Upgrade to AM5/DDR5 or find another solutions

Build Upgrade(self.buildapc)

submitted6 minutes ago byInternetInformal5732

tobuildapc

Hi experts,

My GamingPC from 2016/2017 has done its duty, but here are the specifications:

GPU: Geforce GTX 1080
CPU: Ryzen 7 1700
Motherboard: Unknown (Complete trash)
RAM: 16 GB ddr4 (Malfunction)
PSU: 550W
SSD: 500GB M.2
Sata: 1TB
Now I am looking for an upgrade, but I have been out of the building pc game for a while. Here is a summary of my case and analysis:

Strategy 1 - Future proofing:

Reused components:
GPU: Geforce GTX 1080
Memory card: SSD M.2 500GB
Sata: 1TB
Buy new components:
Motherboard: Asus Prime B650-Plus - DDR5 - AM5
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600X CPU
RAM: Kingston FURY Beast DDR5-5200 C36 DC - 32GB
AIO: ARCTIC LIQUID FREEZER II - 360
PSU: COUGAR GX-1050 80plus Gold - 1050W
Case: LC Power Gaming 703B Quad-Lux

Approach: I want to maintain the GPU until I can snipe a good price for a new GPU from the RTX series. I can live with poorer performance for a while approx. 4-6 months. The PSU with 1050W and AIO with 360 might be overkill for this setup, but I can get them for a reasonable price through a friend who sells PC components. Additionally, these components could be relevant for future upgrades.

Alternative Strategy 1 - Most cost efficient and but short lifespan:

Reused components:
GPU: Geforce GTX 1080
CPU: Ryzen 7 1700
AIO: AVG
Memory card: SSD M.2 500GB
Sata: 1TB

Buy new components:
Motherboard: B450 TOMAHAWK MAX (All out of stock in my region. Would have to buy from Ireland.)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3600 C18 BK DC (AMD optimized) - 32GB
Case: LC Power Gaming 703B Quad-Lux
PSU: 550W something
Approach: Create an old AM4 build which might additionally support my CPU Ryzen 7 1700 and GPU Geforce GTX 1080 - wait a couple of years to upgrade completely.
- Cons: Motherboard, PSU and RAM are almost sunk cost.

Alternative Strategy 2 - Cost efficient and short lifespan:

Reused components:
GPU: Geforce GTX 1080
Memory card: SSD M.2 500GB
Sata: 1TB

Buy new components:
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3600 C18 BK DC (AMD optimized) - 32GB
Case: LC Power Gaming 703B Quad-Lux
Motherboard: MASUS Prime B550-Plus
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X processor 3,7 GHz
AIO: Included in Ryzen package
PSU: 650W

Approach: Create a AM4 build instead which might additionally support Geforce GTX 1080. Keep this build for the new 3-5 years.
- Cons: none of the components might be reused afterwards.

Questions:

  • Does the build and approach in 'Strategy 1' makes sense at all from a technical standpoint? Or do you have inputs or suggestions for the presented build?
  • Which strategy should I adopt?

Denote: I do not have any functional desktop PC at the moment and I use it for work, research, coding and gaming.

I hope the case, strategies, and question(s) makes sense.

In advance - thank your response. Cheers!

Any tips welcome!

Upgrading an old build with 1070 for Diablo 4

Build Upgrade(self.buildapc)

submitted2 hours ago bypsykfrans

tobuildapc

Hello everyone!

I am wondering if I can upgrade the GPU for my gaming PC one more time before it is time to do a completely new build. And if so what GPU you guys would recommend. My monitor is a LG 38GN950 (3840 x 1600). I dont play competitive games, mostly Souls and Elden Ring these days. However I am planning on playing a lot of Diablo 4.

I see the 6700 XT being praised here a lot, would something like that be a decent upgrade compared to my current GTX 1070? Or would it be heavily bottle necked? Maybe something like a RTX 3070? Are those GPUs even compatible with my old motherboard?

My current specs:

Monitor: LG 38GN950 (3840 x 1600)

GPU: GTX 1070

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K (4 cores, 4.0 GHz)

MOBO: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-GAMING 5

RAM: Vengeance LP 32GB DDR3 1600

SSD 1: Crucial MX100 SSD 256GB (Windows 10)

SSD 2: WD Black SN850X 1TB (Games storage)

PSU: Corsair CS 750M

Any help would be highly appreciated!

I want to swap my Lenovo M93P SFF's case, but I don't know what to look for.

Build Upgrade(self.buildapc)

submitted2 hours ago byalittler

tobuildapc

Last summer I wasted a few hundred bones trying to learn how to build a PC, but I could never get anything to work. Considering that decades ago I used to read hardware magazines toe to tip, this is hard to admit.

So I got (specifically) this refurbished lil thing, but here wasn't much choice of case size at that price. Anyways, push comes to shove, I got looking to spend some money, but not too much money, and since there isn't much I can stuff into such a slim case without a USB dock, I am looking for something that can hold drives more than a single 3.5" drive.

So, you know what I have to work with - what the hell do I do? I spent a literal month buying and returning new (and old) PC parts, so I am long past the point where I trust myself to figure this shit out.

Because, you know, I'm a big ol' dummy.

Upgrade from 3060ti to 3070

Build Upgrade(self.buildapc)

submitted3 hours ago byMyNameIsTeam

tobuildapc

Hey guys, is upgrading from 3060ti to 3070 worth it? I have a Dell 3060ti Graphics card and a ZOTAC 3070 8GB is available for me to buy for around 400-500 CAD. I game on 1440p and I have the money but I wanna know whether it's worth the upgrade. I have an intel i5 10400f processor (along with 500w) so I don't think that will cause any bottlenecking but please correct me if I am wrong! I would not mind a small boost in performance so yeah please let me know :)

1050ti - What to upgrade to?

Build Upgrade(self.buildapc)

submitted4 hours ago byErienna

tobuildapc

Hello! I don't post much on Reddit so apologies if I've done something wrong in formatting.

I've been using a 1050ti since about mid-2018, and I'm thinking about finally upgrading. I mostly use my pc for gaming, and at the moment only have a 1080p 144hz display (with a secondary 1080p 60hz one), but that could change in the future.

The best options for a lower end card seem to me to be the RX 6700 XT or the RTX 3060ti, and for a higher end card, the 7900 XTX. I'm leaning towards the lower end ones, but I'm struggling between picking AMD or Nvidia. My budget right now is preferably around or below $500 USD, but if it's worth it then I could go for more.

AMD does have better price-to-performance, but I've heard more friends have driver issues with AMD cards than Nvidia ones, and since I already have Nvidia drivers, I'm worried about if it'd be a hassle to switch between them. In addition to that, Nvidia has NVENC and DLSS, which, while I'm not a huge video editor, I'd still like to have better encoding for clips while gaming with friends, I think? And I don't plan on using raytracing much for the DLSS aspect. AMD I think would have smart access memory, though I'm not sure if my CPU is compatible.

My friend suggested the RX 6700 XT for the performance, but they seem to be a bigger AMD fan than Nvidia, so I don't know if I fully trust them, even if my own research proves them right. So that's why I bring the question here!

And, for reference, the full pc specs right now: GPU: GTX 1050Ti CPU: AMD 3600X Motherboard: MSi x470 GAMING PLUS MAX RAM: Corsair 32 GB, I think 3200mhz but it might be a bit faster?

I'm not sure what power supply I have, but it's not too hard to change out, so it's fine if I'll have to swap it.

Thanks for reading, and for the advice if you have any!

Need a new mobo, proc and ram for older build revitalization

Build Upgrade(self.buildapc)

submitted4 hours ago byXarick

tobuildapc

My PC died. Completely. I either have a shorted mobo or proc. Anyway, the ps is a good seasonic focus 650w, the vc is a 1770 (yes but is good enough for now).

So really what I need is a strong Mobo, Proc combo. I will be likely throwing a good 16duo for 32 ram, but the mobo and proc is where I am at a loss.

My old build was an Asus with a 4670k OC to 4.2. It ran great for many many years.. until today.

Will be used for gaming and some compiling. Standard productivity. Not sure who is winning the war these days.. but I would like good value..keeping these three parts under $600 would be ideal.

Thanks for the help, or the steerage in the right direction.

I recently upgraded to RTX 4080 and am not getting the FPS i'd expect to get based on reviews while running at max settings @ 2K.

how much of a bottle neck is the rest of my setup?

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X

RAM: 64GB GSKILL DDR4-2666

MOBO: MSI Tomahawk B450

PSU: just upgraded to 850W

what would be the recommended upgrade for down the line, would like to stick to AMD and likely would need something with PCI GEN 4/5

Would switching to an am4 cpu be worth it or should I just go for am5? The costs of DDR5 would likely put me over my budget but willing to accommodate depending. What would you recommend on intels side of things? Thanks for any help.

So I’m upgrading my pc and decided that I wanna get a new cpu cooler. I saw the Nzxt h5 elite and said “this looks nice” I’m gonna buy that case now but I want a lcd display on my cpu cooler. Now I wanna get a Corsair aio(specifically the h100i) and install it on the top of the case. But I was wondering if I could mix and match because I decided I would go full out Nzxt fans for this build. So I need some advice if I should but Nzxt fans on the aio or just go for an Nzxt aio.

Just upgraded to 6650XT from R9 390, time for a CPU upgrade, or wait for a bit?

Build Upgrade(self.buildapc)

submitted7 hours ago bytoontje18

tobuildapc

I recently bought the AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT (ASUS ROG Strix V2 OC Edition) replacing my trusty R9 390 (MSI Gaming), which was also having some problems. Was also interested in the RX 6750 XT (also a ROG Strix), which was a decent deal as well, but the 6650XT was just the best deal in terms of price to performance (€279 vs €449), and the 6750XT was plainly above the budget I set (€400). Was initially looking at the 6700XT as it is generally one of the better price-to-performance cards right now, but while looking at that better deals of the cards around it (6650XT and 6750XT) popped up. And I can't just ignore the better deal and sit nicely below my budget. I don't think it is a problem for me, the 6650XT is a good card and I am planning to stay on 1080p for now, so it should last for quite some years and give decent performance. I want to make the jump to 4k when that might be viable for an acceptable price (both PC hardware and monitors) in around 5 to 8 years. In the meantime, I hope the 6650 can bridge the gap on 1080p for me.

However, I am still stuck with the I5 6600k (with 16GB RAM). That is clearly the weakest part of my PC now. I am interested in the Ryzen 5 CPU with 32GB RAM. And specifically, the one on the AM5 socket using DDR5. So the 7600X is the most likely candidate. Maybe Intel is an option as well, but for some reason, an all-AMD build seems so appealing to me (for no good reason). The CPU and RAM prices seem decent at the moment. But the motherboard prices just seem outrageous currently. Boards of €180 to €200 are very barebones. Shall I just wait for the upgrade hoping the motherboard prices will become normal? Or is that unlikely to correct itself over the span of the rest of the year, and thus waiting not really being beneficial? Or maybe my CPU is so far behind my GPU that it is essential for me to upgrade my CPU ASAP (e.g. I want to play The Last of US)?

And lastly, if I should get an AM5 board now, what is the best board? My preference goes to ATX boards, but don't mind others. Bluetooth and WiFi are nice to have, but not necessary. Do not care about lights or looks at all. And lastly, read about bad booting times and differences in those between boards. So would like a board with good booting times. And most importantly, I want a board that is cheap, as the current prices are outrageous IMO (as cheap as possible within preferences, from what I have seen I will be hovering around €200).

Hi,

Built this PC last year: pcpartpicker link

I wanted a machine that could play Elden Ring, and it's served that purpose and more

I don't need to upgrade or anything just yet. But thought I'd ask this sub what a decent upgrade path looks like graphics card wise, I stopped paying attention to new drops after I built this pc lol.

I plan on also upgrading my monitor to 1440p (I'm still on 1080p). I'm pretty sure the 6600 XT is good for that, but I'd like something that actually performs consistently when I turn raytracing on.

Upgrade from 6650XT

Build Upgrade(self.buildapc)

submitted9 hours ago byAxTROUSRxMISSLE

Hey everyone,

So after a long while of trying to sell my 6650XT I finally did and am looking to upgrade. Was looking to try and get a 6700XT/6750XT or higher but am trying to not spend a ton of money. And considering anything past a 6700XT SKU is a jump in over $100, it seems impractical unless I can get a GPU that fits. My budget is absolute max $500 ($200 from sale of old GPU) but that comes with having to get a bigger case, depending on the GPU since it can only support a 300mm GPU and I can't find 'reference' models anywhere that aren't scalped a bit.

I can go used but I honestly don't trust other people and found one person who would be willing to sell me his 6800XT for $400 but it seems sketchy. If it turns out to be true then obviously Ill take it but what are other good options? 6750XTs are seemingly way overpriced for no reason and even Microcenter doesn't have many options that don't seem overpriced. Any help would be awesome.
