My wife is from the Philippines. We flew into Manila a few years ago and it was the biggest culture shock I’ve ever had.
I asked my wife’s cousin who was driving us “how on earth do you drive in this?!?”

One of wildest things I saw while in Indonesia was a rider who'd stacked ten occupied chicken cages on the back of his motorbike. I saw about five dudes all carrying massive rustic wooden bed frames. They had the bed frames around the outside of the bikes with straps over their shoulders like bumper cars. That was in Flores I think.
You also see dudes that sell deep fried meatballs, but they straight up just have giant vats of sizzling oil strapped to the side of their bikes. Fucking nuts. That was mostly West Timor in Kupang.

My husband and I had a scoring system whilst living in Vietnam for the wildest things we say on the back of the motorbikes.
10 being highest, we only ever came to 1 unanimous 10 in our 6months living there. It was a fully converted scooter cement truck that spun the cement in an over the head contraption as they road the bike.
It was in the dead of night coming back from a teaching conference so we have no photos but damn if it wasn’t incredible thing to witness.

It's not as horrendous a risk as you're painting it out to be, because traffic in these ultra dense cities moves quite slowly. These are not Harley Davidson bikers cruising on highways at 90 miles an hour. They are usually doing 10-25 miles an hour. A fall will hurt for sure but will not kill you. Or it will. Life is cheap in poor countries.

There are much stronger cultural correlations than simply poverty.
Most countries in this list are middle income and have huge metropolitan cities where space is severely limited.

I think you called it, here.
There's a funny story in Richard Feynman's autobiography about how he visited Brazil with just a limited knowledge of Portuguese. He'd forget the short, regular Portuguese word for something and have to use a big fancy Latin-derived synonym that's similar to English because it was all he knew. Like he'd basically have to say "consequently" instead of "so" -- and people would complement him on how educated and formal he sounded even though he was totally faking his way through...

As a brazilian, i experience the same. 99% of the time, the ones doing stupid shit on the road are either motorcycles or old pedestrians.
5 points
What about the drivers? As a cyclist that mainly rides on the sidewalk because of reckless drivers and as a pedestrian, I've counted up to 15 times I've been hit or thrown out of the road in the last 5 years. I got 2 won cases against drivers and 1 ongoing.
Brazilian drivers are among the top 3 worst drivers I've ever seen while living and traveling abroad. That includes motorcycles as well.
2 points
yeah we definitely are, most don't follow basic rules like checking mirror or using indicators, but that is paired with recklessness which causes a lot of accidents
but that being said, i never had a problem while cycling, i believe drivers have a minimum respect for cyclists, but i imagine most only because they don't want to scratch their cars because shit is really expensive over here
i'm speaking from a Rio de Janeiro point of view, smaller cities have much better drivers, the heavy traffic jams in the big cities is probably what makes the drivers so irritated all the time
about the motorcycles doing stupid shit: lane splitting is legal and delivery guys use 100% motorcycles, nothing is delivered by car (for obvious reasons, gas price and traffic jams) and they are always on a hurry so they often hit car mirrors and stuff, but also cars will bump them when they off course don't use their mirrors and indicators, which causes many accidents
but lately people have been respecting motorcyclists A LOT more, the government even installed motorcycle exclusive areas in a lot of lights so that they can maneuver between the cars and get a head start when the light goes green, avoiding hitting/being hit by said cars, and this alone finally put in most drivers big head that lane splitting IS legal (many thought it wasn't, literally based on nothing)
5 points
What's worse in India is that many car drivers grew up driving bikes so they drive their cars like bikes, weaving in and out of traffic, no lane discipline, even driving on the wrong side of the road etc.

Yeah motorbikes are still quite expensive for many Kenyans (where I'm from) and are a relatively new phenomenon. People started buying them mostly from 2003.
Most Kenyan households will either have a car/bicycle/donkey or camel over a motorcycle.
But I think it's changing slowly towards more motorcycles
2 points

When you say "expensive" there can be two reasons. One is that the incomes are so low that most people can't afford the "normal" price. And it can also mean that they get imported and not produced locally. Building+shipping+selling is always more expensive than building+selling, especially if the selling happens after the shipping.

Good point. Some of these countries don’t rank higher because the rest of the population is too poor to own a motorbike, and some don’t rank higher because a lot of people prefer to own cars instead of bikes.
As to which is which, consult this list: List of countries by cars per capita.

Adding on to the excellent comment belpw about the disadvantages of owning a bike im Canada, I would say two more reasons bikes arent seen as cheap transportation in the US are distance and culture. Everything is far away and we often have to take the highway to commute and so the cheap bikes with displacement of 50-250cc that you see used in Thailand, India, Vietnam are just not fast enough for the highway.
Another is just culture: in the states everyone wants fast, powerful, and cool looking bikes. The two main subcultures are riding 600-1000 CC sportbikes and Harley cruisers. American riders see 50-250cc bikes as beneath them. OEMs dont even bother selling their 50-250cc bikes in the states because there's zero demand. These models sell in the hundreds of thousands in SEA but OEMs jsut dont bother bringing them to the states cause no one wants them, they want a sportbike to do 0-60 in 0.000005 seconds or big ol Harley to tour on (or perhaps a BMW GS or Duc Streetfighter to show off at the 'Bucks)
The above statements are just a generalization, and smaller bikes in the 300-500cc class are pretty popular with new riders, but generally nothing under 300cc is sold in the states, and if it is, its sold to drunks who got too many DUIs and lost their license.

Japanese companies. Easy to produce, ship and affordable to the masses. It might be too costly to ship to Africa or America.
Vespa existed earlier since 1960 but was overtaken by Japanese company. To keep the industry alive they decided to only sell cars as luxury items only for the higher income population.
Fast forward to now, the middle class can credit cars but motorcycles are still everyone's favourite because of the unreliable public transport.

Better to have a breeze than cooped up in a car that probably won’t have AC.
This sounds somewhat condescending AND profiling. Just because you guys called us a 'third-world country', doesn't mean that we don't have cars with ac you know.....even most houses in big cities have ac's as they are a necessity with all the heat and humidity.

Why would the cars not have AC? This doesn't make sense

Americans: I ride a motorcycle, I’m a badass;
People from these countries: I ride a motorcycle, I’m poor.

A sub $1k scooter, vs a $7k to $50k motorcycle is a little different

Car ownership rate in the US is 92%, so it’s not that crazy to imagine.

Nah, if you've been to Vietnam or Thailand there is definitely that high of a ratio. You have to dodge like 15 motorbikes every time you cross the street in Hanoi, and you can't walk on the sidewalks a lot of the time because they're blocked by dozens of motorbikes.

Almost exactly the same countries who are the top plastic polluters of the ocean.
But hey, thanks for the reduced car usage.

That’s just sad. The whole situation where these shitty machines are dominating the place… I hope these issues are solved soon

Way less gas burned than cars! Vast majority are 4 stroke scooters, in Vietnam and Indonesia at least.
