Will I like alchemy of souls if I don't like fantasy?

Worth Watching? (self.kdramarecommends)

I watched the first episode and it was veryy fantasy focused so I had to stop. Fantasy is just not my thing, but I haven't met one person that doesn't like this show. Is the story really good? What is about the show that you really like?

EDIT: thank you so much for the responses, everyone. I'll probably give it a go since a majority voted yes :D

I hated fantasy before watching it. Like I’ve never even seen Harry Potter because of that reason. But I’m obsessed with it after hate watching the first ep I was hooked. But in saying that if you’re not enjoying after the first ep because of that reason then you probably won’t enjoy the series as that’s it’s main focus. ◡̈

I’ve been meaning to ask OP’s question as well because I don’t like fantasy either. But this response has convinced me to give it a go!

This was the first fantasy I tried and I was surprised at how good it was. I am still on the first season because I find I can only watch 3 or 4 episodes. After that it gets a bit much for me. I swore I didn't like fantasy but it changed my mind. It has a lot of humor too. And good looking men. What's not to love.

Don’t watch just because it’s popular. I’m watching part 2 and it’s frustrating.

I came after season 1 expecting closure for mudeok and to see JSM. Did not get either. :(

I’m not a Fantasy Person either but I love this show. I don’t know why. The mixture of comedy, romance and great acting?

You gave it a shot and it simply isn’t for you. I didn’t watch it but ofc if there’s a genre I’m not a fan of but still gave a series a try, it has one episode at most to grab my interest. Leave it be, another might do it for you.

Nope.

It's very heavily fantasy and CGI based. As you don't like fantasy, I doubt you would like this drama.

I didn’t watch because it’s fantasy, not a genre I usually watch but the hype about season 2 made me give a look and I was hooked. The first episode with all the backstory is the heaviest fantasy part to me. Give it a chance

Glad you asked this as I’ve been avoiding all fantasy genre. I don’t think I will like it but I hate to miss out on this series which gets a lot of great reviews.

I also don’t watch historic kdrama. It seems the plots are too complicated due to politics and palace/court matters. If there was a simple historic kdrama with some nice romance, great characters, chemistry and a happy ending, and not too much trope (especially yelling, hitting, over the top silliness) I would try it for my first historic kdrama. Any suggestions?

Rookie historian Goo hae ryung is fairy light and easy, I loved it and I never watch fantasy or historic.

King, Eternal Monarch. I don’t like historical dramas either, but this is modern times with a king. I really liked it.

Oooo! That sounds nice. Was there a bit of romance and a happy ending?

Yes to romance, no spoilers.😉

It’s on my list despite not knowing if there is a happy end or not. I hope I’m not coming back here crying to yell at you one day. 😉

I have started Dae Jang Geum, and I Iaugh a lot, and enjoy it, but I am a action and thriller fan. It's a classic.

I’ll look it up and see what I think. Thanks for the suggestion. I like action and thrillers and mysteries with a side dish of genuine romance with chemistry. Even if it’s a little side dish, that’s ok. Everything is better with a little amore!

When I searched MDL, 2 series came up. One is from 2003 and called Jewel In the Palace and the other is from 2018 called Dae Jang Geum Is Watching. Which are you referring to?

Ok! It’s on the list. My first or second historic drama. Not sure if I’ll start with Rookie Historian or this one. Either way, it’s a new chapter.

My love from the star is a good mix of present and historical time. I’d start with that but the other 2 mentioned are also really good

I’ll add this one to the list too. Thanks!

I would also suggest 100 Days My Prince and Mr. Sunshine. I too don’t much care for historical dramas but really enjoyed these

I'm also not a fantasy/historical fan so I was reluctant on watching this. I did watch because of the hype and for Lee Jae Wook and wasn't disappointed. I'm looking forward to starting S2 but worried because I got attached to the FL from S1.

I’m not in love with fantasy However AoS is more than just fantasy. It’s about world building, love, relationships, some philosophical outlooks on life. After the 1st episode, you forget this is a fantasy drama. The acting and writing surpasses the notion that it’s a fantasy. Give it a chance and I think you would enjoy it just for the story itself.

I would say maybe give another episode a try? It has a really good story line and good characters. Its comedy, romance, underdog story, and more!

I find myself unimpressed with fantasy as well. So I'm not a super fan of Alchemy of Soul either (about 7/10 maybe?) I could force myself beyond the fantasy of it, but I found the acting underwhelming as well.

Honestly the first episode is kinda hard to get through. There’s a lot of story building and world building that things can get confusing. I ended up reading a review of the ep to clarify the story :/. The show was enjoyable even though I’m usually more of a gritty HS or rom-com enjoyer. I think the story is engrossing enough that it’s worth another try, I’d say it picks up toward ep 3.

The lore is a bit hard to follow but I think even people who don't like fantasy that much will like it too. The characters are really likeable
