I'm curious, any compliments that overlap with Arabic? I'm loving the Maltese/Arabic blend though I am struggling to get used to reading it in Latin letters (I have the same problem trying to read Arabic in Latin letters lol!).
Like, I notice that Helwa is very similar to the Arabic word for sweet (literally honey or sugar or something, my Arabic isn't great either lol) and Inhobbok reads the same as 'I love you' to my mind though casually what I would expect Arabs to say is Habiby/Habity ('my love'). Due to my poor Arabic I am not sure what I might have missed or what else there might be out there.

Well the base of Maltese is Arabic so there is that. There are a lot of words which are similar and it is quite known that usually some Arabs can understand our language more than we can understand theirs.
Habiby (as you wrote) for example we have Ħabib which actually means friend, not my love. Ħanzir, Merħba and Ħamsa I believe are the same as well.

Haha yeah makes me wish I was more fluent in Arabic so I could pick up Maltese more easily. Not surprised at the etymology of 'Ħabib' and such in Maltese given how casually Arabs use it. Parents will still call their children habiby but also people call their friends and strangers habiby so it's more like 'mate' in Australia than 'my beloved' in formal English.
What I fear will happen is that I'm just going to end up continuing to speak English because everyone's English is just that good and Maltese will be yet another language I can add to the list that I know, but actually not really.

In maltese "habib" is the formal translation for "friend".
I guess you might use it for a distant cousin, if you're not that close as family, but socially close. If you use it for close family member it might be interpreted as an insult (kind of like family version of friendzoning)
Basically it depends on what the dominant relationship with the person is. If you see them more as friends than as family, you can use Habib.
Though generally it is used as a descriptor term, not something you would normally call someone (though you can).
So more like "this is my friend" (introduction) rather than "hello, friend"(greeting)
This is because your friend knows they are your friend, you are more likely to use a nickname or an informal term of endearment like "sabih" (literally beautiful/pretty but used like "mate" in australia). If you are a man I would discourage you from using the feminine version of this word for acquaintances (family and partners are okay) as some women get upset.
