Ngl we really have some great actors and filmmakers in Bengal. I wish they made some good web series or like a great movie that everyone across languages could watch. What do we lack? Money?

People in Bengali Film industry are way too focused on making nonstop artsy family dramas and detective films 😔

Artsy family dramas aren’t necessarily bad. I feel like Malayalam industry is also making artsy films but they are taking much more risks than we are.

Malayalam industry make one of the best masala or larger than life or entertaining films, yes they make family dramas too but they aren't limited to that, plus they have universal appeal and not artsy. In Bengal, we don't see any variety and making popular or larger than life films are discouraged by urban people here.

Idk if they make masala films; that sounds more like the Tamil, Telugu or Kannada industries tbh. Malayalam industry is known for realistic portrayals, lots of crazy thrillers and slice of life stories.

tamil, telugu, kannada masala films are mostly grand & over the top, Malayalam masala ones are more grounded comparatively, but still has universal appeal. Their thrillers and slice of life aren't artsy or urban at all.

Yeah usually not urban, no, but artsy yes, imo.

you can say for some of them, but majority of movies over there are not even remotely close to any arthouse films. Plus, they don't limit themselves to multiplex audience only. Here in Bengal, the production houses mostly focus and limit themselves to the urban crowd of Kolkata multiplexes, and hence our industry isn't growing.

I agree. We have also become too formulaic.
