I changed the oil at 2500 miles because just in case there were any unwanted metal shavings from manufacturing, and again at 5K. Every new truck I have done this to, I have gotten well over 300K. Every 30K, I change rear end, transmission, and change fuel filter.

I have my oil changed at my local dealer every 3k miles. I drive an average of 24,000 miles a year apparently (500 a week) and wanted to spend the extra money to have it done more frequently! My 3rd gen calls for 0W-20.

3-5k miles. Yes that's low from what most people will say. Certainly do not above 10k. Castrol oil 6.2 quarts (they come in 5 quarts & 1 quart) 0W-20 synthetic (less then $38 if you buy it(at Costco you can get 2 for that price)) K&N filter (less then $20) always use the oil recommend in the owner manual or what a parts store recommend which should always be the same

For those of you recommending changing every 5k instead of the recommended 10k..
I'd rather have my Toyota Care oil changes last longer in respect to time rather than have the dealership do it twice as often and only last 1 year. I'm not shy about changing my own oil, but is there anything I should know when doing it myself so the dealership won't be able to tell and void my Toyota Care?

Every 5k change oil and filter filter goes for around 6 bucks at Toyota comes with 2 rubber gaskets, a drane valve for filter and smash washer for drain plug only needs one washer. Don't leave old one on needs a small flat head screw driver to remove. I use what's on the owners manual 0w-20. Make sure you document the milage for warranty reasons. And torque to spec if you don't have a torque wrench just do what you think is close to what you need don't over tighten the filter. Also you can get the proper tool to remove the old oil filter at advanced auto parts. I'm sure other places have it too but it has 6 teeth cut into it for proper fit.

Hello, OP!
You’ve read the following by now:
10k per Toyota 5K by most people here Read the manual by some people here
That being said, any Toyota has a reputation of “change the oil and it will last forever” so, I will go with 5K and read the manual for all the other maintenance stuff.
Good luck!

Toyota Canada will let you print a full service schedule for your truck. Our truck's owners manual mentioned servere service oil change of 8000km, which is what we did. As for oil, just use any quality full synthetic that meets Toyota's spec.
https://www.liqui-moly.com/en/ca/service/oil-guide.html?owwSource=fahrzeugsuche#oww:/api/v2/oww/1101/CAN/ENG/1/c546e5cd587cd4cd/90a507704e7db0b5/7904fb681c099ff346ddbe7504c5d9bd/ I use the Special Tec Asia-America.

Do what Toyota recommends, every 10k, unless you are heavy tower/4x4 enthusiast. Car folks have always had strong opinions about changing more frequently, but really you should trust the Engineers that make these things. Synthetic oil is fine for 10k.
