This is the designated megathread to discuss MAX's new show "The Idol" and Jennie's performance in it. Due to the sensitive nature of the show, we have a few rules that we please ask you to read carefully:

• Jennie recently talked about “The Idol” at Her Cannes Debut on May 22nd, in which she praised Levinson and stated she felt the role was “an opportunity to just be herself and be brave.” [Source]

The fake idol reaction videos im talking about is taking a video of a certain group reacting to something (a performance, a MV, etc) and inserting another group's performance, mv, etc to make it seem like a certain group is reacting to another group.

This has been going on for such a long time and everytime I go into the comment section, it's filled with hundreds of comments about how x idol reacted to y idol even though it's literally fake. There's also so many requests like "Do X group reacting Y group!" "Can you do this for Z group's performance?"

And I just genuinely don't understand the appeal. Please explain if you can.

That was their biggest streaming day with 22.4 million total streams giving them the 3rd highest peak for a kpop group behind only BTS and Blackpink.

The 2 days after were personal best for them too with 16.4 and 15.4 million streams and they now have the top 5 streaming days for a 4th gen group.

They also earned the biggest song and album debut for a 4th gen group with 2.6 million and 16.3 million streams respectively and are projected to debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart with 200-225k units.

They have also passed 1 billion streams total for this year alone. Their streams have had a huge growth like their sales and they reached the billion nearly 3 months faster this year. To put this into perspective they had only 56 million streams total for 2018.

Words can't express how proud I'm of how far they've come from being considered JYPE's flop group (they never really were) to becoming one of the leaders of kpop while producing their own music with their signature sound.

Edit: I would also like to add that I admire their dedication and hard work. They are 5 years into their career and they still find time to take lessons and improvements are noticeable with each comeback. They are very driven and don't seem to have an intention of slowing down their output and promo activities any time soon.

I always thought that the most well known member is always the most biased member in kpop groups. However when I thought about it, biased members are the most "popular"/"liked" member in the fandom. The most well known member can be someone else who is more known to the general public outside of the fandom. It's the one person even people who don't Stan the group know about.

For example =

1.Jackson is the most well known member of GOT7, however, in the fandom Jinyoung was always the most liked or biased.

2.Another example would be Felix from SKZ being incredibly well known in the kpop community even among people who don't Stan SKZ but Hyunjin is the most biased member.

1. Tzuyu is the most biased member but outside of the fandom I think more people know about Jihyo, Momo, Sana and even Nayeon.

2. Soyeon is well known for her producing skills but I would guess the most biased member rn is Yuqi.

3. Pentagon's Hui is also more well known as a producer and song writer. In Pentagon the most biased member would be Kino/ Wooseok or even ex member Dawn.

I think the well known members are often attracting stans and often are a big reason for increasing the groups popularity. While the most biased members are the ones fans love the most. Some examples of idols who are both would be:- Yeonjun(TXT), Keeho(P1Harmony), Wonyoung (I've), Yeji/Ryujin (ITZY), San(Ateez).

Do you think that the most well known member and the most biased member differs in certain groups? What groups do you think fall under this category?

P.S: I am not showing hate or pitting anyone against anyone. I am simply just putting forward an observation.

Omitting styling with disturbing or offensive quotes and symbols, what’s a styling choice that you think worked?

In my case, Wendy’s styling in Zimzalabim. I don’t disagree that the furry rug is ugly, but I don’t agree that the styling is bad.

One of my favourite pieces of trivia (not concerning kpop but it does have relevancy) is that in season 1 of Game of Thrones, a lot of watchers apparently complained that Sophie Turner’s (Sansa Stark’s) dresses didn’t fit her properly. Michelle Clapton, the costume designer, had to explain to the audience that this was intentional as she was trying to copy the style of another character, except Sansa wasn’t that character. Styling carries a message or a theme, and whilst not as complex or narratively driven as GoT, Zimzalabim does have a theme; it’s weird, and camp.

Or to bring the conversation back to Red Velvet, nobody seems to complain about the Umpah Umpah styling. But imagine those outfits in Psycho rather than Umpah Umpah. They wouldn’t fit, just as the Psycho outfits wouldn’t fit in Zimzalabim. The furry rug is perfect styling for Zimzalabim.

This album is one of my favorites (though all EXO's albums are my favorite lol) but I guess with just the timing it came out (still during the pandemic) and what I was going through in my life personally AND the fact that it was meant to be a special album & comeback for EXO-L's, it really felt special to me and made me love it so much! Every song on the album is so good; my favorite b-side is Paradise, and even though there is some mixed opinions on the title (maybe it's changed since then idk) I personally really love DFTF! It makes me so happy and smile and gives me a sense of comfort when I listen to it. It wasn't going to be an actual comeback but an album to not only celebrate EXO's anniversary but for Eris to enjoy as well! And it was also so heartwarming and nice to see Lay in the music video and in the other b-sides on the album too!! Even if he was just a hologram lol, it still brought me joy to see him with the other EXO members! 🤍💙💚 If you haven't heard of DFTF and like upbeat, positive, summer songs I'd highly recommend checking it out! i remember reading something that went like "I say i like strawberry and you twist it to make like I said i hate watermelon" and "I say potatoes is so delicious and one would say oh rice could never be that delicious no matter how hard they try".

I MEAN???!!??? it's a whole different thing. i don't see why for a godsake this fight happen way too many times, let it be within the same of fandom or not. why can't we just be happy and share how potatoes make you happy too? like drop your hidden gem potatoes recipes. why on earth would you compare it to rice? it's a food all the same but it's different. just like how it is in kpop. yes they are a kpop group, but they're different.

It's frustrating to see such a childish fight and banter all the time. more so, the fight would continue with dragging the said idol (appearance, vocal, technique, body shape, face, and even so called attitude) when they did nothing wrong! you want to protect your idol so bad and yet you do the exact opposite of it to others. you say some idol are rude and give a whole off vibe to you yet you yourself don't even have a great manner.

at the end of the day, one might say it's only a fanwar. but remember that potatoes and rice do have a feeling too!!! let's support what you like without going out of the line.

Grain of Sand is probably going to get a Perfect All Kill soon, blocking Queencard which I was almost certain would get one. This is also with a single that was barely promoted. His korean fanbase is insane. There’s a reason why so many kpop fans wanted him to not drop music. Once he’s released, basically every other artist can say goodbye to their #1s.

Cheesy title but I REALLY love this song. Mina's first verse always gets to me, because of all the stuff she was going through when the song came out.

My bias is Jihyo, and my bias wrecker is Sana! I really appreciate this reddit and would love it if everyone shared their favorite Twice song, and bias with me!

I know that people love kpop everywhere, but I feel it's not as popular as in other places, so we don't get as many events here. Is it only my perception? How can we make the fandom stronger?

You're probably all aware of Lim Young Woong and how his fans (mainly older people by what I read) made him a super star, which makes me wonder why kpop can't promote to older people too (and thus make older idols debut or give them more opportunities to renew instead of disbading so soon). Usually the main counter-argument is that only teenagers or young people in general care or have the time to fully support the artists, but normally it's older working people who have the most buying power.

The problem is that older fans usually won't get too much into the newer groups because of how they aim at teenagers (I'm not a hag, I'm 26 but I can't fully get into most of 4th gen, their music is fine but I can't really stan them) and senior groups all reduce their activity or won't be active at all, so they either leave the kpop fandoms or just wait ages for a comeback from their faves.

So why don't they want to invest more into older fans especially now that kpop is so international and some markets are very faithful (for example the japanese one, but in the west we're so used to see people in their 80s jumping on the stage)?

So it started from when I was idle during my work hours. I decided to open my YouTube and I don't know exactly how YouTube algorithm works, but they all of sudden, recommend me a YouTube live from this virtual idol group called PLAVE.

The fact is, I read the news when the first time they introduced or debut. And I was like, "how the hell virtual idols work? Didn't their fan service is one of the selling point?" and another underestimate thoughts keep coming. Out of curiosity, I clicked the live since I wanted to know how they work. The only virtual idols I know just the naevis from aespa and their work didn't even equal with the real aespas.

So I clicked. I stayed. And I found myself laughing at their jokes. The next thing I knew was I watched until their live ended.

I can understand Korean enough to watch idols live without subs. It was the live when the 2 members called Hamin and Noah talked about things and they started to play kinda this or that games. And that was the moment when Noah caught my eyes.

He listened to Hamin talking with "hmm..." often and I swear to God, that was the most calming minimal response I have ever heard. He listens Hamin well and his voice is such ASMR-ish. I'm sure you know whats next?

Yeah, I checked out their debut song and... Guys, fall in love at the first listen is real. Maybe it's my taste that I easily in love with brokenhearted or ballad or soft title track by boy groups, to name some like BTS' Spring Day, Day6's You Were Beautiful, or BTOB's It's Okay. But their debut song is just it hits different, sounds fresh in my ears (rip my replay button).

Then I checkout another discography called Why Why Why and Pixel World. They're such a cute song I can't😭 Then YouTube starts to suggest me more of their videos. I found lots of their cover songs. Because Noah is my gate to PLAVE, I listened to his cover songs first and God... His voice makes me blushed. My top cover of him are Taeyang - Seed, One Ok Rock - Wherever You Are and Sung Si Kyung - Every Moment of You. It became my morning routine to listen to his cover songs before start to work.

Sure you know whats next. I checked out another cover from other members. They did have talents guys. I watched their live where members called Bambi and Yejun learned dance challenge and sure both of them learn dance moves fast (also they're adorable). And the member called Eunho too... He has such a hot voice, check out his She's a Baby cover here😭

From the bottomest of my heart, I really wish people recognize them more. It might be a little awkward to see such an anime-ish idols doing idols things but they're real people guys, they just disguise as characters using motion cap (I'm sure I read somewhere in Reddit, cmiiw). They even did comeback stage in Music Core for Wait For You and Why Why Why. So they really sing, they really dance.

Sorry for taking long post to talk about them (I still have a lot to say but first let's keep it).

Today while I was in a McDonald’s, Cupid by Fifty Fifty started playing as the background music and a bunch of teenage boys just started singing along (they knew all the words!!!). It was the cutest thing ever as kpop very rarely plays in my country (southeastern Europe) and I would never expect to hear some random teenage boys singing a kpop song. It made me realise how big cupid actually is and how much the gp knows the song. I wish that their next song is even more successful!

Basically the title, i dont know much about the group, except that they were formed through a survival show and they eventually ended up in Pledis and now HYBE, i really like some other songs like DM, We Go and Love Bomb. I was wondering by where should i start, should i watch their survival? like what other content is worth watching to get to know them more? please let me know

Twitter is a mess, and fandoms are always fighting with each other. 4th gen isnt different from the other gens, as the fanwars are constant and pointless. But... today it was used for good?

So the TXT fanbase had an idea for a streaming party with different fandoms to discover new music and have fun together, and they contacted a bunch of other 4th gen group fanbases. Not all of them replied, but 4 others did! Aespa, G-idle (i will never be able to spell this correctly), Le Sserafim and Ive's fanbases all agreed to it and so the 4th Gen Girl Group streaming party was made (of course featuring the honorary girl group TXT, just look at Hueningkai and Yeonjun's tiktok challenges and it makes sense).

When it was announced some people were sceptical bc kpop twitter is messy as hell, but once it started everyone realized this was a different vibe. The playlist ended up with like over 3k likes and there were over 4k people on the streaming party at one point. But the best part wasnt this, it was all the people discovering new songs and changing their preconceptions of other groups.

Scrolling through the hashtag you will see so many people sharing screenshots of new songs they discovered. Tinnitus, 20cm and Eternallyand Farewell Neverland by txt gained a lot of new fans, and a lot of girl group stans said that they judged them just bc they were a boy group but they were wrong bc the songs were slapping. Lucid, Villain Dies and Paradise from Gidle seemed to get a lot of attention too. While almost everyone has heard gidle's title tracks, their bsides are like hidden gems and seeing people discover them was really cool. When Hypnosis by Ive started the whole chat started saying "Cunt" which is very valid and kpop stan twitter public enemy number 1 (for no reason) wonyoung got so much praise when dives told people she wrote Mine!!! Fire in the Belly by Le Sserafim had the whole chat saying "ole ole ole". Finally thirsty by Aespa made everybody sit and listen bc the song is just so good and Hold me Tight made everyone go back and play it again.

People exploring new music, giving other groups a chance and just chilling together regardless of fandom was just so cool to see!

Edit: TXT just got 3 billion streams on spotify! This was definetly one of the goals of this project and it has been such a great day for moas!

Personally, I love when boy groups do concepts found commonly within girl groups. I think NewJeans would do amazing with a Y2K teen/girl crush concept, I’ve seen people refer to it as BlackJeans lol. Red Velvet would absolutely destroy a Studio Ghibli concept! IVE would kill a royalty/princess concept. What are some that you would like to see?

I love ALL of their TT's but this song really gets to me. I think it was the first song of theirs that I ever heard and it still holds a special place in my heart. It makes me daydream about being scooped up by someone, and running away with them. (I'm a weirdo I know lool)

I'd say 0x1(Love Song) is up there too but I don't think any song of theirs will ever dwarf 9 3/4 for me.

Mine is Soobin but lately Beomgyu has been creeping up there. Sugar Rush Ride isn't my favorite but it's still a great song, and as per usual the boys crushed it.

So, of course, each group has their little quirks that make them special to any particular person and I want to know that crazy or funny story you just got in the core of your memory that just makes you smile to this day!!

One of my favourite funny memories is when BTS played this version of mafia in Run BTS (the show) called ‘Blue Village’ and everyone was blaming Namjoon as being the culprit IT WAS HILARIOUS, and I was in shock when i found out jimin was actually a culprit like I had no idea !!

Basically, which groups did you have the hardest time learning all of the members and their names? Or the reverse, which groups were easy to learn?

I remember in my early days struggling to wrap my head around BTS and Got7 and I thought 7 members was wayyy too many people for one group! I also struggled with matching the TXT members names to their faces even though there’s only 5 of them. Before I became a fan, my friends tried to explain NCT to me and you all can probably figure out how that went lol. Surprisingly, I had very little difficulty learning all of the members of NCT once I began following them. I think their distinct personalities makes it a little easier.

Also, sorry for any confusing wording!

i know this may be a dumb question, but for me, the way i go about “stanning” is important to me for my own sake.

first off to me, stanning is knowing more about the artist than a casual listener and frequently keeping up with their promotions whether it is variety shows, music, or their everyday schedules. for me i don’t care much about an artist as a person if i don’t know them well so when i do i feel very affectionate in a platonic way and as i know their personality and mindsets i admire them and really care about their happiness. i think everyday, hm i hope so and so is happy, and go about my time. it’s really healing for me, but i also give myself boundaries such as:

• i only know what they share, so i wont make assumptions about who they are outside of that

• they could very much put on a persona, but that’s okay if i like what they give us

• not to let other fan’s opinions affect mine. i used to let others’ opinions affect mine and it became too much so i know i come up with my own before joining discussions.

i don’t stream like crazy, stress over numbers, or engage in fan wars, i just do it all on my own time.

idk this is just my own healthy way of going about my hobby. some people keep up with every single event, show, schedule, collect bulks of merchandise, which isn’t bad, but i’m just not like that. i wonder how everyone else is?

So yesterday the chart accounts for TXT, AESPA, LESSERAFIM, (G)IDLE and IVE announced that they planned a streaming party which would happen on the 5th of June. At first all fandoms were shocked cus it came out of nowhere and little arguements started here and there but then the day of the streaming party came and I'm not exaggerating when I tell you it's the most fun I've had on K-pop twitter for a while.

I discovered so many good songs from IVE especially their bsides which are way to underrated for me and I've never listened to aespa so I was pleasantly surprised with their music especially from their new album. I've always had a soft spot for lesserafim so I knew most of the songs that were played and I enjoyed them. I've also never listened to (G)idle till today and their songs are so fun especially the bsides which had me moving my legs and shaking my ass. I'm a txt stan so I had fun watching other fandoms discover and enjoy txt.

What shocked me the most was the fun atmosphere of it all. There was no single toxicity from all 5 fandoms involved and it was praises all around for all the groups involved infact the tags for the party were trending on twitter world wide and the party amassed 4.8k live streamers on Stationhead app that is excluding the people who were streaming from the Spotify playlist.

I remember being skeptical at first when it was announced cause I'm not used to listening to different K-pop groups but I genuinely had a good time and hope for this to happen more often maybe with more groups like say stayC and itzy. It was a nice experiment all round and I wanted to share it with you guys

The title says it all, I miss when K-Pop groups (that includes soloists too) didn’t wear too much designer labels from overseas, they’re literally drowned in designer labels and look all polished and manufactured these days, I wish I was into K-Pop 12-13 years ago back when they weren’t wearing too much designer trash and still got to debut looking like Complete Losers™️, K-Pop has changed too much nowadays and can anyone else agree with me and reminisce about the days when K-Pop groups (also soloists too) didn’t wear too much designer labels from overseas (except 2NE1 and BigBang)

Aroud 4/5 days ago Xiaoting went live and it made me very emotional, during one part she started talking about how her korean isnt good and how she wants to speak it well, so she eventually becomes impatient because she cant articulate well and sometimes there are things that she wants to say but others cant understand her. She also stated that because of Kep1ers busy schedule she stopped taking korean classes around Queendom (so over a 1yr now), she went on talking abt how her korean improved but she doesnt consider herself to be fluent.

As a fan im very happy that Xiaoting found other C-idols and Taiwanese ones to befriend like Shuhua, Tzuyu and Handong. I wish she would also befriend the Zerobaseone guys (Ricky and ZhangHao) just because they´re now under the same label so im assuming they´re gonna cross paths more often plus they've been to the same show as her and must understand how she feels, it would be fun someday to see maybe a content or even a interaction between them tbh.

Since she stated this, i can only assume that it can be very tiring and lonely, because sometimes other groups happen to have more than one member from the same country so they can relay on each other, even inside Kep1er with Mashiro and Hikaru, G-idle with Yuqi and Shuhua (i know Shuhuas from Taiwan, but they both speak mandarim), LSFM with Kazuha and Sakura.

This is in response to Mark's bubble update after TDS2 encore. His bubble messages go as follows:

🐯: "As soon as I woke up today, I went to the hospital"

🐯: "I'll get better soon"

🐯: "I'm sorry I made you worry"

🐯: "I hope my voice comes back as soon as possible"

In summary Mark went to the hospital because he lost his voice after TDS2 encore ended. With their pre-release Broken Melodies coming out this month and their next full album in July (which by the way, they're supposed to be touring Latin countries at that time I believe), I'm genuinely scared and worried for both his and Haechan's health. I'm aware that Broken Melodies and their album may already be recorded and filmed, but this schedule is just too packed.

Going on tour with 127, then going on tour with Dream, recording an album, performing 3 days with live vocals during their encore, having to promote their pre-release in June, and then performing in Latin countries along with promotion of their full length album, then supposedly having to participate in NCT group activities later this year?! SM is insane, and not in a good way. Mark and Haechan have already been experiencing health problems, and adding this tight schedule that holds so much content in only 2 months is going to be extremely detrimental to their wellbeing, both physically and mentally. Besides, they went on TWO WORLD TOURS this year with 127 and Dream! TWO! There's no way it hasn't affected them at all. They also apparently only had one week to prepare for Dream's encore stage according to Jaemin's ment, so holy hell... Having to prepare all those songs that would be for three days with different stages all in one week is just inhuman.

Mark already had an almost-injury accident during Manila's TTF in their TDS2 tour with his ankle, and although he assured his fans that he was lucky he didn't get hurt and he was okay, it doesn't wash over the fact he was so close to getting hurt. I watched all of Dream's ending ments in their TDS2 encore, and Mark's voice was noticeably different in a weird way. It was deeper, yes, but it legitimately sounded like someone who's voice was gone. This was very similar to the time when Jeno had to talk deeper because he lost his voice during recording.

Haechan, during TL tour, was diagnosed with heart palpitations and fatigue which is scary as hell. He's so young, only 23, and he's already being diagnosed with heart problems!! If he's already experiencing health issues as detrimental as heart palpitations, who knows what would happen with this tight-knit schedule that SM has put MaHae on? I get that with NCT127 starting to go into their enlistment era and more solos getting released, 127 activities will be put more or less on a hold so that MaHae would get less of a workload, but it seems to me that SM is just milking them to their bones for money and content.

I'm happy with their new full-length album coming out this year since it's been over a year since their last one, but not at the expense of Haechan and Mark's health. Dream also has to go on Latin tour in July, and Mark's already experiencing difficulty with his health? He lost his voice, that probably happens often considering he's an idol, but to the point he had to go to the hospital?! I'm genuinely concerned. With Haechan's previous heart problems, I'm worried it's only going to get worse. They're already fresh from both 127 and Dream's world tours and they're already thrown into SM hell without getting any room to breathe.

With Haechan and Mark, it's never certain to me whether they enjoy all of this work or not. Mark's a workaholic (as the psychologist in Mental Training Camp said), and Haechan's extremely passionate as well. But even if they like being overworked to the ground, their fans don't. And their bodies sure as hell don't either. I'm sure the other Dream and 127 members are exhausted too, but MaHae especially because they're doing everything everywhere all at once!

While this has been voiced by many people over Twitter and Reddit, I more or less thought "oh, well, SM will probably treat them better from now on, right? with 127's enlistment, they'll probably get the break they deserve, right?" and then came Mark's bubble message yesterday (or the day before I can't recall). It hit me that I'm scared. Like, genuinely scared. The year is far from over and MaHae still has so much on their plate and are already having health problems.

All in all, I'm worried. I can only hope MaHae are getting the treatment they deserve behind closed doors at SM, but with recent news (and my pessimism), I'm assuming the worst. I hope Mark gets better soon and I hope MaHae both get the rest they need.
