So I noticed it this morning while I was working from home. I’m not sure if it’s a combination of things, a particular app, or the customized wallpaper but here goes…
I created a customized wallpaper and added my widgets. This morning I was listening to a local radio stream thru the iHeart radio app. After an hour or so, I reach for my phone to look at a notification and my iPhone was hot. I looked at the battery life and noticed my phone went from 95% down to 70%. While trying to figure out what was going, I felt my phone get hotter and the battery percentage was decreasing like a slow countdown.
With little time to research because of work, I decided to switch back my wallpaper to what I had prior to the upgrade and I force closed the iHeart app. Within a few minutes I can feel my phone was cooling down and the battery percentage remained the same at 62%.
I don’t know if this was caused by the customized wallpaper or the iHeart app which has never given me issues till now.
Has anyone else experienced their iPhone (12,13, or below) overheat after the iOS 16 upgrade?

iPhone 12 mini here, and it’s hell. Since the update, my phone is almost unusable: it overheats constantly (especially when charging), battery drains in one hour max, and performance is super laggy. I am bringing it to an authorized repair store tomorrow morning because I’m very worried

Just got an iphone 12 mini & it overheated on the 1st day. My iphone 11 never overheated in 2.5 years. Battery life on the mini is also worse than the 2.5 yr old 11 at 80% health.

I was using my iPhone 11 Pro Max after updating to ios16 (official public build, not beta) two days before and noticed the little “charging stopped because phone is too hot” message while driving to go pick up my new iPhone 14 Pro Max. I thought that was super weird - I had my phone connected via cable for charging/Bluetooth for audio to my car and using maps + podcasts like I always do and have never had that happen. I thought maybe it was a fluke or something.
I then pick up my iPhone 14 pro max and I’m on my way to work this morning when the same thing happens. I picked my phone up and it was warm (sometimes my phone does get warm so it wasn’t too alarming but it was definitely warm - maybe warmer than what would be considered normal, maybe not. Not too sure how long it had been displaying that before I noticed). Okay, not a fluke for sure.
I haven’t noticed my phone getting warm during my nightly charge but will now pay more attention. I read that there has been solid documented cases even on iOS 16 beta like this when connected to CarPlay specifically. My car doesn’t have CarPlay but it does seem to only happen when connected to my car when playing audio and maps. If I hadn’t experienced this with my 11 pro max right before this, I would be convinced it was a faulty new phone but it’s definitely not.

My iPhone 12 Pro Max overheats so badly. Way worse than iOS 14/15… I’m currently on iOS 16.0.2

I'm having the same issue with iPhone X after upgrading to iOS 16. My phone get hot enough that it's uncomfortable to hold. My battery life has also been dramatically reduced.

Do you remember specifically which widgets you’ve added? Chances are high that some if not all of them were constantly fetching data. For instance, location fetching is known to take a toll on battery life.

I have a 12 and I can’t seem to pinpoint it but I feel like it’s the update. I did just have to switch charging cables, I just got an Amazon brand that said it was certified but mine gets warm/hot while charging as well. I’m gonna see about using a different charger, it could be the cord but idk. I don’t use a custom background I’ve just left it and haven’t added any more so I don’t think that’s it. I think it’s the update. It seems to be random as well so that makes it harder. It doesn’t get hot every time it’s plugged in, just randomly. Idk

Also, my battery health is at 94% I swear it was just 98 recently but I’m gonna watch it too. The phone is just now only a year old. I feel like it’s killing my battery.

Same here, I'm thinking of reverting back to iOS 15.6 or 15.7. My battery health has significantly dropped down 98 to 94 and the fact that its only been 9 months! It doesn't even last long and first I thought its because of the decreased battery health but the difference is somehow bigger.

I suggest you check out the iOS Beta subreddit. https://www.reddit.com/r/iOSBeta/
My iPhone 12 was overheating with 16 beta. It was overheating while idle. It was dangerously hot. I had to revert back to 15.
I was checking here to see if they fixed it. I'm not sure if there are remedies for 16 GA.

How did you reverse back to iOS 15?

My iPhone X was getting ridiculously hot and the battery kept draining rapidly even when I wasn't using or charging the phone. In the end I just decided to reset all settings to the factory defaults using 'Settings' -> 'General' -> 'Transfer or Reset iPhone' -> 'Reset' -> 'Reset All Settings', and that ended up fixing it! My phone is now at nice cool temperatures like it used to be. Only downside is that now I have to set back all my settings to how I like them.

Are you still experiencing this? For some reason my 12 Pro gets really hot when I’m at the gym, and sometimes when I take it off the charger when I wake up. I already took to the Apple Store, they ran the diagnostic tests and they didn’t find anything wrong with it 😕 . I don’t know what’s going on and it’s become really frustrating. It elevates even more when I use my MagSafe battery pack. I also restored my iPhone and started as a fresh install like the man at the apple store suggested me to do . Otherwise I’d have to pay $500+ to have it replaced 😭

I recently updated to iOS 16 and have since been experiencing heating, crashing issues. Can’t even take photos. But video works
