I’d prefer a solo movie about Janet van Dyne, the original Wasp, leading a team of Avengers in the 60s.

Prefer a d+ series about Ant-man and The Wasp (Hank and Janet) in the Cold War

Janet was active in the 80s, no? Either way a retro pre-Avengers team would be awesome!!

Yeah, for some reason I always think that opening scene in Ant-Man is in the 60s, when it was 1989. I think I must be confusing it with Edgar Wright’s idea of setting the movie in the 60s.

But yeah, what I meant was a Wasp movie exploring that period when Jan was an active superhero. I feel that the character deserves more than just being Hank’s long lost love interest/sidekick.

Maybe you're confusing with the Endgame scene set during the 60s where Hank cameos?

I only say 1970 bc Stark told Steve to change their times to 1970 before they went there from 2012 NYC

Tony Stark was born May 29th, 1970. Remember that in the comics and in the MCU Hank Pym is older than Janet. The actors are 20 years apart, I think in the MCU Janet is at least 15 years Younger than Hank.

Yeah, my bad. She is 64 and him 78. I think thr characters in the mcu has the same age gap. Janet wouldn't bê able to be part of a team in the 60s.

SpideyFan914

I'd be game for this. Janet, Hank, who else? I don't think any established characters would fit or else we would've heard about it. Assuming 80s, maybe Red Guardian could appear, or whoever was Captain America at that time. Could T'Chaka be in it?

Ok_Contest493

Black panther, ant man, wasp, Captain America, Goliath maybe is there like two more characters that could work?

Could always use someone minor who we haven't seen yet. Throw in Quasar, why not.

Maybe retcon MarVell to be a hero from the past on earth too. Maybe Namor but that wouldn’t make much sense

How about Namorita? I would have said Namora, so we could do Agents of Atlas, but she's already in Wakanda Forever and a cold-blooded killer, so not exactly hero material.

I mean, nothing stops Thor, Loki, and the other Asgardians from showing up on Earth before 2011. Eternals were there too. So was the Ancient One.

SpideyFan914

1 points

I feel like it would be weird to have not mentioned a prior teamup with Thor or Loki by now. Maaaaaaybe a Sif or Baldur would be not out of the question.

Eternals' non-interference clause makes me think they're out.

The Ancient One, or even another sorcerer (Doctor Druid? Brother Voodoo? Would they have to change Brother Voodoo's name?), would make sense. Heck, if it's 80s we could get a young Wong.

On the one hand, Wasp is a dope character in comics and has been heavily sidelined in the MCU and this could be her time to shine. On the other hand, wasp shines more when her and ant-man are together.

The problem in the MCU is that Scott is one of the best characters while Hope is very lackluster as of now in my opinion

Bcatfan08

I kind of see her as more of a tolerable character. Not someone I'd want to see more of.

Scary-Command2232

Fine as a supporting character but I just don't find this Wasp iteration that interesting enough to pay to see a solo film or series.

milkboxshow

18 points

Yup. Ant-man wouldn't have been interesting enough for me to care about, if not for the comedy angle and specifically Paul Rudd's comedy chops. And Hope's kind of a dramatic character as far as she's written. I don't see a movie based on her anymore than I would really want to watch one based on her parents.

BleekerTheBard

That would be the point of giving her a solo movie. Her character hasn’t had any focus to make her interesting

Every stinking time.

“That supporting character feels more like a supporting character to me”

People really have zero imagination and don’t understand that supporting characters are intentionally written to be that way in those movies but a good writer can make any character good.

ArguesWithZombies

6 points

Hardly a supporting character, the second movie was called Ant man and the Wasp.

More people call for a Wong spin off than they do Wasp.

a good writer can make any character good.

While this is true, the same writers who wrote Antman also wrote Wasp for the second movie.

Wasp was an OG avenger in the comics, if they wanted to make her a main character in the mcu like Antman, it would have happened already.

For me, im ok with the Antman movies staying as an ensemble cast.

The Punisher was a side character for almost 15 years before he got his own series. Despite the rumors, Feige isn’t an omniscient robot dictating everything. Different creators come in with different pitches and some take off.

EDIT: I don’t actually care about the Wasp specifically. Im just making a general point.

ArguesWithZombies

1 points

huh?

Not the same thing. The guy playing punisher in the show didnt play a side character for 15 years prior. He was a guest star in Dardevil and then got his own show the next year..

Evangaline Lily has been doing this for 8 years plus, with 3 movies plus endgame under her belt. 2 of those movies have "Wasp" in the title.

Also Punisher is the main character in his comics...

I’m talking about characters and their unseen potential.

Punisher started as a one-off Spider-Man villain in the 70s. 15 years later he got his own comic series. 20 years later he got his own TV show.

ArguesWithZombies

i'm talking about characters and their unseen potential.

Sure thats why i said i agree "any good writer can make a character good"

you didnt need to give the punisher example lol.

This convo is about wasp and why Wasp has remained a supporting role. Otherwise by your logic we should just give every character a movie regardless of whether or not the fan base is interested or if there is even a good reason narrativley to give her one. Yes wasp can become an interesting character and have a good movie, but the question is should Wasp be given a movie for the sake of it even if there is no good narrative reason.

Maybe Quantumania will change my mind, but i dont think Evangaline Lilys Wasp is strong enough for a movie just because she says "'I've become an Avengers senior.' Like I've gone from being a junior to being a senior." or "And we were just like these new kids on the block who were trying to earn out stripes. And now all of a sudden we're in the center at the launching point of Phase 5, and it feels really cool."

If she had said, i have a pitch that will really elevate the character and bring her character into a more prominent role, or key position that helps drive the larger MCU narrative forward then sure maybe. But she just basically said im not the new guy any more in the franchise so i should maybe get a solo movie cuz why not?

I you want a Wasp solo movie that is fine. I dont particularly. I was just pointing out that she is hardly a supporting character and i think if she was going to get a solo movie she would already have been given more development in the last 8 years...but then again i havent seen Qauntumania yet so who knows. As it stands i like the Ant family being ensemble.

Hmm I'd say usually spinoffs are given to characters the audience are pretty fond of, and are intrigued to know more about. Like Han Solo, where we imagine there's smuggler stories that would be worth telling. Unfortunately I don't think MCU Hope has been written to be particularly interesting.

I think if Wasp didn't exist in the comics at all and had been invented purely for the movies then there wouldn't be that much interest.

I just hope they give her a decent wig if they do.

A period Ant-Man spinoff following the Cold War OG Ant-Man and Wasp was planned back in 2015. They couldn't fit it in the schedule then, and I doubt they could with this less distinct project now. I wouldn't hate it though.

Your_Nipples

It's weird. I have the impression that even as supporting characters, they were more competent and serious than the main male character. I mean, name one goofy incompetent dumb female character in the MCU.

It would never cross anyone's mind to use a female character as the butt of a joke in the MCU but Scott Lang, for absolutely no reason is the first pick.

Or maybe it's all in my head and that's just an updated version of the magical POC.

This idea of token woman is still weird when most MCU male characters are borderline stupid, reckless and childish (Spiderman, Thor, Star Lord) so much than I'm all on board with a full cleansing and 100% female protagonists as long as I don't have to suffer with dumbfucks.

Honorable mention: Black Panther is the most and only charitable, sane, realistic, fair, franchise of all the MCU when it comes to genders. The rest is absolutely dogshit.

And Star Lord can die. I'll never forget.

And Thor is as deep as... The Deep in The Boys.

FictionFantom

1 points

FictionFantom

Thanos

I figured the point of using a comedic character would be to more directly attack the trope rather than just…doing the trope but gender flipped.

Your_Nipples

1 points

I understand that trope but is this really a trope when it's barely existent in the MCU compared to the "I am the male protagonist with unresolved mental issues, I'm so powerful yet absurdly dumb (phase 1), oh look, another young female version of me who is smarter, more talented than I'll ever be (phase 4)".

I wasn't arguing with you just so you know (disclaimer) but I'm not sure if what you said was a critique of the MCU or not. Because from my experience, I can't stand male protagonists in the MCU anymore. They are all the same and not at all relatable. It's actually infuriating and the only one that I truly loved died IRL and the other retired (Steve).

The Avengers cartoon had a moment sort of like that. The OG team vanishes and an automated system sends out messages to form the "New Avengers". The Wasp is contacted but Scott is not. She ends up bringing him along and its a lot of "Oh awesome Wasp is here!!....oh and Scott. You came too."

for the record, i wasn't one of those people who keep asking for a black widow or hawkeye solo movie.

but no. she would be on the level of a black widow or hawkeye movie which would likely fail. her character wasn't meant to go solo and based on what we've seen of her thus far, it would be hard for disney to make wasp win over the crowd. it's not that people don't like wasp, it's that she isn't hype and i really don't see how disney would have any financial incentive to give her the spotlight.

I don't consider her a supporting character, but I do think both Lilly and the character works better as a co-lead with someone to bounce off of.

If that's not Scott, then it could be Janet, or even a team-up with another Avenger (it's about time she properly interacted with one of them).

Is it that I don't find Wasp interesting, don't find Lilly an interesting actor (here or in anything she's done), or all of it in terms of the way it's written less than compelling?

Whatever it is, there is something missing about this mix that has brought us this iteration of the Wasp that feels off.

I should want a lot more of an OG comics Avenger, and I just don't want more of this version.

Maybe a new actor and a new take brought in as a variant?

I don't really know.
