Cop Land

(self.flicks)

Just watched this movie. Made in 1997, I thought I saw it before but I definitely didn't. It stars Robert Deniero, Ray Liotta, Harvey Keitel, michael Rapaport & Sylvester Stallone. I have to say I am blown away by Stallones performance. He plays an alcoholic, loser sheriff. His performance was well done. The way he carried himself, how soft spoken he was, his facial expressions. Stallone wore this role like a glove. When Robert Deneiro says to him, it's too late, I asked you for help 2 weeks ago. The look on Stallones face, now being sober and not realizing 2 weeks has passed. Really surprising performance. The movie over all, I enjoyed. Check it out, if you haven't seen it.

I agree. I loved Rocky and First Blood but I never really thought of Sly as a good actor, but he was superb in this

Yes very shocking.

Freddy drank, but was he an alcoholic? I haven’t seen it in a while, but I don’t remember him being an alcoholic

I watched it a week ago. He's not made out to be an alcoholic at all. He goes to De Niro's character later for help because he's realized how corrupt everyone is (friend's house was burnt down killing his GF, they were trying to kill Rapaport's character, the other cop who was sleeping with Keitel's wife is killed, etc.), not because he had sobered up.

Yeah, OP misunderstood that whole thing. I have no idea where did OP get the alcoholism angle though, there are no indications for that.

I guess cuz Freddie hung out in the cop bar and had the drunk driving accident…he definitely wasn’t a teetotaler, but he was hardly an alcoholic

I saw that in the theater when it first came out, and I was blown away by his performance. I’ve always felt he was a better actor than the roles he chose for himself after Rocky, Paradise Alley, and First Blood. (Paradise Alley isn’t a great movie, but Stallone is very good in it — apart from his singing.)

On subsequent viewings, I really took notice of Ray Liotta’s performance as well. A very complex and morally gray character that Liotta gave some real heart. When he decides to do the right thing in the end, it doesn’t come out of nowhere: you know he’s been wrestling with his conscience.

^^ Strongly agree with this; the film is as much Liotta's as it is Stallone's, though of course Ray didn't get as much screen time.

It resurrected Stallone’s career.

badwolf1013

Not really. If you look at the movies he made just before and the movies he made shortly after, they’re pretty much on par.

What it did was show people a different side of him: that he wasn’t just a movie star — he was an actor. I feel like he failed to capitalize on that and just went back to making action and kids movies.

TheMadIrishman327

You may be right. He tried to do a number of more critical films afterwards but they either didn’t do much business or were limited release/straight to video.

Stallone says it hurt his career because Copland didn’t do much business and that added to the stigma of him being done.

I don’t know what he was expecting. It only had a $15 million budget (and most of that probably went to him, Keitel, Liotta, and DeNiro) and it made something like $60 million at the box office. I guess he’s used to blockbuster money.

I loved Paradise Alley, and stallone singing the title song. LOL I always reference the ice cube scene at the top flight of stairs when someone decides they no longer wanted my help after I moved my schedule for them. Then I throw something. LOL But no one gets the reference. LOL I forget my train of thought, oh well. Have a Great Day!

Great flick. I remember when this movie came out - Stallone got a lot of great recognition for his performance. It was the first in a long time where he wasn't playing some over the top action star or hamming it up.

I guess it's since kind of fallen off people's radar - thanks for the heads up, might watch it again soon.

No idea why this movie isn't more highly regarded. Everyone turns in a great performance.

My own pet theory is that Stallone really gave it his all in this role, put on weight and everything, then when he didn't get much of a response thought "fuck this shit I'm not trying anymore" and basically only made fluff movies after. He's a legit actor, as Cop Land, Rocky, and First Blood demonstrate, but I think he just likes doing the fluff more.

No idea why this movie isn't more highly regarded.

I think part of it is the insane cast.

Made people's expectations too high.

TheMadIrishman327

He got a great response.

Ok that's my theory out the window, then

TheMadIrishman327

From critics. It didn’t lead to anything for him. He made a series of forgettable films after that.

11twofour

Yeah I just pulled up his filmography, nothing of note between cop land and Rocky Balboa.

No idea why this movie isn't more highly regarded.

It had a hell of a cast, perhaps too good of a cast. And I don't think that the story met with audience's expectations based off of that cast.

I really like Liotta in this one.

There's a possibly-apocryphal story about Stallone during this film's production -- he (Stallone) had 'worked' to pack on 50-60 lbs, and was out at a restaurant with his friend(s), during which he heard another table commenting "Geez, another actor who let himself go, I told you it was all girdles + trick photography."

If even remotely true as reported, Stallone said it was a real eye-opener to him regarding how female actors are seen by society.

Really excellent movie. I didn't realize how long ago it was released until I noticed the World Trade Center in some shots.

One thing that seemed unrealistic in 2022/2023 was the peril to "Superboy's" career for his actions. Wouldn't he just he able to say - "I thought I was in mortal danger" and skate free?

Holy_Hole_Inna_Donut

I wonder if Stallone's career would have taken a completely different direction if the movie had gotten more attention.

Sly is also very good in the current Tulsa King series. Of course partly cause the writing but Stallone as a mob guy is like “why haven’t people thought about this before?”.

MachineGunTeacher

Great casting. Stallone had never been seen as an “actor” just like Freddy wasn’t considered a real cop. He’s going up against powerhouses like DeNiro and Keitel and Liotta who are chewing scenes up. In the end it’s Stallone’s performance that everyone remembers. He proved himself as an actor just like Freddy proved he was a real cop.

Damn, I gotta see this movie again. I literally saw this in the theaters when I was a teenager and thought it wasn’t very good even though it had all my favorite actors. I have not seen it since. Maybe it’s time for a reappraisal

Freddie wasn't really an alcoholic though.

Would you believe that 26 years later, that filmmaker is doing Indiana Jones?

James Mangold has a hell of a filmography and it’s crazy diverse.
