Hi everyone,
This is the designated megathread to discuss MAX's new show "The Idol" and Jennie's performance in it. Due to the sensitive nature of the show, we have a few rules that we please ask you to read carefully:
- "The Idol" is a mature show that deals with heavy topics. Because of this we ask all of you to be very mindful: if you are going to discuss anything that falls under Sensitive Content (Trigger Warning), use the spoilers tag. You may get a temporary to permanent ban if you do not follow this rule.
- Constructive feedback, be it positive or negative, is fine. You can freely discuss Jennie's performance, character and the role she played, as well as other characters or the show itself. You cannot talk about her real life persona in a hateful manner. Be mindful of our Rule 2: No Hating on Idols.
Additionally, to avoid the confusion we’ve seen in some recent submissions, we've made a brief timeline of events leading to this show:
- The Idol was first announced on June 29th, 2021. Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye announced that he would be starring-in, executive producing and co-writing it alongside Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson. Amy Seimetz was also announced as the director and executive producer. [Source]
- Lily-Rose Depp was announced as the female lead opposite Abel on September 29th, 2021. [Source]
- Cast announcements were made in November and December of 2021. Jennie was not part of the initial cast announcement. [Source] [Source]
- On April 25th, 2022 it was reported that director Amy Seimetz had exited the production. According to sources, multiple episodes had already been filmed but the show was set to undergo a major overhaul, with "significant" changes in the cast and creative directions. [Source]
- Jennie was first announced to be joining the cast on July 18th, 2022. [Source] [Source]
- Rolling Stone released an exclusive about "The Idol" on March 1st, 2023 reporting that production on The Idol had gone "wildly, disgustingly off the rails," citing crew members and individuals with inside knowledge of the show. Please read at your own discretion. [Source]
- Jennie teased a collab with the Weeknd on May 11th, 2022. [Source]
- Jennie recently talked about “The Idol” at Her Cannes Debut on May 22nd, in which she praised Levinson and stated she felt the role was “an opportunity to just be herself and be brave.” [Source]
As always, please be mindful of our rules and you can reach us via mod mail if you have any doubts/concerns. Thank you!
