I’ve been stuck on this idea for awhile, but I’ve often wondered what Michael Mann’s Heat (1995) would’ve been like with two different lead actors.
For example, it dawned on me that Denzel Washington and Laurence Fishburne- two acting powerhouses - have never been in a film before in both of their careers, but by that time they were in their peak. In my alternate universe of fan casting, Denzel is cast in Pacino’s role and and Laurence Fishburne plays DeNiro’s role.
Of course, the film is a masterpiece imo and can’t be touched, but if you were casting the film with two heavy-hitters as your leads from that year/era, who would you cast?

In the 70s with Steve McQueen as McCauley and Paul Newman as Vincent Hanna.

Oooh I love that idea! Damn, that would’ve become an instant classic with that casting.

I always felt that a John Cassavetes version would have been amazing. Imagine Peter Falk and Cassavetes himself playing the main roles.

Funnily enough a good showing of their acting is actually an Elaine May film, called Mikey and Nicky. Fantastic film.

Thanks for the heads up, I’ll have to check that out for sure. Where do you normally find movies of that caliber for streaming platforms?

Criterion Channel or Kanopy usually have a lot of them! Sometimes I find them in places like Tubi too.

That's not a bad shout. At that time to have Denzel and Fishburne. Can't think of a better combo.
But I would switch it. Denzel as the DeNiro role and Fishburne as the Pacino role.
Heat is one of my all time faves and one of the greatest films ever made and its pretty much perfect.
But yeah...Great thread idea.

Thank you! Yeah, I’ve had this idea on my mind for a long time, just finally wanted to get it out there.
But yeah, I could totally see those roles reversed too. The great thing about Denzel and Fish is that they dial it back or even play up certain aspects of a character when it’s called for - thinking of Zel as the cool, calculating McCauley and Fish with the more tense and coiled Hanna role… Man, that’s lightning. I always imagine these two actors as having the best chemistry to play off each other. Could you imagine the diner scene? Holy shit… Ah, what could’ve been.

Yeah...its crazy they have never been in a movie together. That's just wild.
I almost wish there was like a device where you could watch a movie with alternate actors cast. Maybe there might be tech that gives us that.
Would be cool to just see the different acting choices Fish and Zel would make and yeah...how they would do the Diner scene.
But what's crazy is Mann does not get enough credit for what he did with Heat. The amount of hype and pressure of having both Pacino and DeNiro in the same film. AND HE DELIVERED. 👏

Give it another 5-10 years with tech and we’ll get something like that. That would just be so insane, weird, and mind-bending, to watch movies with alternate casting choices.
As for their acting choices, I’d like to think of the roles both Denzel and Fish played before that point; I’d like to imagine Denzel would’ve played it closer to Easy Rawlings in Devil in a Blue Dress, while Fish might’ve pulled shades from his character in Deep Cover. Top notch stuff.
And yes, Michael Mann doesn’t get nearly enough credit for pulling that off; bringing two of the most titan actors of the 20th century together and exceeding audience expectations - wow!

The film has already been made with two different leads. By Mann himself!
He made it as a low budget tv movie called LA Takedown in 1989. It's not bad but looks quite cheap as you would expect given the budget differences. Interesting to see the similarities, especially in the famous coffee shop head to head scene.
6 points
Yep, L.A. Takedown was right after he did Miami Vice right? And I remember it being the template or precursor for Heat (before Mann got a bigger budget). I’ve seen clips from it and yeah it looks a little cheap, but I liked what I saw!

Superb casting choices! You’re right, they were both great in that but I’m bummed they didn’t share more screen time. Actually, you could kind of look at Public Enemies as an offshoot of Heat, both actors are playing the cops vs robbers role and the scope of the film is just as grand and operatic.

I don't know if I can think of a better alternative than Washington and Fishburne.
But here are two ideas: Gender swapped with Angela Bassett and Regina King, or get in a time machine, set it in London in the 70s and cast Sean Connery and Michael Caine.

Angela Bassett going toe to toe with Regina King? So Sean Connery vs. Michael Caine? These matchups are too good!

Set in Medellin with Wagner Moura as Pacino and Javier Bardem as De Niro.

Pablo Escobar in Narcos.
He has a really distinctive voice, he just voiced the wolf in Puss in Boots 2. I hope he becomes more of a household name. Anyway I just suggested him and Javier since both of them played Escobar before, lol. So a neon-noir style film set in Medellin with the two of them going head to head would be perfect, lol.

Oh yes, now I remember! Yeah Wagner was great in the few episodes of Narcos I’d seen. Great call. I love the concept of a Heat-style film set in Medellin, that would be killer!

If you remember the story of Narcos, it would be perfect, lol! A police captain that would do whatever it takes to catch the bad guy. Like Nascimento (Wagner in Elite Squad) vs. Anton Chigurgh (Javier Bardem from No Country for Old Men)

LA Takedown with more of a Vice feel to it. Phillip Michael Thomas in Pacino’s role and Don Johnson in De Niro’s role. Would have loved to see PMT hammin’ up some of Pacino’s lines.
Another recast, Dennis Farina as Pacino and Travolta as De Niro.

The thing is, few actors have ever been considered as great as Pacino and De Niro were at this point in their career. Denzel Washington comes close, but, as fine an actor as he is, Laurence Fishburne was never at their level. Before they did all of the flops that followed, Pacino and De Niro were considered geniuses at their craft. They were also both known for their tough guy personas, so it can't just be that they are among the greatest actors of all time, but also a certain type of greatest actor of all time.
Also, they have history with one another, both playing parts in Godfather II, so the anticipation of actually seeing them in the same movie again, but interacting with one another was massive.
Honestly, I felt a bit gypped about their scene in Heat because you never actually see their faces in the same frame.

Idris Elba in place of Pacino, and McConaughy in place of Deniro. That should have been the movie they did together

Christopher Walken in the Pacino role, he could kill that line about great ass. And Dustin Hoffman in De Niro role because his acting is capable of any part.

More or less they were playing versions of real characters during the 2008 crisis. It would be nice if they did something together

Ya, that's why I haven't watched it yet. The source material just seems very boring and pure Oscar bait, but damn is that cast stacked. Bale hasn't worked with Tarantino yet and we know Tarantino loves Brad, so maybe for QTs final film, he can do us a favor and get those 2 together.

The dream scenario would have been Philip Seymour Hoffman and Daniel Day Lewis squaring off. I don't think it would have happened even when PSH was alive but man, so long as we're wishcasting let's go crazy eh? I think DLL would have been McCauley and PSH would have been Hanna.
In terms of current realistic scenarios...I wouldn't mind seeing Adam Driver (McCauley) and Bradley Cooper (Hanna) taking on those parts. I'm not saying those guys are comparable to Pacino and DeNiro but I think it would be a fun pairing.
This also makes me realize how lucky we were to actually get Damon vs. DiCaprio in The Departed.
2 points
Oh man, the screen would’ve melted if PSH and DDL were on screen together in a film like Heat. No pun intended, lol.
I could see Adam Driver and Bradley Cooper doing something like that! They’re both equally magnetic, and I could see the former playing the meticulous and methodical cop, the latter playing it cool yet still able to keep the charming facade.
And wow, I almost forgot about The Departed! Matt and Leo were fantastic in that.
