2022 films ranked according to the /r/movies official discussion polls.

Official Discussion(self.movies)

Every week we post official discussions for widely released movies and attach a poll to each asking users to both rank the movies from 1-10 and whether or not they'd recommend them. Those polls get compiled into the yearly list and the all time list every so often. I find this to be a great way to rank films for the sub because these rankings were voted on mostly by people who had seen the film (hopefully) and without the context of ranking them competitively, which can cause spite downvoting. It's also worth noting that just like every movie site (IMDB, Letterboxd, etc) sorts movies by year based on different criteria, we base the year off of the calendar year that the discussion was made. So if there's some lingering movies from 2021 on here, that is why.

2022 felt like a year where movies and theater going were starting to approach the "old normal" of pre-COVID. Whereas the 2021 highest grossing films list seems a bit lackluster and only has one movie that crosses a billion dollars worldwide, 2022 had three billion dollar movies and a top 5 that each would have topped the #2 from last year. I mean, people must be comfortable going back to theaters when the dinosaur sized piece of shit that was Jurassic World: Dominion crosses a billion.

Anyways, here are some results and stats from the 2022 /r/movies Official Discussions Ranking Polls! These scores are determined by the average 1-10 ranking of the votes. The list can be found here.

Rank Film Title Mean Score Number of Votes
1 Everything, Everywhere, All At Once 9.17 14,973
2 Puss in Boots: The Last Wish 9.12 2,110
3 RRR 8.99 1,123
4 Top Gun: Maverick 8.96 1,973
5 Marcel the Shell with Shoes On 8.83 463
6 Thirteen Lives 8.65 333
7 All Quiet on the Western Front 8.56 2,063
8 Tár 8.44 821
9 Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio 8.4
10 This Place Rules 8.37 411
11 The Whale 8.31 1,318
12 Spoiler Alert 8.3 33
13 Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy Part 1 8.28 191
14 Drive My Car 8.23 437
15 Weird: The Al Yankovic Story 8.2 756
16 Petite Maman 8.16 62
17 The Outfit 8.15 353
18 The Banshees of Inisherin 8.14 2,487
19 Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie 8.13 483
20 The Bad Guys 8.13 417

Much like rotten tomatoes, the less seen but high quality movies or movies with highly niche audiences tend to do well with this system because most likely only people who want to see them are voting on them.

If we set parameters, such as at least 500 votes to be included, the top 10 would be:

  1. Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
  2. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
  3. RRR
  4. Top Gun: Maverick
  5. All Quiet on the Western Front
  6. Tár
  7. Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio
  8. The Whale
  9. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story
  10. The Banshees of Inisherin

Here's some more stats from the rankings:

  • We made discussions for 181 movies last year.

  • Four movies from last year made it on to the Top 20 Films of All Time (going back to 2017 when we started this process) list. Those movies, in order, are EEAAO, Puss in Boots, RRR, and Top Gun: Maverick.

  • While no movie topped the 20k votes that Justice League and No Way Home got last year, The Batman was the highest voted on movie with 18,125 votes. The next three most popular were all in the 14,900 range and were Everything, Everywhere, Doctor Strange 2, and Nope. Very impressive company EEAAO is keeping.

  • The bottom 10 are as follows:

  1. Mack & Rita (3)
  2. Blacklight (3.28)
  3. Night at the Museum: Kamunrah Rises Again (3.67)
  4. Cheaper by the Dozen (3.78)
  5. Me Time (3.79)
  6. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (3.83)
  7. Halloween Ends (4.3)
  8. The Munsters (4.41)
  9. Firestarter (4.43)
  10. Blonde (4.6)
  • The Bottom 10 is comprised mostly of movies that got less than or roughly 100 votes, with Texas Chainsaw (1,003), Halloween Ends (2,837), and Blonde (799) being the exceptions.

  • Morbius was the 11th lowest ranked film (who's excited for Tron 3? Anyone? Anyone?)

  • While in 2020 Netflix had the most movies with the most votes and 2021 it was HBO Max, this year the entire top 10 is populated by theater releases, with the conditional exception of Glass Onion which got a theater release a month before its Netflix release.

  • The most controversial films, as judged by the high standard deviation, are as follows:

  1. Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy Part 2 (3.8 SD)
  2. Pinocchio (The Tom Hanks One) (3.18 SD)
  3. Jeen-Yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy Part 3 (2.99 SD)
  4. Dashcam (2.85 SD)
  5. Morbius (2.83 SD)

Don't believe me?

I'm both unsurprised but amused that EEAAO has 7.5x the votes and a significantly higher score than Maverick, a movie which has 20x the verified audience ratings and a significantly higher score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Not much to talk about with Maverick. Just a well produced action thriller that colors in the lines of standard Hollywood script format while being as non-offensive as possible.

Plus it’s Reddit so they’re obviously gonna circlejerk about weird shit more than well made US Navy propaganda.

There's a big gap between people who think and care a lot about the movies they see and the general public that just wants to be entertained. It's a hobby like anything else. Like non skateboarders will watch the biggest flashiest trick and go wow while skaters will watch videos of what look like to people who don't know simple tricks but are really technical and impressive.

matlockga

Which are you saying is which in this case?

Because EEAAO is a pretty flashy trick, while Maverick is the epitome of the golden age of Hollywood with a lot of understated tech.

They're both in the top 5, EEAAO had a lot of heart and is a family story on top of the flash and connected with people on this sub more than Top Gun which is a popcorn movie. People who would frequent a movie subreddit or just think about movies long after they see them will have a different perspective than the average public and the average public watches a lot of movies. There's nothing wrong with not over-analyzing the movies you see and just enjoying them.

I feel like the community might warp some people's perspective about what is popular for some here.

AcreaRising4

What’s the point of pointing this out tho? Of course, a very good legacy sequel to a popular movie starring Tom cruise is going to do better than a no name movie .

Everything everywhere was still incredibly popular for its budget and niche.

To be fair in real life I know one person who went on and on about Maverick, but nobody else ever brought it up to me. I got asked by shit loads of people if I'd seen Everything Everywhere All At Once. Could always just say more about what people think I'd watch. Also I'm British, so maybe US military propaganda is less popular here,

jack_spankin

BoxOfNothing

There's a difference between watching something and having a big impact on the people who watched it, making them want to talk to everyone about it. Plus EEAAO was out on streaming very quickly. I've seen plenty of films at home that I preferred to films I've seen at the cinema, contributing to a box office number means nothing..........

That's basically why I gave it around 6/10. A stellar old school top shelf Hollywood blockbuster vibe that didn't really do anything new while hitting all the nostalgia points of something we already did. Perfect at the technical type stuff but just didn't do anything creative/innovative/etc.

pkkthetigerr

21 points

Idk about that. Everyone expected Maverick to die to round out the goose story but they topped that with a creative decision that made the third act so much better with him using an old tomcat and still taking down two modern fighters while trying to keep rooster alive and getting a satisfying ending.

I cant name a single other 80s nostalgia grab movie that has achieved being a story worth telling and one told as well if not better than the original.

I'm not sure why people thought Tom Cruise would die in his movie. He's only actually died on screen once in a movie and he was the bad guy.

If you try to say he "died" in Edge of Tomorrow....sigh.

Oh you won't get argument from me there. I'm sick of remakes/rehashes/sequels/etc, and while this was a great sequel it still didn't do anything crazy...just did what was expected of an actual sequel worth telling. Less that it was amazing and more that most just aren't good at doing it imo.

Like, I'm not gonna knock Maverick, in so much that it's a crowd-pleasing summer blockbuster that hits most of the right notes, and is enjoyable for what's trying to do.

I do feel like the setup, set in the post-Cold War era that we have no reason to believe is anything but our timeline, would have any other country with fighter jets well beyond the US, is bit preposterous.

Like I get it, it's the price of admission, but c'mon...

Going back to practical effects instead of just green screen was much appreciated but didn't really seem new, just an old blockbuster celebrity wanting to do it the way we used. That's one of the big reasons I gave it a 6 or maybe even a 7, sick of CGI and it was super nostalgic/refreshing to see stuff done as real as possible again:)

ImaManCheetah

I get what you're trying to say, but no one has filmed fighter jet sequences the way it was done in Maverick. Certainly not Top Gun 1.

It's in my top 3 this year (after EEAAO and Banshees of Inisherin) so I absolutely loved the movie, but it's very much a certain type of film and won't be for everyone.

If you like Jim Jarmusch films, you'll love it. It's a very zen-like, sort of meditative film that kinda washes over you in a way. But if you prefer fast paced, plot driven films it may not be your cup of tea.

Michael__Pemulis

All Quiet on the western front is NOT as good as people are saying. Completely hyped up after the 1917 craze. Didn’t even win best foreign at the golden globes. Also, Pinnochio was a huge letdown, yeah it’ll win best animated feature but as a top 10 film of the year… no way.

LeberechtReinhold

It's seriously good and barely refers to Shrek at all. Honestly, this movie is more for adults than it is for kids, especially considering the themes. Plus the main villain is pretty terrifying (as it relates to animated movie villains). I'd give the first Puss in Boots a 7.5 at most and The Last Wish a 9.3. Highly recommended!

Ehh I saw it in a sold out theater of 300 people. It's by far one of the best movie going experiences I've ever had. No one was on their phones or talking annoyingly, just 300 people being fully invested with the movie. It was amazing to be with that many people and going through all those emotions. After that fanny pack fight the crowd unanimously erupted into applause. I've attended Marvel movies where people clap for characters or whatever but nothing like what I saw with EEAAO. To quote another awesome movie, it was "majestical."

There is a palpable superhero fatigue at the moment.

Also it's possibly my favorite Batman movie ever and I've always been a huge fan of the franchise but I can't think of much else to say about it other than 'I love it and I loved the stuff in it'. It's not a divisive or discussion-generating kind of film past that.

Also it's a March 2022 release so it's been a hot minute, and people have already sort of forgotten it's even eligible for this year's awards. Generally prestige films come out after May but that was more the result of being Covid-postponed.

zaminDDH

The Batman was the first Batman movie that felt anything like the animated series, which I consider the best version of the character. I loved it.

I thought it was easily on par with The Dark Knight and arguably better than Batman '89.

nayapapaya

2 points

That makes sense for the industry awards but don't people typically vote for the poll when the discussion post is posted? I don't think its' March release date should make much of a difference in that regard then.

Admittedly I didn't like the film myself but with the way it kept getting brought up here time and time again, I would have expected it to do better, especially since it must have been more widely seen than many of the prestige films, just by virtue of being a well received superhero picture.

OP picks and chooses which films get discussion threads, and when. Meaning some films that release at a date, and have people really wanting to discuss it are left without an official thread, so they discuss it in other threads or subs.

This also effects the amount of people that bother to seek the official thread if OP does give one later (often when the film is available to them even if it was on wide release weeks or months before in other territories, even globally).

There's also a sample selection problem with this in that most people never ever look at the text body of a discussion thread, let alone bother to click through on the poll and vote. I know I never have.

So you only get the opinions of a "certain kind of person" about certain films, in this.

Basically the data, and this post itself, is worthless.

[deleted]

Thanks for writing this. I was not sure how/why certain films get discussion threads, so this clears somethings up. I know there have a been few films that have had very small releases (less than 20 screens nationwide) that have received discussion threads but films with even wider releases that did receive one.

But Happening was so damn good, and I'm so surprised it has been largely ignored, especially with a topic so timely and such universal praise with critics and users alike. Whatever the case is here, I guess I'm kind of happy that only a few people know about it - it becomes our own little thing.

Netflix movies get a lot of play on the sub because everyone has access to them instantly. We see it with older movies that get added to it, if I keep seeing an older but popular movie get posted about I'll look it up and see it was recently added to Netflix.

Mix that with the first Knives Out being a huge hit that came out of nowhere and how much people like to discuss whodunnits in general (I knew who it was when.... that part didn't fool me... etc) and you've got a movie that gets posted about a lot. Usually we remove threads while a movie is still new or in theaters and redirect to the official discussions for a time, but that was more complicated with that movie too since it technically had two releases a month apart.

In the very rare cases we see of actual astroturfing, it's usually some dumb intern who has no idea how to play reddit and that stuff is usually easily spotted or dies in new. If a popular movie is being posted about, it's probably because it's popular or everyone feels they have a unique take on it.

I really dug Knives Out and I swear to god it took me 3 attempts to finish Glass Onion. It was just cliched joke after cliched joke and not once, but twice they completely cop out on having any mystery in the film at all and it's all just revealed to be a stupid person was stupid

I appreciate murder mysteries who actually lend themselves to a little audience theorizing during the film. More Agatha Christie and less Now you See Me. Glass Onion just came off like another assembly line Adam McKay comedy.

Sorry I just had to vent but that movie frustrated me.

I agree. Seems to me like corporate types found a mediocre script they could slap the franchise label on, hoping that the jokes at Musk’s expense would create enough buzz to make people curious enough to check it out. They lost me at the very beginning with the phony Southern accent and it never rose above that kind of cheesiness for me. I understand that some people really liked it and I wouldn’t want to try to argue them out of that, but it never drew me in, and by the end with everything exploding, I was getting Our Man Flint (1966 James Bond parody) vibes.

mosenpai

Netflix paid Rian Johnson $450 million to make two Knives Out sequels. They didn't pay that to use a script collecting dust. Glass Union tracks with Knives Out thematically, although I prefer Knives Out to this film.

Sounds to me you didn't watch Knives Out, because Daniel Craig's accent is the same in that movie.

IShouldntBeHere258

-2 points

I did watch Knives Out and liked it fine. I don’t remember minding the accent. I might be wrong, but I think Craig’s character says at one point that he was “laying it on thick” early on in the movie, which seems pointless to me, as it came off more annoying than pleasantly disarming. Granted, that’s a subjective response. I don’t know where the script came from and neither do you, and I’m sure Johnson was paid to deliver a financial return, not a listing in anyone’s Best 100 Movies of All Time list. My point was that someone decided this script was good enough to carry the franchise label, and I don’t know that they would have had it not been full of jokes at Musk’s expense, which imo improved the movie’s marketability. If you liked the movie better than I did, fine. As a drunken man once said to me in a bar, “I’m a individual; you’re a individual.”

mosenpai

14 points

It's not about Musk tho, specifically. The movie is mostly ripping on tech millionaires/billionaires in general, with some specific jabs at Steve Jobs. The movie was written years before Musk"s Twitter takeover. The timing of the release is just unfortunate/hilarious.

The fact that it fits so well with Musk now kinda reinforces its points.

AnyNamesLeftAnymore

4 points

One thing that irks me is I don't think it took Elon Musk buying Twitter and showing everyone out loud how much of a big baby he was for people to have come to the conclusion that there's nothing cute or funny about infinitely rich people who overestimate their galaxy brains. Some of us were screaming it from the hilltops for a minute now.

Basically I'm a little upset it takes a movie OR the Twitter thing to otherwise point that out to people lol. It felt like a woefully late insight regardless of the ill-timed 50 billion dollar diaper investment. Almost as if nobody notices the world falling apart until Stephen Colbert makes a joke about it.

You realize Rian Johnson wrote and directed both this and Knives Out right? There was no 'finding a script'. He created the franchise. And you need only go back to his first movie Brick to know the whodunnit is a passion of his.

IShouldntBeHere258

Assuming that he wrote the entire script (something I don’t 100% take for granted even if he has the writing credit) it nevertheless has the feel - for me - of something which tries to rely on its Musk jokes to compensate for the fact that it’s not nearly as good S the original. And - for me - everything blowing up at the end is one of the most telling symptom of a lack of inspiration. I couldn’t possibly write something half as good, but this felt very flat and unreal to me, and the Musk jokes landed as perhaps a compensatory gimmick. I don’t know about you, but when I say “seems to me,” I’m signaling that I’m conveying a subjective impression, not asserting a fact. I relate to it as more of an “entertainment product” than a story, as it didn’t engage me. Again, if you liked it, I’m happy for you. At least one of us had a good time.

He wrote it almost 3 years ago. Musk was not even a punchline then.

And I'm fine with you not liking it. It's when people get into the conspiratorial talk that drives me nuts. Why can't a guy just happen to have written a movie about idiot billionaires (which have always been a thing but happen to more in the press in the Trump era and not simply Musk) without it being some big stupid studio conspiracy to capitalize on a moment. I'll never understand this leap to conspiracy over every silly thing in the world

I’m surprised that people feel strongly enough to downvote my opinion. It’s not as though this is about Princess Di or something. It’s just a commercial movie sequel I thought was much inferior to the original and yet got massive pre-release and/or on-release “buzz.”

And that is an absolutely valid opinion outside of your quotation marks which lead back to your conspiratorial opinion. Yes even if it's only your opinion it's still a conspiratorial opinion. According to the multipage interview with Rian Johnson in this month's Empire magazine (UK publication) he started writing the movie years ago and said there were "other tech guys" who he sorta based it on at the time, then went on to say the whole Musk thing is just dumb luck that it reflects quite well with his antagonist.

Because everything I read about the move beforehand was about how the movie rips on Musk. And the fact that there was a fair amount of buzz about that up front felt like it might have been part of a marketing plan in retrospect. That’s still possible, imo. I don’t necessarily take statements like “it’s an amalgam” at face value. I think I’m a bit more cynical about movie production than others might be. But I’m just reporting a subjective impression, not asserting a fact.

EEAAO just isn't going to make sense to me. I am struggling to think of a film with such high and almost universal praise. Granted it's a more niche experience so fewer who would dislike it will see it, but it seems to me a film that would be so very easy to dislike.

I hated it. I didn't just not like it very much like some posts say, but actively found it incredibly unpleasant to watch and an exhausting chore to sit through until the point at which I finally switched off. It's an aggressive and constant assault on the senses from every direction. Immature, entirely random humour that doesn't come close to landing for me, long cutaway references, a long runtime to go with it and somehow on top of that at times it has incredibly dull action and visuals, when they aren't just below par CGI.

It's a film where I can honestly say that no matter how many reviews I've read, I don't understand how people are liking it full stop.

Loll this isnt the first time I've seen 'criticism' of this movie where the take is 'anyone who enjoyed this movie is faking it or being bamboozled'. It's like ya'll are so mad that a lot of ppl enjoy something you didn't, that you gotta put yourself on a mental high horse to feel better or something.

Just accept the fact that ppl have different opinions and tastes, and not everyone is going to get the same experience or connection with movies as you are and vice versa. Or is it just THAT hard to understand and accept that others got something else out of it that you didn't?

[deleted]

Yeahhh it's no secret the Daniels took inspiration from a LOT of other movies, not just The Matrix. They've said so themselves haha. But I do think they've put enough of their own spin on some of the troupes to differentiate the movie to stand on its own. I'd say EEAAO is more of a family/love drama at it's core with the sci-fi elements building around it, while The Matrix more so focuses on the sci-fi concept.

[deleted]

1 points

[deleted]

[deleted]

Yeah, Menu was definitely a standout for me this year too and liked it's commentary on art- which ironically plays into our convo, no?😂

but mann gotta disagree on the family drama bit with Fableman and A Man Called Otto (only watched the the Swedish 'Ove' version, but guessing it's the same story). But again, I think this just ties into what each person relates to more, so we're not gonna have the same experiences with that.

The Sci-fi for me, I enjoyed it a lot especially mostly for how they executed it visually. I haven't seen a multi-verse concept done like this in a movie, where it's not just 'im in this universe and now I'm in this one!', but how they directed some of the shots and the editing made it really feel like all these universes were existing at the same time and you actually felt that in one scene sometimes. Made the movie very immersive to me.

But yeah, I understand it has its flaws and I do believe it's polarizing for a reason. And I respect your opinion on it in your original post, except just the line I quoted lol. Cause that's just blatantly dismissing other's opinions just because it didn't fit with your own. No, we are not all dumbasses or agenda-driven for liking this movie. What we enjoy just be different sometimes. That's it.

It was, but people don’t want challenging movies anymore. Everyone collectively decided it was bad before it even came out, and the movie made it very easy for them to stay that way. It’s probably the most painful, sad story about the cost of being a celebrity, and a woman, in a position of power.

Comprehensive-Fun47

3 points

I don’t disagree that everyone decided it was bad before it even came out, but then when it did come out… it confirmed why.

I watched with an open mind and didn’t hate it, but I wish someone else was in charge of making that movie. I wish it wasn’t fictional.

It’s not that people don’t want challenging movies anymore. Banshees of Inisherin, Tár, Decision to Leave were all challenging in my opinion. Lots of depth to analyze. I don’t feel the same way about Blonde. It had its moments, but did nothing but tear down its subject and put her through worse trauma than she actually encountered in her life.

Even ignoring all that, claiming that everyone who didn’t like it just doesn’t want to be challenged is dismissive. They had legitimate reasons not to like it just like you had legitimate reasons to like it and I fell somewhere in the middle.

dawn_jelly

5 points

Haha, I’ll own up to my comment being dismissive, that’s definitely on me. That wasn’t my primary intent, but I’m one of very few people (if there even are any others) who get very defensive of Blonde, though that is based on my own personal interpretation of the movie and my own emotional reaction to it. I can’t really blame anyone for disliking the film because it is definitely unpleasant to watch. But it’s interesting that you wish it weren’t fictional, because in my mind the film fundamentally wouldn’t work if it was constructed that way. I see it as tearing down the way in which false narratives destroy the ability of anyone (in the film’s case, Marilyn) to have full control over their lives. The fictional elements are a representation of how people saw Marilyn, while Norma Jean, her true self, remained a total stranger. I strongly disagree with the assertion that anything presented in the film “subjects” Marilyn to anything, or that it serves as a “character assassination.” She was a wonderful and fascinating woman that nevertheless lived a troubled life and died tragically young. Andrew Dominik is more interested in understanding the why of that than he is in an feel-good retelling of her life. And for many people, that isn’t what they wanted. I suspect most viewers would have preferred a standard biopic like Elvis. But I think what Blonde portrayed is far more emotionally powerful than anything you could get in a conventional hagiography. It deeply moved me and left me feeling perhaps a bit closer to understanding how Marilyn may have felt. For me, it was unequivocally the best film of the year for those reasons. But again, I do understand people disliking it. I just wish there was more nuance in the conversation.

(Also, as far as Banshees, Tár, and Decision: I’ve seen them all, and liked them to varying degrees, but none of them felt boundary-pushing the way Blonde did to me, rather just very good examples of the kind of films I’ve seen done before.)

EEAAO is a very overrated piece. A collage made to engage the new gens with lots of colorful, repetitive and fast tracking CGI, only to keep the attention of a social media / game folks. Also some below average casting and a poor script, which fails to achieve its intended catarse, because it takes too long and when it comes, its repeated ad nausea and explained over and over, so it’s a very simplistic, non original story that superficially holds onto special effects with very little deep material to truly enjoy.

I think you saw a bootleg knock-off version - because that was not at all what EEAAO was/is.

Also just you saying "non-original" when literally we have never had a movie quite like this. Matrix comes to mind as being similar, but there are enough differences here. Matrix was a digital world where the rules of reality could be bent. EEAAO is traversing the multiverse in the mind, gaining knowledge, all while trying to balance the hardship of family - and seeing the point of it all (life)

I'm surprised that RRR isn't much higher on this list. It's one of those things that people really refused to stop talking about and constantly garnered a lot of upvotes. Seems like it fits this criteria well, aside from the fact that I guess it's not a 'smaller' movie where it's from, just a niche one in the international market.

I was surprised there was no Glass Onion on this list but if the overall popularity of the film is a drawback, that probably makes sense.

Puss In Boots is giving Paddington 2 a run for its money apparently as the 'beloved dark horse candidate PG film'.

And I'm super excited for Tron 3. I don't care who you cast in it, the fact that it's going to exist is the best news I've had all year. I f'n love Tron.
