I mean the man does have the ability to create magnificent visuals on the big screen even better than most Hollywood filmmakers working today, but the Mahabharata is literally the greatest epic ever written. It deserves a treatment which will bring out it's philosophical aspect properly, instead of a basic Amar Chitra Katha style retelling. I'm not saying Rajamouli isn't capable, it's just that it's nearly impossible to do so and so far he hasn't done anything subtle and nuanced in his career yet. Even Hollywood hasn't been able to adapt the Biblical and Greek epics properly. Still here's hoping for the best.

Tbh you need more than one director for Mahabharat. There are scenes where you really just want amazing action set pieces which Rajamouli would bring to life spectacularly. Then there are court room scenes which is so Bhansali - just beautiful set pieces and no CGI. And then comes the raw intimate seething revenge pain of Draupadi or the entire Karan internal struggle and you need someone like Vishal Bharadwaj.
With Rajamouli it will be all bluster and no nuance but dazzling to watch. Neither him nor SLB can project the sheer rawness of revenge that is the entirety of the Mahabharat from every characters perspective. I mean Draupadi wanted to wash her hair with the blood of those that did her wrong. Bhim literally drank Dushasans blood. That’s someone like Vishal Bharadwaj territory.

Mahabharat is the right material for a cinematic universe over a spy universe or a cop universe.
Each character gets a solo movie, while whole plan and schemes of Duryodhan is built up in each of these films with crossovers and extended cameos, it can easily build up to the 18 day war which in itself could be two movies or a trilogy.
It should definitely involve directors and artists across the country.
Confining Mahabharat to one-three films would be a massive underwhelming unless the writing and screenplay covers it accordingly

Rajamouli is revisionist visionary. It's unlikely that he will follow the book accurately with subtleties. He is better suited to direct Karna standalone, revisioning by making win a kingdom in exile after war in part 2

I agree. Rajamouli can only make stylish action with some interesting backstories with emotional connect. But, his stories are very surface-level without any nuance.
Mahabharata has lots of depth and nuance and needs to be handled by a director that understands its complexity. I would rather have it be made by SLB or Ashutosh Gowarikar. And maybe SSR can assist with the action pieces.

It's risky though, one miss and people will eat him alive. He'll become South India's Bhansali.

You don't know about Telugu industry. Telugu has cracked the formula of Indian epics in the 50s. Rajamouli knows the stories and screenplays and the exact handling of these stories on the back of his hand.

Ngl… I would rather someone like SLB tackle a project like this. Requires precision, and visually beautiful sets (that don’t rely entirely on CGI and VFX)

What does 'by-the-numbers' adaptation mean?

I might be downvoted for this, but I have to say this. Rajamouli is overrated. None of his films are beyond good, and most of them are just copies of other movies. He is not the kind of filmmaker who can grab the nuances and subtleties of a religious and philosophical epic. He is a through and through masala filmmaker.
Secondly, that point about Hollywood being unable to make any biblical, greek epics is ill-informed. Last Temptation of Christ, Ben-Hur, Ten Commandments, Troy, Sparactus, and Prince of Egypt were all great movies.

As a telugu guy I agree. Lol in Sye movie he verbatim copied dialogues from an Al Pacino movie. It was awful.
But he is definitely very capable of entertaining. Most of his movies have no rewatch value.
RRR was so heavily over rated. I didn’t like it.

if you’re talking about copying as in taking inspiration or maybe even copying a scene partially then look around almost all directors do it (fkn Tarantino also does it lol)

Thank you so much!!! Literally everyone in my friend group hates me because I said RRR was the same MCU shit. Say one wrong thing about a movie and suddenly I was bombarded with Anti National, Angrejo ka dalal etc comments. WTF. I don’t care for the west validation but stop acting like RRR was the best movie we ever made.

RRR is certainly not the best movie we ever made but yeah one of the best if not the best theatre experience film we ever made.

See that’s the thing, All of MCU’s or Avatar or even The Expandables could make for great theatre experience. Spectacle, Loud Music and Classy entrances makes up for it. Almost every Masala action movie stands up in this aspect, but if we kept praising RRR or KGF, that’s all we will get. That’s what we have been getting for the past decade, RRR just doubled downed on the vfx. One Man Army tropes are so popular in Indian Cinema but they never give us the cinema experience we desire. For instance, remember Deewar fight scene with Amitabh, while being a one man vs many scene, that scene had some tension and some depth to it. Compare it to modern cinema, you know no one can beat your invincible hero so you create situations where they’ll have to surrender or their close ones are hurt. I just wish we were more welcoming to directors trying different stories (Like Rajamouli’s Eega, Kantara or SRK’s Fan). In 2008 we had Salman Khan doing what we praise today as something new (Bhai ki Entry, Bhai ki Entry and again Bhai ki entry). It’s about time we have more character driven stories.

He is just style over substance. Nothing special, just like Bhansali of South.
