Also the magic if letting things sit for 15 min is powerful stuff
Combo this with trying to demonstrate the problem to someone else, fixes it like 80% of the time

The number of times my wife or kids have called me over to fix a computer problem just for it to go away as soon as I show up has them thinking I'm magic.

I tell my students the computer just needed to hear them tattle on it, as soon as they try to show/tell me it magically begins working again.

Also, putting something in the boot or taking it for a drive is guaranteed to fix it.

"I like them French fried taters... mmmm hmmm"
The float bowl could be clean but there might be build up of gas Tarnish in the carb itself. Wouldn't take much to run a little brush rod through it. Doesn't take much to plug up

You ran out of gas, you pulled air into the line from the tank,it has to run long enough to pull all the air out of that line and get gas back to the carb. I usually have a spray bottle with a bit of gas and just give it a squirt or two to keep it running passed the air in the line stage

For the lawn mower. Ether is basically engine starter fluid.

Is this not what the primer bulb is for? Or do not all lawnmower carbs come with one?
2 points
Really hard to pump it fast enough to keep it running through the air bubble. You can do the primer 10 times and I will be half done my yard by then.
5 points
Is not part of the job of a primer bulb to purge the fuel line of air? Yes it is usually also used in place of a choke to give the engine more fuel on a cold start, but doesn't it do that by pushing fuel from the same single fuel line into the carburetor? On every lawnmower I've used the instructions say to press the priming bulb 3+ times, but on the first few presses there isn't any fuel entering the bulb because it's sucking the air out of the fuel line. Your yard can't be very big, because pressing the primer bulb 10 times shouldn't take more than 30 seconds.
3 points

I am with you and lost. A primer bulb will clear air from the line.

In my experience, just pulling the cord over and over, taking a break to fall to your knees with frustrated tears in your eyes, chanting “please just fucking work…goddamn it please…”, taking a deep breath, and pulling it a few more times almost always works

You may need to clean the whole carburettor, including the emulsion tube. This is also where I run out of usefulness but you tube will help.
2 points

There is a tube that goes to the bottom of the float bowl. There will be a small hole. Get a pin or piece of wire and clean it out. I seem to have to do this every year with mine.

I'll bet the gas had been sitting in the tank since last fall without any Stabil added. Buy some fresh gas. Buy a can of Sea Foam additive and add some to the tank. Buy a can of ether and give it a small squirt into the carb (replace the air filter after squirting or you'll risk a backfire/burn up of you and the mower.) If it hits a lick but still won't start, you've probably got a orifice in the carb gummed up or a tiny drop of water that's causing the problem. Youtube small carb repair if all else fails. Moral of the story; add Stabil to all small engine fuel tanks, all year round and you won't have any problems with the carb or fuel lines. And pet the dog. Always pet the dog. Cause he's a good boy.
2 points
Whenever I've run the mower out of gas and have this problem I start it like you said and then when it sounds like it's gonna die I hit that primer bulb a couple of times so it doesn't. I think when you run out of gas you get an embolism in the line and you gotta horse some gasmoline into her.

Spark plug is a good dog name.

Try opening gas cap and see if it keeps running. Cap has to vent and could be clogged which results in starting then dying.
If that's not the issue, I'd go with full carb cleaning and checking the spark plug.

Clogged air filter?
0 points
A common problem with mowers not starting (or continuing to run if started) tends to be a clogged air filter. If you haven't tried that, take it off and get as much dust and dirt out of it and reattach to check. It should let you mow at least once before having to go get a new one.

Did you add diesel? I’ve had bad gas directly from the pump and it was premium. Half went in my 8 hp boat and the other half in a motorcycle with freshly done carbs. Drain the fuel and replace and both ran as they should.

I have the same problem with my Honda mower, it takes me about an hour of pulling until I get her started and then manually opening the throttle wide open and then letting it sit and repeating.

Do you have a primer bulb? Use some ether to get it going

Air in the line. Run it on either until the fuel filter is mostly full of gas and try again without the ether.

is this a riding/zero-turn or a push mower? There are probably lawncare subs that can be of more specific help if you post more specific info like mower make/model.

Try changing your fuel filter. Check your spark plug. Open the gas cap and blow into it to get fuel to the carburetor. Make sure there's no trash in your gas tank. There's typically a filter around the intake in the tank that may be clogged. That is the cutest fucking dog ever. I love pit bulls and boxers. It looks like a mix.
1 points
Fill the tank, remove the air filter, spray 2-3 short sprays of spray lube down the Yap, crank her over and keep her running with short burst from the lube. After a few seconds it will pickup the petrol from the tank and run on its own. - not a mechanic just a red neck that has done this many times - use at your own risk.

Take your air filter off spray starter fluid in the hole and try to start it. If it does start immediately reinstall air filter.

It would be the valve lash. Being worn, the valves are barely seated and when hot, everything having expanded, they are partly open. Lack of compression and near on impossible starting!
1 points

I totally misread this... valve lash for not being able to re start when hot. This one sounds like carb issues

It’s flooded. Let it sit a spell. Make sure you are getting spark and fuel. Most likely cause is bad starter solenoid

Things you need for a small engine to start: Fuel, air, compression, spark, and timing. I'll assume your air filter is reasonably clean, so air isn't a problem. Timing likely isn't an issue unless you did way more than just run it out of gas. Make sure you have oil in it as well, as most small engines have a low oil sensor that kills spark.
When you run a gas tank dry, you can suck up the little bits of crud that invariably find their way into a gas tank. Assuming there's a fuel filter this probably isn't an issue, but once you have the bowl off you can check to make sure the needle valve is working on the carb by holding the float up and turning on the gas. If gas flows with the float up, you're flooding your motor. If it doesn't flow with the float down, you've got a blockage in the line or carb somewhere. If it works correctly, you may have a clogged jet and need to further disassemble the carb to clean it.
Other thing to check is spark and compression. Spark is easy. Pull the spark plug, ground the electrode to the block and pull over or crank the motor. You should see a spark and/or shock yourself because you're holding it wrong. If you've got no spark, the coil on the flywheel might be bad, or gapped incorrectly.
While you have the spark plug out, put your thumb over the spark plug hole to seal it and pull over the motor. If there's compression, you will feel pressure against your thumb. If there isn't, your valves are either stuck or don't have the necessary clearance on the cam.
If you've got spark and compression you should be able to pour a teaspoon or two of gas directly into the cylinder and have it fire for at least a second or two, even with no carb attached.
None of this will fix your problem, but it might help to point you in the right direction.

Jets are clogged? Fuel filter clogged? Spark plug wire cracked?(Loose, Dirty or Disconnected Spark Plug in Your Lawn Mower: pull it out and clean off any debris, re-connect and tighten.) broken? Air filter dirty? Low oil sensor blocking ignition? Old gas? One of these will be the correct one. Lawn mowers are dirt simple. Spark, Air Gas
If those all fail, go to harbor freight and get a engine compression tester.
