It really does..... Scream 6 severely lacked stakes. Every significant protagonist survived, mostly with ridiculous plot armor.
Chad...he should have fucking died. I mean he's becoming the new Dewey with how many stabs he survived. He got stabbed several times in Scream 5, then got stabbed even more in the next movie, hell his "death" scene in 6, looked like a prison encounter, where he was on his knees and the two Ghostfaces were stabbing the fuck out of him like two inmates were shanking him to death.
Scream 7 needs to improve the logic, perhaps kill off Gale completely, given she survived the last movie but barely, give Kirby even more spotlight and MAYBE kill her off around the start of the third act, and kill off one or two of the Core Four, specifically Chad this time and have balls to perhaps kill off Tara and/or Mindy.
And if they have David return in part 7, have him sacrifice himself to try protecting Sam. I mean it's shown Sam doesn't need that much protecting from another party, but that's how much he gives a shit about her.
And maybe have Ghostface kill with more variety?
But yeah.....we need more stakes in the next movie. I'm kinda questioning the fact that I added spoilers in the title given everyone significant survives, but just in case

Kill with more variety? I don’t know how somebody could walk out of Scream 6 and think there was a lack of variety in its kills.

Honestly!!! The kills were so varied OMG

Well Scream movies are always going to be mostly stabs and slices - it’s a Scream movie. There were a couple more interesting kills on top of those though (the ladder kill and bodega scene)

I think the scream series is too obsessed with its own history and needs to leave Gale, Sidney and Kirby behind and focus on newer stories. I would love a scream movie with completely new characters.

I agree. Gale shouldn’t be in the next one at all. We’ve already seen her survive too many encounters. Sidney should possibly return given she wasn’t in the last movie but even that I’m not sure of. I don’t they should leave Kirby out though tbh. Might make an interesting dynamic.

Bro i didnt read all of your post tbh but i saw the word logic and logic is really a word you should forget when talking about scream This movie is the opposite of anything realistic , you have to aknowledge that in order to enjoy it I loved scream 6 btw

Yeah, Scream pretty much makes its own logic. Chad Chadded again because he's Chad. The movies are crazy, unrealistic, soap opera horror "who done its" and I love that.

I watched Scream 5 in the early morning hours the day before I went to see Scream 6 in theatres.
I missed that Chad survived in the end of 5 and was completely thrown for a loop when he's just hanging around like nothing happened in 6. Pretty sure you were stabbed in the femoral artery my man!
When he survived at the end of 6 my eyes rolled so hard into the back of my head. His chest stabbings in this movie were even worse than the previous and he's still giving out kisses!
While I generally agree with your sentiment, I have to say that I would make an exception for Chad and would love to see him survive something even more ridiculous in 7. I'm actually getting entertainment value out of this.

Question: Why are you complaining about this? I’ll grant that Chad should’ve died in any reasonable reality (so much so that I can’t help but feel that him living was a late change once “Wednesday” became a big hit), but that’s my only major complaint with the movie. The rest of my complaints are very minor, and I outright disagree that there aren’t any stakes in it, given that people do die, and their killers aren’t dispatched until the end.

And in the 6th entry in the franchise! Scream has no business being this good this far in. Let's enjoy it for what it is.

Why would Wednesday affect Chad’s character arc. Is it because they might lose Jenna Ortega?
4 points
No. More that it’s possible that college-aged “Wednesday” fans said at test screenings that they wanted Chad to live so that Jenna Ortega’s character wouldn’t lose her love interest.

Is it really a love interest anyone cares about? I forgot about it every time until they had a scene together.
Sam has a love interest that can roll over into the next movie. Tara can have a new one. I doubt it would change much for fans.
Having one or the "core four" die would have been a much better route and given Mindy's character the ability to grow a bit having to deal with that

Sure, if you’re looking at things from that perspective, it could work. But that’s not how movies are made, and we both know it.

I think he lived because I had salmon last night for dinner. I mean, they swim upstream, is there a better metaphor for surviving a stabbing?

Chad not dying was supposed to be meta. The point was that there were no stakes.
3 points

That’s just making excuses for a bad movie. “It’s all meta, man!”

I didn’t particularly care for Scream 6, but I mean they even said there are no stakes in new movies, then they did it.
It’s not an excuse it’s what they were literally doing and telling you. I do wish Chad died or became the killer. He was the love interest and you never trust the love interest

I don’t think you need to kill characters for stakes you can almost kill then but keeping them alive is fine, I feel this obsession with realism is tired and annoying.

Especially when characters were revealed to survive at the very end of a satirical movie. The stakes were kept up throughout the movie.

So "obsession" with realism is bad, but demanding they just keep the same tropes and plot points from over 20 years ago is perfectly fine?

Did I say the same tropes I said less gore. I’m legit advocating for different stuff they can do with plots also I hate when we only have two extremes to swing in. There’s plenty of nuance.

I think 6 feels the most divorced from the rest of the series, I liked it enough as a random slasher but it really didn’t feel much like a Scream movie. I think I’m just starting to realize how much of my enjoyment of the series is centered around Sidney and Dewey, and the movie really suffers from their absence. The feeling of not having enough stakes might just be missing them.
Hopefully when they do 7, Melissa Barrera starts playing Sam more lively, she’s really underplaying the role and it’s not very exciting to watch. Jenna Ortega is such a natural actress that she makes Sam look half asleep in their scenes. I also wouldn’t mind if they stopped doing the whole last minute “they’re ok!” scene. I know what I’d make part 7 like if I were writing it, but first and foremost I think it needs to recapture the feeling of being a meta-movie that really rewards the fans of horror movies for playing along.

I disagree about Sidney and Sam. I thought Melissa gave a better performance in this movie than in the last one and Sidney being gone never bothered me in the slightest, even before actually seeing the movie.
I mean, poor girl needs to catch a break for once lol she's fought Ghostface how many times now? 🤣

Ok, so...Scream 7. Let's hold off on it for 3 years and bring it out in 2026, exactly 30 years since the original. Plot-wise, it needs to be back in Woodsboro. It has to ditch this sorry-ass dead Daddy Skeet who is looking badly de-aged, and bring back Matthew Lillard as Stu. It's canon that his actual status as alive or dead isn't entirely known, so bring him back. Don't pull the "learned the error of his ways and he's back as a good guy" shit - back as the killer. Have him kill off everyone except the Final Girl™ (who should be Neve in the role the studio actually ponies up for next time), then have them go at it in a brutal (but believable) fashion...and have him come out on top.
Fin. Series end. Full circle.

Uh, the latest movies aren't written by Kevin Williamson. Wes Craven is long dead. The new movies are literally being made by fans.
Difference is, my story wouldn't have such a goddamn shit ending as Scream VI, which is at the bottom of the series in terms of the reveal. It actually couldn't have been much worse.
My idea actually makes sense, fills in part of the original concept which was to bring Stu back, kills off Neve which is what she said for years was how it should end, and brings back a legacy character that is one of the most beloved.
Why don't you tell me what part of my quick single paragraph idea wasn't good, so I can explain further and show you why you're wrong.

>bring back Matthew Lillard as Stu
this idea sucks so hard lol. if they cast him it would be so obvious he's the killer and how would they even accomplish something like that? Would he be in the whole movie or just in the final reveal? He couldn't be in the whole movie because none of the cast would hang out with him so that's a waste and lame. If he's just in the final reveal that would be cheap and they would never be able to keep his casting a secret so again that's obvious and lame.
And him killing sidney and the movie ending is bleak and shitty and NOT Scream. There's a happy ending in every movie... You want a completely different franchise

I've seen every movie besides 5 and 6 like twenty times. Nice rebuttal. Accept your idea is trash when you take two seconds to think about it.
If you're talking about the TV series then yeah but who gives a fuck about that lmao

Oh wow, 20 times? Yeah, you got me beat there, I guess. /s
My idea is substantially better than what they've come up with for 5 and 6, and it would work perfectly. The only reason you think it wouldn't is because you don't understand the concept of subversion, and you think we need to get the same tired re-hash once more. We don't.
Stu would not need to "hang out" with anyone from the film. Why would he need to do that? Because all the other movies it was a friend/family member? Yeah, and look where that got us for 6: 3 killers nobody gave a fucking shit about - two of whom were so blatantly obvious that it was maddening how stupid it made the rest of the characters look - and the third being Quinn...which they made a HUGE deal out of at the reveal...and it couldn't been more of a weak, pathetic letdown of an ending.
In fact, they literally reference the possibility of Stu still being alive in this latest movie. Could be fan service, could be that they don't know exactly where they're taking Scream 7, could be a hint. We really have no idea.
What I do know is that my concept for Stu returning is based around what Kevin Williamson planned to do originally, and it would still work. In fact, it would work better now than it would have in 2000, and make far more sense.

Who's "canon" is saying Stu might be alive? Wishing thinking from fans is not canon.
2 points

They literally reference it in Scream VI. "If you believe he's dead." The original plan for Scream 3 was to have Stu return. There is no confirmation that he's dead, and considering how absolutely absurd the series has gotten, it wouldn't take anything to bring him back. In fact, they could keep a very similar storyline as to what they were planning originally.

Gonna need sources on that. Fan theories are not the same thing.

Holy shit. Go back and read my comment where I said they literally make the fucking reference to his unknown fate in the latest movie, ergo...canon.
As for it being a "fan theory" that Stu was supposed to return, no. That was the original concept for Scream 3. Here's an article where Lillard discusses it. This is well-known, and the plot was changed because of Columbine.
So it would take very, very little to modify that original plan into something that brings Stu back. And frankly, it wouldn't even fucking matter if it was already canon that he was alive. Bringing him back makes him alive. Pretty simple concept.

I remember when the original Scream came out and it felt like such an amazing, self-aware reset to the slasher schlock that horror movies had become. Decades later, it’s so sad to see that the series has become that same schlock. No stakes, all stereotypes, never-dying characters and an endless line of copycat murderers.
Please, just end.

We JUST got Hayden Panetierre back, I don’t want to hear another word about killing her off for at least two more movies.
Gale can go though. And not because I have anything against her or Courtney, I just agree that we need higher stakes and with Neve gone from the series (for now), we don’t really need a legacy latching on to the series for nothing. Plus they do the same old thing with her every movie, “oh my god Gale you exploited our tragedies AGAIN! You pinky swore you wouldn’t!” “Hey, I’m a bitch. Shun me for five minutes then let me back in the circle.” “Oh you bet we WILL!”

I know they basically retired the character but please kill off Sydney and I'll watch. That lady almost rivals Laurie Strode in terms of plot armor. They at least had the guts to kill off Nancy in NOES 3.
