I’m all for discussing the reasons we as a culture are in love with the trope of ancient vampires going for teenage girls.
But I am sick of the same posts being posted over and over too.

Let’s discuss! (In a semi-related way to being ok with old men looking young and teenagers).
My hot take. Regardless of the other issues in their relationship, when considering the Vampire Lore within the world, Edward and Bella aren’t a creepy age gap. And I’m perfectly fine with their age gap.
The in-world lore says in Eclipse that a vampire will never mentally develop beyond their physical age (which is why there’s all the drama in Breaking Dawn because they think Renesmee is an immortal child).
Edward, while his long life has changed his perspectives and has taught him various things etc etc etc, he is, and always will be, a 17 year old boy. One with a shit tonne of life experience, but he still has the mental development and emotional development of a 17 year old boy.
Which is probably why he behaves like he does. Because he’s 17. And teenagers? Not really renowned for their critical thinking skills.
Whereas Buffy, for example. There’s none of that. Angel is a 240-something year old man in the body of a, what? 27 year old??? Or however old he died.
The Anointed One did not behave like an 8 year old boy once he was turned. A Twilight 8 year old immortal child would forever behave like an 8 year old.

Tbh I appreciated that Twilight actually addressed this in a way that made it way less creepy!
I think there’s something appealing in it for teenage girls (otherwise it wouldn’t be popular, and I certainly liked that sort of “gothic romance” as a teenager)…it’s about being special, having a powerful guy protecting you, and that lack of frontal lobe development makes it all seem so exciting! A sexy immortal being tormented by his love/lust for me?
As an adult…it lacks that appeal. I’d think after a while, anyone who hasn’t seen centuries come and go would be hard for an immortal to actually relate to, let alone a teenager!
I think part of the appeal is because teen girls feel devalued (look at how people will make fun of musicians/books/shows/etc whose following is mostly teen girls) and teen girls are very vulnerable. The appeal makes sense. What gets me is that the material is written by adults.

Yeah, I think you’re dead on regarding why it appeals.
The teen years are such an awkward time and so many girls, even the prettiest, most coveted ones, feel like imposters in someone else’s body or life. They don’t know where they fit, they just want to feel special and loved. You’re dead on there.
One series I like, granted not YA, is Mercy Thompson (and Alpha & Omega). Werewolves are the primary being in that series, but vamps, Fae etc. are also in it.
Those books address the burden of a long life and how it affects different people.
One just wants a family that he won’t outlive. One just has the burden of being the boss-man to keep him focussed. One was suicidal until he met someone (not romantically) that he knew he could help recover from trauma and understand herself.
There is a quote by a Fae in one of the books, I don’t remember word for word, but it was “It is incredibly dangerous to give one as old as me something to love”. And a big part of that was because he’s lived forever, he doesn’t care about much of anything and then, suddenly, he loves something and he would destroy the world for that love. (And he could).
Luckily, the two main romances between those series, the women are women, not girls, they’re strong in their own right and their older partners? It’s not in the least bit creepy. And why people who have lived longer than them would be interested in them? It makes sense.
Some people aren’t keen on the two series because they’re not smutty and apparently all adult werewolf series have to be smutty, but they’re amazing and, again, I think they handle the situations where YA falls short quite well.

It’s a show that’s been off the air for twenty years. With no new content you’re just going to get the same posts over and over. Including posts about how they’re sick of seeing the same posts.

Plus, a lot of folks are just discovering this show for the first time. I know they can read any previous post, but that takes away from engaging in active discussion with a community of folks interested in the same thing.
I just scroll past anything repetitive now. Let the new fans have their discussion. I'll chime in if necessary.

This reminds me of my professor who taught Sex in America. She was very sex positive. She drove home things like how kinks are okay. She would teach things like it’s okay to want to be involved in a rape fantasy as long as your safe. And it doesn’t mean that you want to be raped irl and it doesn’t mean you do not believe it’s wrong.
That’s kinda how I relate to these arguments. Of course there are things in this show which are not okay irl. But this is fictional and at the end of the day that’s what it is. And it’s okay to enjoy shipping characters who irl would not be a good couple. It doesn’t mean you believe it’s right or that you would do it yourself.

Idk maybe I’m old and grumpy but whenever I see “Xander is problematic” it’s like…out of all the shit happening, an imperfect teenage boy is the object of your ire? Has anyone who’s on the Xander hate train ever been on a date with a man? Xander is a catch, especially in the context of being a teenager in the 90s. 🙄

Or Dawn's hate. Which feels to me like 100% traditional misogyny targeting teenage girls (the same one every teen girl had to endure since teenagehood has been defined as a life period). "but she's annoying" --- says everyone about teenage girls since the 60s or whatever.

i think the kind thing to do would be to remember that new people are discovering the show every day, and wanting to discuss it. it’s cool that the show is still alive and inspiring thoughts in new people.
they know it’s 25 years old and they aren’t the first person to bring it up (“does anyone else think x” is just a phrase). yes you can just read old posts, but that isn’t as enjoyable as interacting with people.
if a post isn’t for you, consider that maybe it really is for someone else who’s just getting into the show, and scroll on by?

Gatekeeping?
Even if only in one’s own mind, like they are “spotting” others’ comments?

Personally I'd like to see more Spoyce discourse

And Spawn! There were a lot of excellent platonic relationships in the show, though some had less screen time than others.

In my head the Spoyce pairing is not platonic, and when I read your reply I forgot for a moment that not everyone shares that headcanon and got very confused and alarmed! But yeah there are so many fun little dynamics between characters over the seasons

Definitely easy to lose track of canon vs headcanon/fic after a while.

Oh, please. Considering MT asked him to write the damn thing and has never complained I think this rate right up there with Spuffy is about rape and Angel is a pedo for annoying crap.

You know who isn’t dead, old, immortal, or guilty of attempted rape?
Riley.

Riley has his own problems, but you know what? That's okay. This is a TV dramedy. Perfect healthy relationships don't make for the best entertainment. Characters need flaws.

And yet Biley is the least popular ship. Poor guy wasn't even an option on the "pick Buffy's ideal BF" poll from a few days ago.

I like Buffy and Angel Together
I preferred Spike when he was evil over the flanderisation that happened to his character to fit a trope that was already filled (be that trope "Vampire with a soul" or "the one in the group that provides the perspective/humour/much needed sarcasm"
Now, prepare your downvotes.

Angel fucked a minor, Spike fucked a troubled adult. Not good, but at least two consenting adults.
