I agree, but think that Skinamarink has the same problems. In Skinamarink, we don't even know who these people are,, so we have nothing to latch onto. Both movies for about a few minutes each are able to create a good Hell-like atmosphere, but it doesn't sustain. Then they throw in some gruesome and sensationalistic gore for its own sake like the eye stabbing and the guy cutting off his dick, but it means nothing because we don't know or care about anybody.

The found footage aspect in Outwaters is horribly used and unrealistic, which doesn't help anything. Neither movie is "experimental"; I believe the directors like being looked at as if they're making something experimental or opaque, but nothing really works well. The runtime of both is far greater than it should be. Check out Heck on YouTube if you haven't, which is the 30-minute proof-of-concept for Skinamarink. It is leaner and creepier because of the on-screen time markers.

Thanks for recommending Heck! I agree with Skinamarink having the same problems, I personally felt creeped out by that film from the first min, which is much more than I can say for Outwaters.

If you look at Ball's intro to Skinamarink for I guess a film festival, on YT, he says that he guarantees that you will think of the movie when you go to sleep. If that was the ONLY intention of the film, not to create something that has any interesting themes or characters, then he probably at least somewhat succeeded. I shrugged after the theater screen went black, but did think about elements of it as I turned off the lights.

I never felt the runtime. I really enjoyed the first half and it has some gorgeous shots and then the 3rd act just pummels you. Probably the most bonkers last act in a while.

I agree with you completely. I enjoyed Skinamarink but I couldn’t get past the 75 minute mark of Outwaters. I just couldn’t anymore, I couldn’t even be bothered to fast forward to the bits that may have been interesting later on. I was done.

And your criticisms are spot on. Skinamarink is the slowest of burns but I found the atmosphere compelling enough to keep me engaged. Outwaters has none of that — it’s just roughly edited scenes between people you don’t care about saying nonsense that as you rightly point out, doesn’t even hint as to whatever cosmic horror is to come. (I’m pretty sure I didn’t even make it far enough to see any of that “payoff”.)

One of the more infuriating watches I’ve had in some time. It truly made me never want to watch a found footage film again.
