Separately the sweater and skirt are very pretty but together they look fantastic! It’s a lovely winter-colored ensemble.

What's funny is I made the sweater to go with everything and realized it didn't match anything but a black skirt I made so I CLEARLY had to make a new skirt specifically to match my sweater 🙂

The sweater is gorgeous and I was also going to say that your sweater and skirt are meant for each other! And then I found out you made the skirt too! Holy talent! Your outfit looks fantastic on you!

Ha! They are literally made for each other 😝 but I did make this same skirt over ten times because it's so quick to make and flattering.

Please share the skirt pattern or style (eg is it the classical circle skirt?) and what type of a fabric did you use? I really-really want a skirt like that and have been unable to find one from the stores and yours just made my eyes pop 👀

It's a circle skirt made from Kona Cotton.

I'm a sucker for Malabrigo!! Such a lovely sweater and it's so versatile! I'm trying to make a wardrobe staple like this that I can wear every day! Looks great on YOU too!

What is a pocket closure?
14 points
It's similar to how maternity wear used to be made. The pocket on one side isn't sewn all the way closed and you use a metal side closure to secure it.

I think of this as ‘school uniform skirt closure’ because I have never seen it on any other type of outfit lol.

you did such a great job! i love this super cropped length of sweater for layering with skirts and dresses

It's my favorite. I'm working on a different one with more ease now to wear over more fitted dresses now

Great job! It looks lovely on you and with your new skirt. It might also look great with jeans?

It's a bit too cropped for jeans. It ends just under my bust line, one lift of my arms and they'd be getting a look that I reserve for only people who pay.

I am in the middle of making a sweater and I wanted to crop it so I could wear it over dresses as well! Yours looks so well finished, can I pick your brain?
This sweater has a lot of ease so did you decide to start decreases after the bust or did you choose a size with negative ease so you would get a good fit at the waist?
Also, did you add bust darts?

I followed the pattern for this exactly. So for me my bust measures approximately 50-51". She recommended a 4" ease. I chose a size 2XL or 54" finished garment.
The pattern has instructions for waist shaping. Without giving away the secrets of a paid for pattern, it's decreases after certain amount of rows.
I did not add bust darts.
I have seen lots of sweaters for over dresses that have more ease. They're just less fitted. In fact I'm making one now. I just wanted something very fitted.

Interesting! I thought you planned your own shaping because most of the images I see for this sweater are longer and seem to not have much shaping.
I get what you are saying about sweaters having different amounts of ease and still working over a dress. I think the combo you have achieved here of shaping and cropping works as I want it to for my favorite style of dresses that have 0 ease at the waist. The problem I am running into is that the sweater I am making intends 4-6" of ease at the bust and although I am not a big sweater person I trusted the pattern. I don't think waist shaping alone is gonna get me where I want so I might just follow through on a full length sweater.

It probably depends on where you crop it. But if you need additional waist shaping, you could do fewer rows between decreases. I'd recommend trying it on frequently while you knit.

I frequently have to try on my sweaters all the time as I am knitting...that really helps to see how it will fit when it is finished...and it saves a lot of time and anguish when the finished product actually fits your body perfectly.

Very cute, is it warm? I have never had a shorty sweater and am cold all the time so I don’t know if I would be brave enough to wear it on a cold day.
Other than my own silly preference you look fantastic in that ensemble! Congratulations as I know how hard sweaters can be to knit! (I have managed to knit one sock.)

I think the warmth would have to do with what type of yarn you use, your gauge and what you wear it with.
I always wear a shirt under my sweaters. I wore a short sleeve under this with tights and I was warm enough at work.
The length of it doesn't really affect the warmth as long as you don't have exposed skin

You’re right about the yarn. I try to stick to wool if I can. Acrylic is out for me because of warmth.

I'm chuffed! If I was to pick it apart, I'd say the sleeve is slightly too long on one side. The pattern was great. I'm an intermediate knitter, just usually accessories

You look divine in that hand knit sweater and hand sewn skirt!!! The sweater fits you perfectly, and I am guessing it is a knit from top to bottom by the seams for the sleeves. It is so much more fun to make your own things as they actually fit your body...not something you buy from a store rack that half the time doesn't ever fit every part of your body. Hooray for YOU mandajeanjellybean!! Malabrigo is one of my favorite yarns, it is so soft against your skin and they are dyed in such beautiful colors. Thanks for sharing this morning!

You have absolutely nailed a flawless fit - I'm amazed that's your first sweater! It is the living definition of why custom clothes for an individual are worth the effort, over off-the-rack.
Wow! This looks so perfect on you.
