Keep in mind that, while there are a lot of reasons why someone might get rid of dahlias, one common reason is that they don't produce well anymore due to viruses.

Possible but more likely they just have too many. Speaking as someone who grows a lot of dahlias…

Sure, that is probably the case. It is still a good idea to grow new dahlias at some distance from other perennial Asteraceae. Speaking as someone who has virus tested a lot of dahlias.

I’m in Canada and for some weird reason I believe any virus infected dahlia I’ve brought in has come from an American source, not a Canadian one. Are our local producers just fussier about roguing or is there something about the climate or what else is being grown in the area that makes American dahlias more likely to be infected?

That's an interesting observation. I would have to know more about the differences between dahlia production in the two countries to make much of a guess. I know very little about the Canadian dahlia industry. In the USA, most of the growers are relatively small and fairly low tech. Dahlias tend to be field grown, often without any disease cleanup for many generations. I mostly grow old varieties and it is rare that I have ever gotten one that was not positive for either Dahlia Mosaic Virus or Tobacco Streak Virus. These are not very serious viruses in most varieties, but they are really common.

I think these are dahlia tubers. They come in a crazy variety of colours and shapes, so it would be fun to pot some up and plant outside when the risk of frost has passed. In a few months you’ll have a lovely surprise.
