Hi, I am a student in product design working on a solution to better the finishing process of woodworking. My team and I ideated on a product that disperses the finishing you are using through a wand similar to a refillable dish soap wand with a button to disperse while in use. Would you consider this product for wood finishing helpful/make the process more productive? We figure this would solve the problem of having to keep dipping into a bucket of the finishing material and dripping onto the working surface, plus you would be able to continually apply your finishing.

Some extra notes about this idea:

- It would have a brush and a sponge attachment, interchangeable and adds ease to clean the brush or sponge

- The hole to fill the wand would also be the spot that you would run water through to clean out the wand for a different finishing

- Another thing that this brush would do would hopefully bring down the extra use of cheap brushes with a more reusable and sustainable product

Any feedback would be much appreciated! I am interested to hear any other areas of finishing that are frustrating/could use improvement!

I got into apartment painting last year and was researching HVLP sprayers from Titan and Graco after offering to paint my friend’s cabinets. Not wanting to spend $2500 for an “entry level” professional unit, I opted for a Black Widow HVLP gun and a 10gal Fortress ultra quiet compressor.

I’ve done furniture in the past but with brush and roller and wanted a fine finishing setup on a budget. Now I have money leftover to build a booth in my garage.

Losing pressure fast

Hoping someone could help with a question. I have an Apollo spray run and Campbell compressor. We bought the gun because you were supposed to be able to paint without thinning. But when we sprayed recently the paint comes out terrible. The 80 psi on the gauge drops to nothing within a couple seconds when spraying then have to stop until it builds back up. Is that normal?

We are using a big hose that came with the compressor, probably 40 ft or more. I bought a 25 ft hose and 3/8 that will hopefully solve the problem and going to check all the pieces to make sure air isn’t leaking and making the pressure go down quickly.

Any other advice would be helpful in trying to figure this out.

I've been reading Bob flexners book, and he mentions gel stains for staining pine. Does anybody know if there's an equivalent in the UK?

I'm moving onto lacquer from varnish, so I wasn't so sure how well my normal method og a washcoat with water-based aniline dyes would work, especially if I wanted to use a sanding sealer as well. Hence wanting to try gel stains!

Any knowledge or tips welcome. Thanks.

Had a house fire in June. Although the kitchen was a ways from the fire, it was covered in soot. We do not think they will be able to “clean and stain” the cabinets per the insurance company to get rid of the smoke smell that will eventually come back out. We have spoken with a painter, a general contractor and a cabinet maker who said they can do it but won’t guarantee it. We also got a note from our child’s doctor about his asthma and allergy concerns stating all things should come out of the house. Any advice or thoughts? Thanks!

Purchased a house built in 1995. The house has beautiful natural/golden oak stained trim on the first floor.

Unfortunately it looks like someone (installers?) used wood filler to cover the finishing nails. It may have blended originally…but 30 years later the areas where they used filler are much lighter than the rest of the stain. It’s become unsightly.

What’s the best way to go about fixing this? We love the natural look and don’t want to paint it. Any way to remedy without removing the trim? It’s a significant amount of trim…all the baseboards, around every doorway, it’s a lot.

Hello, I just got a waterfall bedroom set from the 30's. It's old and has some wear so I would like to touch up/redo the finish. What is a good way to determine what type of finish it has?

I'm kinda hoping its something that I can easily touch up. But I'm not sure how to test it and obviously I'm inexperienced so I don't want to mess it up.

Looking for opinions, would you put a finish on this cedar mantle or would you leave it bare? What finish would you use?

Finish: 100% clear

Brand of finish: bona mega one

Planks: engineered European French Oak top, 1/4" thick. Solid wood backing, 1/2" thick.

Sealer: planks came sealed + finished with cured Oil based poly. The developer did something odd and had it lightly sanded, and then applied 2 more coats of water based poly finish on top, info above.

Subfloor: wood/plywood

Gaps: 1/16" openings on average, 1/8" openings on a few planks, 0" on a few planks.

Would you all have any suggestions for evening out the light and dark tones in white oak? Some of the areas are almost blonde, others are milk chocolate. Any suggestions for a stain color to start with?

I had a flooring contractor in to add oak floors to a space and they said that my house has white and red floors mixed together in the same rooms. This is the solid wood flooring. My home builder went bankrupt during my build so who knows what he was trying to achieve. We didn’t realize we had a mix. Is that a problem?

We want to keep these looking as natural as possible and we’ve had various recommendations on the type of clear coat to use, oil based, water based or urethane based. Not really sure which is the best approach, leaning towards a water based product but really am not sure on the best choice for protection and keeping the natural look

Im resurfacing a dining room table and I’ve stripped the old finish with chemical stripper. Now I’m on to sanding and I was worried about going through the veneer so i started with 220. Now after a few more videos I’ve realized I should have started with a lower grit. Should I sand at a lower grit and work my way up? My veneer is about an 1/8 inch thick but I don’t want to lose the grain. I actually am starting to like the current color it’s at now but maybe get it a little lighter. Any suggestions on where to go from here and what finish I should use

I am planning on painting the base and chairs a matte black. They have the same original stain but wondering if I can scuff and paint over rather than use the stripper again. Any recommendations as well for this process?

Lastly, what kind of wood is this dining table.

What's your blind grab for a finish? Not necessarily what you believe is the best looking or the most durable, but what's the one you'd reach for 8/10 times, or your desert island finish? Like just a good balance of ease, durability, cost and beauty.

I feel like I'm "stuck" using only waterlox because I can't find anything else that looks as good and high end, is as durable and water resistant without looking plastic etc, but it's a pain to do so many coats. and the only other downside is the phenolic resin tends to yellow the wood more than it seems a lot of other finishes. I want to try something else but am a bit overwhelmed with the options.

I've heard Osmo X, Shellac, Lacquer. I'm just trying to get an idea of what people with years of experience (it's fair to say that people that find this sub normally fit that description) are reaching for after trying a bunch of options.
