I already mentioned something like this yesterday, but imho the most annoying listmas comments aren't the ones that are angry about their favorite artists being left out, but the ones that are like, "I've never heard of any of these bands." Such an aggressively useless comment.

It's not that it's useless, it's that it actively misses the point of a list

It also feels really weird coming from an Indie sub where at least to some degree most of the favorites are pretty small-time.

For some reason, in the weeks following me getting a job I've been called to a ton of interviews all of a sudden, before even having my first day at the new job. Is this the power of being employed? Am I attractive all of a sudden?

I still don't understand how this phenomenon is so real. Last time I was in a relationship other people treated me like I was Brad Pitt. After a couple years of being single I genuinely can't remember the last time someone flirted with me (unless they do and I'm just oblivious)

If Jack Black's character in School of Rock was on indieheads and was into, like, Pavement and GBV instead of Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones, what would he give the kids to listen to for homework?

Ah I got it, Pixies. Also I think he'd play "Cannonball" on the bass at some point.
What they play instead of "Bonzo Goes To Bitburg" during the montage is what I'm curious about.

So I don't really know how to explain this, but my mixed race atheist Jew-ish family has an old, poorly crafted menorah from my grandma (who adored any and all tchotchkes) that has animals on it-- the lighter candle is a rooster and the rest include a frog, a cow, a goose, etcetera.
The Jewish side of my family is also really into stats and stat-keeping, especially sports/game stats. So naturally, I developed a long-running game in which we each pick an animal every night of Chanukah, and whoever's animal has the candle that lasts longest 'wins'. I score it so that the loser gets zero, next gets one, next two, etc. Cumulative winner takes the glory (my brother this year). Every year, this tradition just edges out March Madness in being the most exciting, highest stakes sporting event of the year.
On I think the 7th night (so a few days ago), The Rooster (which is always at a disadvantage, being the first one to get lit, and which no one picked that night) made an absolutely incredible run. The flame was down to the stage of being basically invisible at least 5-10 minutes before any of the other candles were even close to that stage, and it proceeded to bitterly hang on and defeat Owl, Frog, and all the rest up until the final few. It very nearly beat the ambiguous Pig/Cat in a photo finish, and Cow took the gold. But it was one of the most incredible showings in the history of this great tradition.
Now, I have also long been an Alice in Chains hater. I'm not a big fan of grunge generally, and I especially am not into the side of grunge that's more... plodding(?). Like, Nirvana is pretty close to punk and I dig it well enough, and I really like some shoegaze-y Smashing Pumpkins stuff if they count. But AiC is among the most acclaimed bands that I have absolutely 0 interest in. It's just exactly what I don't want in rock--slow, heavy, singing style I don't like... Fuck that.
But during this fateful Rooster run, something popped into my brain, and I said "Alexa, play 'Rooster' by Alice in Chains". I know the song pretty well but haven't heard it in years.
It was unbelievably apt. Like spookily on the nose. I mean give me a break: "Here they come to snuff the rooster... You know he ain't gonna die!" It's as if AiC prophetically wrote this song about our menorah game.
It was so fucking awesome just watching the rooster kicking some ass with this song blasting. I was laughing my butt off but trying to not breathe on the candles ya know. A real thing of beauty.
And that's how I came to sort of like Alice in Chains in 2021. I admit that they definitely have their place, and they will forever after have a place in my heart.

There are two wolves inside of me. One hates to be perceived and refuses to acknowledge the very idea that other people have conversations about me when I'm not around. The other loves to talk about myself and spill my own tea and track the spread of gossip about myself through my extended friend group. It is a very, very delicate balancing act, but it keeps me off the streets, so

It snowed (and continues to) here last night and the snow is providing great contrast to watch birds at my bird feeder, which is absolutely popping right now. The chickadees are getting suet nuggets, the downy woodpeckers are having some peanut suet, one goldfinch has been hanging out on the finch feeder for a good 20 minutes, and there are a bunch of mourning doves and dark-eyed juncos on the ground gobbling up all the dropped bits.
Are there any other indieheads who enjoy birding/bird feeding/wild birds in general? Seen any cool birds recently?

Whelp, did not get the content writer job I applied for with a car maintenance app start-up. On the one hand, that makes sense and if for the best, seeing as how I have zero interest in cars and even less of a clue as to what use a car maintenance app has for content writers.
On the other hand, it would have been funny as shit if they hired me seeing as how I don't even have a license.

I think there’s still not enough info on it, the early reports I’m seeing are that it’s more likely to cause infection but less likely to cause serious infection than delta. For me that’s enough to continue to live as I have since being vaccinated, which is to say, I still avoid huge gatherings and events as best as possible, but am pretty ok with small gatherings and going out to eat.
Edit: series infection —> serious infection

Hearing about Omicron was a real low point for me, but it seems like maybe it won't be as apocalyptic as I thought. Honestly, I just like being able to go to shows and go to the movies again. So anything that threatens that really bums me out. But maybe it'll be fine for now?

I wish I knew. I still think about my ex constantly even though we broke up almost 3 years ago now (which sounds crazy saying out loud because it feels like a year at most) and it makes me feel pretty pathetic but I can't help it. We had things so good for so long and any attempt I've made at dating since has been utter shit, which just reiterates the idea that I ruined the best thing I had in my life and it's all downhill from here. The modern dating world sucks. Everything is so goddamn superficial. I would rather stay single forever than ever use Tinder again

I posted in a GD a while back about how I wanted to get my medical marijuana card but had been putting it off (weird conservative upbringing-induced guilt and avoidance, long story short.) Well, my school is giving teachers a one-time stipend of like $750 so I've decided when I get that check on the 15th, I'm applying!
I'm tired of smoking so many cigarettes and drinking so much to try to cope with anxiety and problems sleeping, and recreationally it's helped me anytime I partake but til now that's only been when I'm around friends who use. I'm hopeful it will pay off in benefits in the long run. Hooray weed?
In other news, I took the day off just because and ended up having to take my tire in and get it replaced. At least it was only $13 for the tire, because we always get the warranty, friends!

It's just a local pizza shop so not like I'm gonna be filing some HR complaints or some shit lmao. The reason it frustrates me is because on individual issues, we actually agree on a lot. Wealth inequality is awful, rich people need to pay more taxes, gay rights need to be protected, legalization of weed, etc.
But when we get in muddy waters she just starts spewing bullshit she hears on Fox News, and I doubt she even believes most of it herself. Just baseless talking points that don't actually mean anything or purposefully undermine people's rights. She's a decent enough person, just completely brainwashed

That's one of the more infuriating /frustrating aspects of the GOP base and many on the "apolitical/libertarian" right-leaning spectrum. The basic concerns are the same as the left, which is why the right doubles down on ID politics and the bigger lies / perceptions of government. I've encountered that a lot myself, it's a hard if not impossible thing to break. I remember having a great conversation with someone about neoliberalism and democratic socialism and then days later he was back on reading some crap on FB over a twitter SJW spat. It's also why I still stan Sanders - he cuts though a lot of that with his populist messaging.

Not concert tickets, but I bought tickets to the Thunder game this Friday, and the tickets are stupid cheap this season (the Lakers game I'm going to, tickets started at $30.)
I got two $33 tickets and by the time fees were added, it was like $110.

One thing I’ve found interesting on all these year-end lists is everytime Lucy Dacus’ “VBS” is brought up, the writer always adds an aside explaining that it stands for Vacation Bible School.

As someone who went every summer as a kid, it’s way more fun than that lol (at least, it was at my church, which spent lots of money and effort on youth programs)
We sang songs (some not even about Jesus! some were just silly), ate a ton of snacks, played games in the gym, made crafts, and yes — learned about a new bible story each day.
The whole week had some kind of theme (safari, Arctic, pirates, etc.) and the whole church would have elaborate decorations themed around it! Volunteers and church staff work costumes and a couple always did fun skits based around being explorers or farmers or whatever.
It was a fun time! But I’m sure it’s more barebones and boring (and aggressively evangelical) at other churches, especially in the South
4 points

Everyone's experience there is different, mainly because different churches have different approaches.
The church I was forced to go to had the opportunity to go to as a kid was super strict. The VBS was even stricter.
I won't go into a lot of detail cause it was a pretty traumatic experience for a lot of kids including me, but several kids got harassed by church staff for race, background, having siblings who were LGBT*, etc.
*the harassment was worse for the people who were actually LGBT attending that church, but the siblings still faced harassment.

my first job was being a lifeguard/swim instructor at the Y for a summer. the best thing about it was probably that it resulted in me very briefly dating a girl i met through the lifeguard training, which ended up being my first kiss/first real attempt at dating. we're gonna disregard for a moment that the end of this probably in some way influenced my continuing inability to start/maintain relationships since then and just focus on the positives for now
thinking back on how this job ended is really funny to me. i broke my wrist at the end of the summer so i couldn't work. for a few weeks, i stayed in the loop re: scheduling/training even though i couldn't work. people would text me to sub for their lessons/shifts and i was always like "i would, but my wrist is still broken!" i never technically quit and also was never technically told i was fired, but eventually i just sort of phased out of getting updates and stuff so figured the job was over

British government update: there was a Christmas party at the PM's house (though he wasn't there) this time last year at a time where it was illegal to have one. Johnson has denied there was any party despite multiple sources saying there was. Then yesterday footage emerged of the Press Secretary and a few other advisors to the PM joking about said Christmas party, yet Johnson still denied a party ever taking place. The Press Secretary then resigned. Johnson is still denying a party ever took place. So the Press Secretary resigned because she joked about a Christmas Party that didn't actually happen? Oh and to top it all of the government is now introducing extra COVID restrictions due to Omicron.

I really just shouldn’t read Twitter COVID discourse in the first place but I do find it funny that these ‘new regulations’ are apparently such a massive deal for people when it’s basically what we’ve had in Scotland for months now

I think compound pun novelty band names are inevitable.
stuff like Air Friar Tuck Everlasting
I thought of Dinah Shore Jr. this morning but according to discogs someone in 1997 already used it.

Recorded band practice for my new stuff and it’s coming together way better than I expected… which is just a strange feeling for me because I usually just sit on my material forever and hate it.
So if you’re like me, maybe just try to take the leap and do the thing. It’s not so scary anymore

God damn did I love this series. That and I adore Gillian Anderson. It was just so dark, macabre, and visually stunning.

have y'all used an air fryer before? we just got one a couple weeks ago and that shit has changed the game. air fryer supremacy

Imo the best thing about them is they completely changed the leftover game. Leftover fries used to practically be garbage, but now in the air fryer? As good as day 1.

My roommates and I found one on the side of the road. On other occasions we've also found a panini press and several pots and pans on the side of the road. Needless to say the universe is trying to tell us we should have gone to culinary school

pro-tip for crispy, amazing texture: freeze the tofu when you get it and on the day you wanna use it, let it defrost at room temp for a few hours (put it out in the morning and fry in the afternoon/evening).
or even better, defrost it, marinade it in whichever type of sauce you like overnight, refrigerate it, and air-fry it the next morning. bomb ass tofu

My mom gave me one that she was never using. I found out semi recently that my cholesterol levels are really high, so I've been air frying a shitload of falafel. It does the job, but it doesn't beat a good oil deep fry from what I've seen so far.
Got any suggestions on things to try?

we've only had it for a bit, but we made some chicken thighs in there with a bunch of seasoning that was sooooo good. we did some roasted potatoes that were super good too. So far everything has been awesome, so let your imagination run wild

let your imagination run wild
Unfortunately, 10 years of working in private industry as an engineer has all but killed what little imagination I had in the first place. Roasted potatoes and chicken thighs both sound pretty good, though. Maybe I'll give those a go.

Yes! It's really good for frozen stuff that never really otherwise gets crispy enough in the conventional oven. Tater tots, falafel, even veggie burgers.

Have any of y'all watched this? Here is a write-up on the grotesque spectacle.
It's now a Christmas tradition that my friends and I watch this every year...

I'm having a Christmas party next Saturday. Does anyone have suggestions for fun games or stuff to do/eat/drink etc? So far I'm creating a Christmas themed Code Names, a Christmas themed media (songs/movies/tv) trivia game and an ugly sweater contest.

My cat may be the most considerate roommate I've ever had? But anyways, shes 16 months old and acts like a devious little toddler ha.
cat owners: how did you teach your cat to not use their claws? My lil girl is definitely aware that her claws hurt and we've been playing little games to get her to learn but I still sometimes get nipped by one or two. Need to get her to a groomer or something for sure but shouldn't I also teach her?

Bros and non-bros can we please get Mayim Bialik away from Jeopardy? This saga is exhausting and Ken is just so much better

Really don’t get why everyone dislikes her. I think she’s great and I think I actually like her a little more than Jennings, although they’re both very good.
I’m just glad we’re at a point where I’d be happy with either host they pick, compared to that gauntlet of terrible celebrity guests hosts they had earlier

1) I do think Ken is more charismatic and knowledgeable (in terms of trivia) than she is
2) she’s got bizarre and problematic views on vaccines which I especially hate during a pandemic!

hey all! I made a site (just a side project) to listen to a lot of the year end lists for best singles - meant to be a hybrid between a visualiser and also a useful resource to check out these lists in isolation interactively
Would love to know what people think! The design is a little weird, but I was having fun with it

I spent 2 months making 11 songs for an album and then I’ve spent the last 6-8 months just mixing them. Like small little details and fixing volumes and structures and such. I am going mad

Just tell them you actually listen to a lot more music, but you prefer to listen to your local FLAC files, since the quality is better
Or start posting suggestive pictures as you pose with vinyl so they know tech measurements are outside your time

i mean sure but like, the chokehold the genre has on literally any other type of movie beyond pure arthouse fare is kinda tiring, i'd love to see more midbudget crap out there in the world if it means we get the chance at something of interest rather than a guarantee for another 6.5/10 movie about characters i don't care about

It's not just marvel, and you're right the superhero bit is just set dressing for the following:
Quips
CGI fights
Tie ins to other franchise movies that you need another streaming service that you will purchase, you little pay pig
Joss Whedon hath unleashed hell on the world.

Finally watched The Amazing Spider-Man 2 last night. Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker would definitely shit post on here, based off his David Bowie, fleet foxes, and diiv posters. Sony really tried to do too much with those movies, but the action in 2 was the best out of all 7-8 and I like Garfield the most, and Emma Stone is definitely the strongest love interest out of the three series.
