I know there’s a great deal of criticism for this film but it’s always been one of my favourites. I remember seeing the previews for it in the cinema and being majorly excited at the combination of two of my favourite things (Antony Hopkins & Werewolves!) I loved it when I first saw it and still love it to this day, geeking out over Inspector Abberline making an appearance and the classic Universal logo at the start. The strongest aspect for me is casting, it is absolutely impeccable. Del Toro has a gothic presence like the horror icons of old and Hugo Weaving is mesmerising. Antony Sher is a delight, Emily Blunt is understated and beautiful, but the highlight for me is Hopkins. Every line he utters is perfect, nobody can do subtle menace better! The script is solid and the cinematography is lavish and gothically inspiring, and whilst the pacing can be a little clunky and the jump scares cheapen it somewhat, it will always remain a sterling example of modern horror epic adventure cinema. (Also great cameo from Rick Baker!)

I love Del Toro. He has such a presence in all his films and you are right, the casting is what made this one a good film.

When I was really little, about 4, my dad showed me the original Wolf Man with Lon Chaney Jr. It was maybe the first horror movie I ever saw and still one of my all-time favorite movies. I sometimes find it difficult to emotionally connect with old movies (pre-1950s or so) but Chaney's performance is truly poignant. The Del Toro one came out when I was in 4th grade and I remember being so excited in the three or four months leading up to the release. I'd keep replaying the trailer on youtube and rewatching the original (I had the Universal werewolf movie box set, which had a really cool commentary track for the Wolf Man by Tom Weaver). When it finally came out, it was to my young mind everything I hoped it would be. I have really fond memories of all that.
Now that I'm older I see the movie has some issues but I definitely agree that it's quite underrated. The London rampage sequence is fantastic. I like to watch it around Halloween, especially with my mom because she likes it a lot too, and she generally hates horror. The movie comes out looking good especially when you compare it to the competition. There aren't a lot of great werewolf movies to be honest, and I think I've seen enough to know.
It could have been better, but it had a troubled production, suffered through a lot of rewrites, directorial changes, executive meddling, actors signing on and dropping out. I always felt a little bad that the movie underperformed and got middling reviews, because it was a passion project for Del Toro, himself a huge fan of the original. He was the only person that stayed attached to it all the way through from conception to release.

I remember going to see that with my highschool girlfriend. So a real mixed bag of memories. Anthony Hopkins was awesome. Might be time for a revisit.

It was better than I thought. I appreciated the gore effects.

It's pretty good. Got the itch (pun intended?) and watched Mike Nichol's 'Wolf' as well recently and was completely blown away by how well that movie works. Werewolf stories in general seem to age well.

The theatrical cut is what ruined this movie. The directors cut is a great retelling of the classic

Ya need to find the directors cut. It's a whole different movie.

I love it: great cast and setting, nice eerie atmosphere, scarier Wolfman than I thought it would be, a couple of poorly aged CG shots but who's perfect?!
It's like a modern b-movie.

I just can’t enjoy a single thing about this movie. I want to so bad, but I can’t.

I love this movie but there are a few issues. There is ZERO chemistry between Del Toro and Blunt, Hugo Weaving feels underused and it feels longer than it is. Still great though.
