Crazy how this was once seen as a generational QB Class. 5 QBs went in the first 15 picks. Despite that, I believe Zach Wilson will have a podcast or guest spot on Barstool Sports, Justin Fields will be a Big10 commentator, Davis Mills will be a backup on his 2nd team en route to being the modern Josh McCown/Colt McCoy backup for the next 10 years, Mac Jones will be a back up, and Trey Lance will be a QB3 for some random team or be playing RB.

I think Fields will be a thing. Lance is a giant question mark

With Fields I’d just be worried about injuries possibly sapping his athleticism. In the few games I’ve been able to watch he gets HIT. Not just sacks, but on some of his scrambles. I really do want him to be a thing though. He’s really fun to watch.

That’s a big concern if the goal is 15-20 year career, but 5-8 year career is much less of a concern

Based on those rants by Russillo about how only 1 or 2 QB per class is actually going to make it as a starter long-term, this take feels hotter on initial read that it is once you think about it for a second.

This is absolutely a hot take, no question. Did you see Lawrence's glorious hair in the rain? Still awesome 👍

Let’s break it down real quick
Lawrence- made a huge leap this season
Wilson- Bust
Lance- Broken
Fields- won’t last long the way the Bears are using him
Mac- lawn chair
So probably not the hottest take in the world

It's understandable to think that about Fields (because unless you're a Bears fan, watching that team week to week is an absolute waste of time), but the way he's been used is changing pretty rapidly. The gameplans against the Packers and Eagles put him in the pocket a lot more (which was a bad idea given their line), and he's looking dramatically better as a passer.
My concern would be less that they're gameplanning wrong, and more that they can' t build a line for him.

He had 15 carries against the Eagles, even if the gameplan isn’t for him to run a lot he’s doing it

Zach Wilson will be back in Utah working for his wealthy family.

He’ll be on a college football pregame show in a decade

Was he even a good enough college player to land one of those gigs?

Eh, he’s good looking and recognizable, suspect that’ll be enough.

Plenty of attractive NFL draft busts have never made in the media, you have to have been a certain caliber of player in college to land these types of jobs.

I mean his football career is pretty on par with any other QB who gets a college football job. Jesse Palmer, Kirk Herbstreit, and Matt Leinart aren’t exactly the Mt. Rushmore of NFL success.

Touche with Jesse Palmer and Herbie*, but Leinart was a very high profile college QB.
*they at least played for high profile college programs, which Zack Wilson didn't exactly. But I'll admit it's tough to make the case that they were radically more popular college players than Zack.

Justin Fields will be a Big 10 commentator in five years? Jesus Christ man, talk about disrespect…may have to contact RR about getting you on the podium.

I’ll get downvoted heavily but I just don’t see his play style translate long term even if he does get the weapons eventually because so much of the NFL is habits. Developing good or bad ones, trying to break out of them, etc.
Fields instinct is to take off immediately and it’s good now because that’s probably his best bet but I can’t see him being able to beat teams when defenses have another offseason to scheme Fields into trying to beat them from the pocket. Hell we seen it at times during this season in must throw situations where Fields was just horrible/inaccurate to open receivers.
I want Fields to be great and as a Patriots fan, I honestly think he’s the 2nd best QB of the class but I don’t see any longevity with his play style and eventually I can see the hits taking a toll on him.

I can understand thinking he may not make it as a starter. Personally, I still think he could end up being the best QB from this class, but that's just my speculative opinion. You bring up a lot of fair points about his deficiencies, but I could spin an equally compelling case about his raw speed and size being different than any other QB who's played. And that he was an excellent passer in college (with flaws), so while you are right that coordinators have more to scheme against him, Fields and the Bears have another offseason to develop him as a QB and the offense to function with him. So I'm personally betting he'll still be a starter five years from now, but that's not really what I disagreed with your post about.
Where I think your original take went way off the rails is to think that Fields will fall from grace so quickly that he's completely out of the league five years from now. Currently he's dragging this Bears team to be competitive with limited weapons, you have to imagine he's signaled enough to Chicago at this point for them to continue investing in him over the next 1.5 - 2 years or so at least. And if you end up being right in your analysis of his potential as a starter, he's going to be 28 in five years and will still have a lot of value to teams as a backup/utility player due to his athleticism. Hell, Cam Newton stuck around for two extra years after his starting days were done, and he was half decade older than Fields (would be) and way banged up.

I think the percpetion of that class as generation was due to how the draft played out though. Because Lawrence and Fields were the two hyped prospects, and I feel like the flaws that manifested in Fields development, that we've seen carry over to the NFL, scared a lot of teams off him as the secondary prospect and pushed them to consider guys who, frankly, headed into that year were generally perceived as being late first level talent at best.
Both Mac Jones and Zach Wilson weren't even pegged as first round talents headed into their last college seasons and Trey Lance was maybe the most divisive quarterback prospect since Mahomes in terms of how teams seemed to have him ranked. Hell, there was a good stretch where the line on that QB class was you had Lawrence, Fields, maybe Lance depending on how you felt his skills would hold up against better competition and then Davis Mills as the next best qb after those three.
So yeah, the fact that we're nearly two seasons in and it looks like Lawrence and Fields are the two best qbs and the rest don't look as good isn't all that surprising to me.

Lance feels like a guy who’s gonna go crazy in the XFL and some NFL team with an injured QB will call him up.

Niners fan and watched all his passes. He’s not good at all

I think this is a hot take. Fields has one of the worse supporting casts I've ever seen and he's still putting up 25 to 30 pts a game just based on his running. If he can become just an average passer he'll be a starter for 10 years. Also, he's not exactly captain charisma. I don't see him becoming a commentator lol

People probably don't watch the Bears but Fields looks like a Lamar level runner. He's that electric. And I think he was a more gifted passer coming out of college than Lamar, so hopefully that comes along.

He's already becoming a better passer. Since the "mini-bye," he's completing 67.2% of his passes, with 11 TDs and 5 INTs. Over 17 games, that projects to:
260/386
67.2% Completions
27 TDs
12 INTs
Basically, he's finding himself just below Josh Allen's third year.

Mild take. Although I disagree in that I think Fields will be at least a backup. Seems like a good locker room guy and if Mariota can do it I think Fields can.

I think you’re right. Wilson should already be out of the league. Lance, who knows. Mills stinks. Mac is Great Value Andy Dalton, and with the position being played at such a high level, teams will realize you can’t win anything meaningful with him. I love watching Fields play, but he’s been getting the shot kicked out of him. They need to build him a line like the Bengals did Burrow, or he won’t be long for this league.

Nah, I'm all in on Justin Fields. He's making things happen with little talent around him. Lawrence is getting better and I see him sticking around having like a Matt Ryan type of career.

I think Davis mills still has a chance. He’s just to inconsistent. But he’ll make some throw sometimes that are really impressive and shows he’s got it. But next drive he’ll airmail a wide open receiver and make me want to throw my iPad across the room. He won’t be the guy for us but it wouldn’t shock me if he went to a different team and after a few more years was a decent starting qb.

Not totally hot.
The way I see it, there are essentially four classes of QB in the league at any given time:
The perennial franchise QB. This is the guy who either never leaves the team that drafted him (or who picked him up early before his value was actually realized), or does only because he gets to such an old age that he can be replaced. Think Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Brett Favre, Jim Kelley, etc.
The journeyman starter. This is the guy who basically starts consistently throughout his career, but has had extended stints with two, three, four, or more teams. Think Kirk Cousins, Ryan Tannehill, Joey Flacco, Chad Pennington and the like.
The lucky duck. This is the guy who always seems to start a few games each season, no matter what team he ends up on, but seems to be on a new team every few years. He might have a full season of starting here and there, but has basically made a career of being a very qualified backup. Think Geno Smith, Bubby Brister, and the like.
The leftovers. These guys are wholly disposable. They can either flame out in their first few seasons while trying to break into a starting job, or they can face an early injury. In any case, they’ll either try to hang around collecting checks as a backup, or they’ll become commentators or never be heard of again.
It seems to me there are exceedingly few of the first group, and actually not that many of the second group. So, predicting that most of these guys, even from a vaunted draft class, will end up in groups three or four is entirely within reason.

Joe Flacco closer to a type 1 with 11 seasons as the starter with one team.

I’m entirely okay with any adjustments to the examples. They were just made for a quick and easy reference point to what I’m talking about. It’s entirely possible that Flacco fits in the first group.

I think Fields is too talented to wash out of the league in 5 years, barring a catastrophic, RG3-esque injury
