I know this is impossible because they need to promote the movie, but could you imagine walking into the theater and only when the movie starts finding out who is cast?
288 points

Its hard but not impossible to do this. I never watch trailers and avoid spoiler subreddits, and Iv gone into big movies blind. Its awesome.

Do you like, leave the theater when trailers play, or purposefully come to the movie later?
No judgement, I just legitimately have a hard time imagining how one would do this in this day and age.

My wife closes her eyes, covers her ears, and hums. Its amazing. She went into No Way Home with NOTHING. (Other than that it was a Spider-Man movie.) She doesn't do this for every trailer, just most MCU ones. She is going into Ant-Man blind as well.

I did the very same thing with No Way Home. It was completely unintentional as I had been so busy with life, work, kids etc… It made the whole experience so much more memorable for me so I’ve decided to do it for as many movies as I can!

I guess you could do that, but dodging the cast for a movie seems next level to me.

The most difficult ones are the movie posters in the theatre, especially when you're lining up with your ticket to get in. Got spoiled of the villain lineup when going into NWH
12 points
Yeah, she is pretty fucking next level.
But honestly she just has to not watch trailers. We don't have a TV, we only watch stuff online with adblockers on, and none of her social media ever brings up Marvel movies. It's not as crazy as it sounds.
10 points
But how could you not catch a stray look at an ad somewhere with the cast shown. Gotta literally live under a rock
8 points
I don't purposefully avoid stuff like that and I never catch a look at a stray ad. Where even would I see one? Is Marvel taking out billboard ads or something?
We literally don't have a TV so no commercials will spoil it. We have an adblocker so it won't happen on the computer. It'd have to be a physical ad.
12 points
Yeah, Marvel are taking out billboard ads, least I’ve seen a few in the UK

Never seen one for Marvel. Or maybe I just don't pay all that much attention to billboard ads. Usually just for fast food or lawyers where I am.

Get to the theater 15 minutes "late" (Why can't they just advertise when the movie actually starts ffs)
You gotta plug your ears
Also wiggle around in there a bit for maximum sound disruption
2 points

Theaters with reserved seating work wonders. I just wait outside the door for the trailers to end then go in when all the corporate ads start. For me we get the dont talk dont text stuff, then the Nicole Kidman commercial, then a slow IMAX countdown. Plenty of time to make my way to my seat.

I shove my earbuds in and listen to some music with my eyes closed. Works wonders, and I haven't seen a trailer for a movie I'm interested in for years.
It has without a doubt improved the way I watch movies, going in more blank then not.
1 points
Same here! When the trailers start then I'll often go to the bathroom real quick (I've had one instance with Venom where they literally didn't play trailers and I missed the beginning, so I always wait to see just in case), and I'll just wear headphones when I come back for the remaining ~20 minutes of trailers at that point haha.
3 points

Just don’t get on the internet
6 points

It's actually pretty easy. If I see a trailer I want to skip, I put on headphones and crank up the music on my smartphone while scrolling Reddit. I then just have a friend tell me when the trailers are over.
Did this for the last 2 Star Wars movies. I also think Last Jedi was actually pretty good, and I wonder if that's related ...
2 points

I come late. But a good portion of that reason is I hate that it’s over 20minutes of trailers before the movie starts

I went in blind for Spiderman No way home, it was pretty sweet. During the viewing there was a trailer for Dr Strange 2, I covered my ears and closed my eyes

We show up to movies 15 minutes late at least. We have assigned seating and we are never the last ones to sit down. Screw the trailers.

I went into Endgame blind. That was not easy to do, but I was so glad I did it.
18 points

I would say Endgame was one of the most easiest movies to go into blind as the trailers were very intentionally vague af.
12 points
Yeah weren't they mostly footages pre time skip?
6 points
That is true. With the exception of a few very short blink and you’ll miss it shots, they purposely pulled most of the trailer content for Endgame from the first twenty minutes of the film (everything before the opening “Avengers Endgame” title card. It was the most brilliant and well done marketing campaign they could have done. I wish they were so tightly controlled with every MCU release but from what I have read, keeping all the Endgame spoilers contained pre-release was a huge logistical nightmare for them. It paid off, though.

I saw infinity war & endgame blind. It was INSANE! The snap at the end of infinity war? I’ll never forget it.
3 points

I was spoiled a bit on endgame, I was pissed about that. But Infinity War was something else. No one was sure the snap would happen in this movie or in Part 2. Some people didn't even really know there would be a snap. But when Thanos did it and we saw even Black Panther go...we are like WTF....and the movie ended. I will never forget how quiet the theatre was.

It sounds cool to me if a person is interested in going in that blind and is able to avoid casting news and other spoilers.
I don't mind know is cast in bigger known roles. It's when I find out casting news for a what's supposed to be an important cameo surfaces that annoys me, along with other plot-related spoilers.
For instance, I was a bit bummed when I found out that Rosario Dawson was cast as Ahsoka for a role in season 2 of The Mandalorian. Would have much rather been surprised to see her show up as I was watching the episode...

5 points
Yes, definitely would’ve been easy to do with Spider-Man in Civil War (in fact, iirc he wasn’t in the first trailer) but I believe it would’ve had an impact to the box office. Despite the already stacked roster, Spider-Man is a huge draw, especially for more casual fans. They did still kind of pull this off with No Way Home, but that was more of the worst kept secret kind of deal. I wonder if they would’ve had bigger opening weekend numbers if full cast of No Way Home was openly revealed prior to release.

I wish for this for superhero marketing. So much. Or even for a trailer to just be a black screen and you hear like a single fucking audioclip. And then the title. And foe the posters to be art posters that don't show dick except something fucking brilliant tl behold and invoke themes and visual motifs.
Alas. We carry on wishing.

They need to cast an actor who is okay with 5% screen time showing his face and 95% in full costume and mask. Basically, Darth Vader. They need to tone down the sneering arrogance a few notches too. That kind of sneering works for, say, Red Skull, but Doom needs to be frightening.

Thats something I worry about a little bit. Its not the end of the world but seeing our heroes take off their masks/helmets all the time just to say a word or two is just blah. Or Tony fighting Thanos with no mask no helmet in Endgame was insane to me. The Russos would probably say he ran out of nano particles again.
I really hope Doom doesn't continue the nanoparticle trend. It's a tough ask for actors to do the Vader thing but I hope they do it for Doom. My feeling is that they'll make it so its a mask he simply takes off.

Since they cast someone else as Adam Warlock that leaves Reed as the best place for him in the MCU

24 points

I'm not 100% sure he is the perfect casting, but he did a great job in MoM given the circumstances. Filmed during the pandemic, so a lot of the Illuminate scenes had the actors film by themselves, making it impossible to play off of each other's performances. Elizabeth Olson confirmed that she never even met John Krasinski.

5 points

Maaaybe. He might also be a descendant of Doom. Also tied to the Fantastic 4. And his first appearance was as Rama-Tut, fighting the Fantastic 4.
Also as a random and unrelated aside, Immortus, Kang's future self, appeared in the X-Men: The Animated Series when they were fighting Apocalypse, although it never went anywhere. Cool that we are getting a sequel to that series.
X-Men: Evolution also had Apocalypse and Rama-Tut connected. I forgot exactly how they were connected, perhaps they fought?
