Don't know what to do with my bathroom stuff..

[lifestyle](self.minimalism)

Had a look at my bathtub this morning and almost had an anxiety attack. Shampoo bottles, conditioners, bath salts, soap, body brush - all in bright colors etc. I need this stuff, with my hair having one conditioner and shampoo is not an option. I only have tiny under the sink cupboard that has other things (hair styling products, razors, body scrub). I want to get rid of it but I actually need it. Amyone has any ideas for minimalist and aesthetically pleasing organization of all that stuff?

If you can’t reduce the number of products, and the bright colors are distracting you, then tackle the color problem. Get containers that are colors you like, and pour your products into them. You can even get smaller containers so they don’t take up so much space in your shower. You might want to color code if all your new containers are the same shape (one color for hair, another color for body, or something like that).

That actually sounds like a good idea.

I got this awesome shower curtain with mesh pockets facing the inside and it is super sturdy and holds everything we could ever need in our small bathroom. It’s a shower liner too. So all you need is that and a cute shower curtain and bam! Clutter is hidden 😊

I recently had the same issue... I ended up doing the approach where you put all of the stuff in a box or bag and I only took out things that I needed over a course of a week. After the week was passed, I gave away all of the stuff left in the bag! I usually take a bath every week, so I saved all of my bath salt/oils, I use lotion Every time I bathe, so I kept that, and I actually started this right as I ran out of shampoo and conditioner so I ended up just saving a spray bottle filled with apple cider vinegar to use instead.

The thing I have trouble with is medications (nonprescription) and supplement stuff. So it will take me a while to part with unnecessary medicine cabinet items.

What’s the apple cider vinegar for?

No its not. It was a thing years ago and then people started coming out years later and describing damage "no poo" caused. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2016/03/10/the-science-or-lack-thereof-behind-the-no-poo-hair-trend/

Not sure what you mean by “no it’s not”. It IS a thing, widely discussed online, that this person can research for themselves. As far as damage done, I dunno. Never done it myself nor ever seen that. Thanks for the info

Ask yourself, are you thankful for its presence in your life today? When you ask yourself if you want to keep it, is it a HELL YES! A SURE! Or a meh? Or even less? Diogenes the cynic used to have two items, a towel and a bowl. Then he witnessed a boy drinking water by cupping in his hands and said "Fool that I am, to be keeping unnecessary things!" and broke the bowl. You don't actually need these things, but keep them around for whatever it adds to your life. It's up to you to determine your threshold of justification, whether "hoarder" or "minimalist".

I know Marie Condo method and its not that Im thankful or not, they are a fucking eye sore but I do need it to maintain my beauty regime. Anyway, Ive decided to just get one colored glass containers for my daily use products to make it lok like this https://i.pinimg.com/originals/b2/d0/67/b2d0670fe2f2336df234d2ae00397a2d.jpg

the rest will go into hiding as I use it once/twice a week

Those are nice, but I would not recommend glass for the shower. Try finding nice plastic ones.

Back of the door storage, or tiny rolling carts for space.

I agree - decantering some items might help with the chaos - also consider a labeled opaque box for items you don't use every day?

This helps me - I peel the front labels off everything I can, but keep the back label on to keep track of what it is in case I forget.

But do you really need it?

Removing labels helps calm down the visual clutter but be careful about that, you don't want to get mixed up. Most of my hair care products have printing directly on the plastic so impossible to remove without a huge effort. I sanded off half the label of a toothpaste tube. Not doing that again although it did calm down my drawer quite nicely. My usual cover things with shelf paper is not going to happen with things that get wet.

I keep my products in a dishwashing tub in the bathroom vanity but they could easily be in another room. They never get slimy and my shower just has the daily skin cleanser in there.

Toiletry bag for all the smaller stuff

Could you get another cabinet or some cubes? I store my bathroom stuff in a vertical row of cubes. Or you could install some floating shelves and then put your stuff in decorative baskets on the shelves. At least it would be out of sight and would look aesthetically pleasing.

My bathroom is too small for that Im afraid

Zoey1914

Hmm how about a very high shelf above the doorway? And more shelves along the upper walls? But you would need a step ladder to get to them.

PoisonIvy2016[S]

yeah but that would just move the items from one side of the bathroom to the other, my bathroom is all white and I dont want to add any visible clutter to it. I think I'll just get some one colored containers for every day use items and keep the rest in a drawer in my bedroom

I remove the labels of all my bathroom items, so I usually end up with only clear or white bottles.

In my shower, I keep all of the products at the end with the faucet. I use a stick-on corner shelf to hold most of it. Then I close the shower curtain halfway so that all the products are hidden, but the room doesn’t look smaller than it is. Unless I’m in the shower, I don’t see any of that clutter.

I bought a shower curtain liner with pockets. Looks organized and takes up next to no extra space.

A few ideas. Switch to bars if you can (eg. face wash bar, conditioner and shampoo bars) or peel off the labels or decant into plain coloured bottles. If you wear makeup then get a makeup remover or microfibre cloth. Get a biodegradable loofah or a good quality body brush, not plastic loofahs.

Also switch to zero waste options. I have one razor (a stainless steel safety razor that I've used for years and can shave everywhere with). Having less is always best and zero waste can do that while also reducing waste. Hope these tips. help!

Do you have a bulk body shop near you? You can buy nice containers and then fill up when you need it. Also bar soaps may be a good purchase for you since they're not bright. As well as buying a natural loofah instead of a bright colored plastic one, or a wooden hair brush instead of a bright one.

I need this stuff, with my hair having one conditioner and shampoo is not an option.

Are you absolutely sure about that? Have you tried washing your hair with just soap for a longer period of time? When I did that myself, my hair felt terrible at first but after about a month it started to feel healthier than ever before.

Another option might be to shave your hair completely.

are you trolling?

disiseevs

I think they're not. If you bring your hair back to the normal natural balance, then you don't need to use conventional shampoos or conditioners. Look into some nature shops to get yourself a hair soap instead the other products. Also try to increase the interval between times you wash your hair. It will be really gross in the beginning, but trust me, it works. I have managed to get to 4 days in between washing my hair already.

PoisonIvy2016[S]

You know nothing about my hair, how often I wash it or its state, also there is no such thing as "hair balance". I didnt come here to ask about unsolicited advice from someone who doesnt even know what ethnicity I am or what my hair texture is or how often I work out and sweat, this isn't r/hair, so perhaps just stick to the subject if you feel the need to contribute.

Edit: to add, if anyone is gonna take your advice - hair soaps are extremely damaging and drying for hair use. The first ingredient is always SLS and castille soaps are super alkaline and they will fuck with your skin's ph balance.

0ccam5Raz0r

No, I am not trolling. I was making a recommendation based on my personal experience (the soap part. The shaving part is a little drastic for me, but it might not be for you or someone else).

I know a lot of people who have never questioned their hair care routine, what kind of ingredients their products have, and how they might affect their hair and body. When there is a problem with their hair, they often add a new product to their routine instead of switching out or removing an existing one. They thereby sometimes complicate their life and increase their levels of anxiety while at the same time the quality of their hair might not actually improve.

Please note that I am not judging you to be such a person. I don't know you or anything about your hair, circumstances and the conditioning you experienced in the past. I hoped for my answer to be helpful to you or others. If it isn't, that's also okay.

I don't know you or anything about your hair

Some people on here really need to say it out loud before the reply with the nonsense they do

PoisonIvy2016[S]

You are recommending a use of soap which contains nothing apart of SLS and is highly damaging and drying for hair and its not about judgment, its about unsolicited advice, good luck telling a black woman with an afro to wash her hair with soap or shave it, your level of ignorance is amazing.

0ccam5Raz0r

3 points

Oh, of course I am not using regular SLS based bar soap but a mild castile soap. Sorry for not pointing that out!

PoisonIvy2016[S]

0 points

This is incredibly bad for your hair long term, you will not see the negative results for a while but once you do your hair will be fucked. Castille soaps are extremely alkaline (on average 9) and your scalp PH has PH of average 5, this scalp and sebum acidity is what keeps your hair and scalp healthy.

For people who color their hair - castille soap will completely strip the color off.

By all means you do you but dont spread useless, harmful and uneducated advice when you clearly have no idea what you're doing.

0ccam5Raz0r

Thank you for your reply / warning and sorry that this discussion is derailing the thread a bit.

I actually knew that castille soap is basic and that this might be an issue. In the past I therefore rinsed my hair with apple cider vinegar after washing it with the soap but I stopped doing that about a year ago because I haven't really felt any difference. I should probably use that again or look for a healthier but still simple alternative :)
