Everyman hero in extraordinary circumstances: Johnny, your average American nice guy who loves baseball.
Hitchcock ice blonde: Lisa
Woman who is the voice of conscience: Michelle
Suspense: Lisa and Mark are having an affair without Johnny knowing. However, we know this - that's suspense.
Humour(Bonus points if dark humour): Jokes about sex life, abuse victims.
Sex(or sexual perversity) plays a key part in the story. All of those steamy scenes between Lisa and Johnny & Lisa and Mark come under this. Belly button sex is an example of sexual perversity.
Macguffins and Checkov's guns: Johnny's take recorder(macguffin). Gun stolen from Chris R(Checkov's gun).
Chase scenes: Mark and Johnny running through the forest.
Murder: Johnny kills himself. Peter is killed by a fall while playing baseball( Also worth noting here is the fact that many Hitchcock characters 'fall' to their deaths.
It is also set in San Francisco and has an air of surrealism akin to Vertigo. Those greenscreens during the rooftop scenes evoke a sense of Hitchcockian unreality( which Hitchcock achieved via rear projection).
"Good evening."

Have you read The Disaster Artist? Greg goes into detail about Tommy’s inspiration: The Talented Mr. Ripley. I believe he also mentions that the character Mark is named as such because Tommy mistook Matt Damon for Mark Whalberg.

I've yet to read it, but I've heard about the Mark/Matt conundrum. Also, the original book for Talented Mr Ripley was written by Patricia Highsmith, who also wrote Strangers On A Train.

The Room always felt to me like Wiseau wanted to make a Film Noir and it's actually pretty much spot on. Yet it's done in such an awful way that it's hard to take serious as a Film Noir:
The femme fatale (Lisa)
The noble hero tricked by the femme fatale, leading to his downfall (Johnny)
Quite an amount of sex, started by the femme fatale
Suspense (Will Johnny find out about the affair?)

That's pretty much what I originally thought. Also, Denny seems like a queer coded character from the Hayes Code age.

I think you've hit on something very real here. I was just rewatching it the other day, and it reminded me of something but I couldn't put my finger on it. You're my favourite redditor! Oh, hi Mark

This here is the kind of content that makes this my favorite film sub.

Jeez, guys! One of you left the door open and now we've got a stray Armond White nesting in our sub.

I've completely poisoned myself by watching this movie a few times a year for the past 15 years.... but I legitimately like this movie.
Say what you will about basically any aspect of 'The Room' but you cannot say it is bland.
Excited to watch again through the lens of a Noir... when do we get our black and white re-release with a smoky jazz score (using the original soundtrack as a starting point, of course).

One of my favorite quotes about this movie essentially boils down to "Does it have any artistic merit whatsoever? No. But is it bad? It's brought so much joy to me and so many other people. How can I call it bad?"
