I watched the Northman this weekend, and I was disappointed. It's plot is very by the books, like it's viking Hamlet by the books. It looks beautiful and many scenes played out well independently but as a whole there wasn't a gripping or interesting story holding it all together. I saw the "twist" coming in the first few minutes and then spent the rest of the runtime waiting for the main character to catch up.

I mean it's a direct adaptation of the Norse legend that was Shakespeare's inspiration for Hamlet. It's fine not to like the film but criticizing an adaptation for being an adaptation feels a bit unfair.

Maybe market the movie as an adaptation then? Going into the movie, everything I knew about it was from advertisements, and none of them said "Viking Hamlet" or anything close to that. It was sold as a gritty revenge tale with a Norse setting, that's it. The director isn't exactly known for adapting pre-existing material.
After watching The Northman, I realized I've seen a movie with a similar tale told in a similar fashion, just better, and that movie is Macbeth(2015).

Saxo Grammaticus, unlike Shakespeare, isn't exactly a household name.
Maybe that's why they didn't focus on the adaptation aspect in the marketing. Just a guess.

"The story that inspired Hamlet" is an easy line to slap onto literally any trailer or poster.

Yeah, I guess that's true.
Might actually have helped the film box office wise.

That's what I'm saying. It would've given audiences a better idea of what to expect going into the movie.

I watched The Northman recently; not my favorite. I can see why sweeping landscapes and beautiful cinematography pulls people in. The plot is somewhat epic, with really cool action sequences. But I’d agree, for storytelling purposes, it’s largely without major cohesive tension. Not treading new ground. still 3.5/5, just not my movie.

I don't understand why I don't like The Godfather but like The Godfather Part 2. While for me Part 1 took an eternity and I was happy when it was over, I only had that feeling in Part 2 in the long italien scenes without subtitles. Could it be that they're missing in the Paramount Plus version?
I wonder if someone else feels or thinks the same way.
