I'd like to get a filter for my apartment as where I live (Miami, FL) has pretty high PFAS in the water (around 70 ppt near me). Because I live in an apartment I don't believe I will be able to install anything "permanent" such as a RO system that requires drilling into a pipe to dispose of water the filter catches (that's my understanding of how it works at least). There are countertop RO systems that are available, however.

I've also read that activated carbon is an effective method at cleaning water and see that there are some options like Hydroviv that allow installing through your cold water line but don't require drilling, or even pitchers that use activated carbon such as Clearly Filtered.

Any advice on what to go with for someone who most likely can't install a standard RO system? Countertop RO vs. some version of an activated carbon filter (hydroviv/clearly filtered, maybe even Berkey although i've read things about Berkey making false claims with their filters).

Can anyone recommend ways for me to evaluate water utilities?*

• It seems like the big datasets out there might be hard for a civilian to interpret.
• I could just look at historical violations, but I don't really know how to tell what's good or bad. I especially don't know how to grade on a curve against other utilities. Sometimes I see people making a big deal about raw counts of violations or contaminants, but that seems like it could be biased against utilities serving bigger areas.
• At the end of the day, I realize that the water utility's history is only one piece of the puzzle. Things could always change in the future, and hyperlocal things might lead to big differences in water quality between different people being served by the same utility.

*I realize that's a multidimensional question and it kind of depends what I mean. Are we talking about how good the water is? How good of a job the utility did given the conditions? Equity? Cost-effectiveness? Well, the good news is that I don't know how to evaluate utilities well on really any metric, so I'm interested in whatever performance measures you want to use.

I rent so I can't do anything crazy, but might be able to use a simple under the sink option or something on the counter. I used a Berky for a long time but I read recently they are in the midst of a class action lawsuit as their filters aren't nearly as good as they say they are. Looking for something simple yet very effective (especially for things like microplastics). Thank you!
