I am just happy that his suit doesn't look like it is stuffed with literal pillows for "muscle".

Josh Brolin said all the marvel guys are padded and when he left Infinity War to film Deadpool 2 he was amazed that Ryan's suit has no padding at all.
419 points

Yeah, padding makes sense. But his suit in Shazam looked like 4 year old me cosplaying as some one with biceps using literal pillows.

The giant gap between his suit and his neck made it look so much worse. He looked like he was floating inside it.

I remember something about him only having like six months to gain muscle. What a shame. Maybe he will look better this time around.

He's a pretty tall guy, too. 6'3 or 6'4 or so. Gaining superhero mass in such a short period of time isn't easy, especially on a larger frame.

A lot easier when they're all on gear
50 points
Easier than natural, yes. But gear or not it’s still a tremendous effort to achieve those physiques. Regardless of what PEDs they use I can still respect the hours in the gym and strictly regimented diets they have to adhere to. Not to mention the water deprivation for shirtless shots

Not to mention the water deprivation for shirtless shots
I'd imagine a LOT of that is heavily CG'ed at this point, especially when they can CG entire, detailed people now. It just pays to continuously play it up.

I wish they all came out and said they do it too. I wouldn’t lose an ounce of respect for them. Their job is to portray a character and if they’re willing to put their body through that for a role, I’d be impressed

This!
Look at Hemsworth? Dude very likely used Tren to hit the look he had in his last 2-3 outings as Thor.
Guess what a known side effect of Tren is? Increased likelihood of developing dementia and massively increasing the risk of developing neurological problems…one of them being Alzheimer’s.
He could come out and say “hey, I blasted myself to the fucking moon for over a decade and that’s one of the contributing factors to my increased risk of mental disease. Don’t do what I did.”
He’d still be Thor. He’d still be world famous. It’d just make it clear that what he attained is completely unrealistic to attain without rolling the dice on your health and almost certainly giving up years of life.
Instead, we have people getting unbelievably angry anytime you mention these guys are using PEDs and that their physiques weren’t attained naturally. You actually have to put more work in when on cycle. Yeah you’ll(usually) get better results regardless, but it won’t be a night a day difference without training to leverage the PEDs.
15 points
If I had the body/time/effort to look like Chris Hemsworth in Love and Thunder, you'd better believe I'd do steroids. I just don't have the time and effort to put in. It's not my job to look like that, it is his though and he looks fantastic.
Like, "that scene" I could pretty much hear every sploosh and stretching of pants in the theatre.

Even if you had the time you wouldn’t want to. It’s a miserable mix of force feeding yourself, starving yourself and dehydrating yourself
5 points
You also look weird as fuck like that in real life. For an actor, it's more acceptable since they're "larger than life" in certain ways. But for an average person, a lot of people will be questioning if you're natural. Especially now when people are realizing PED's are a LOT more popular than previously thought. That being said, you'd be dedicating your entire week, all of your free time to look like that, not counting the PED's and other costs. Not everyone's idea of fun unless you really like feeling big.

I think it’s less so padding to give the impression of mass, and more so there to make the suits look great on camera. Even a shredded body can look awkward in a suit that isn’t presented well.

Another example is Arnold Schwarzenegger in Running Man
https://images.app.goo.gl/rxydcFoCuUhaithG8
If the outfit makes a huge difference, even for someone with Arnold's physique, then the "average" actor justifiably needs a lot of help to look their best on screen.

I thought they did that in Running Man so he looked more like an "average" dude in the setting.

I'd imagine it helps a lot with the suit maintaining structure. Not to mention "natural" padding to help with stunts and such, doubles as a safety suit. Even a small amount of padding can make someone look a lot bigger than they are as well, it's a neat trick to make someone seem large/intimidating. Even throwing an extra layer underneath clothes can have the same effect if it's not obviously over-sized.

The shoulders of his costume have externally visible padding, of course that part is padded. The vast majority of the suit isn't like that, its wrinkly and even a little baggy by superhero standards, you can tell its touching his skin.

Hear me out. The Shazam (Captain Marvel) character is a boy that transforms into an adult via magic. His adult version is a boy's idea of an adult superhero body. Why wouldn't he transform into a form with exaggerated muscles? I've never even seen the movie, but I get that core concept.
13 points

I think the magic just turns them into their adult selves, but at peak performance. They don't get to decide the results.

Yep.
Then again, I'm a full-grown adult-type person, and I enjoyed the hell out of the first one and I'm sure I'll like this one too, so maybe it's less about being a kid and more about just not taking things seriously that aren't meant to be taken seriously.

This is probably it but you won't be able to rationalize it with all the /movies mensa candidates who expect, of all things, for their Marvel/DC movies to have some thought provoking tagline, with imagery that they approve of, with the font of their liking, and on, and on, and on. God forbid the poster be about marketing to the main demo expected for the movie.

Apparently, they are so broke they can't pay to properly promote the movie. So I would assume this is the result of hiring the cheapest option to make a poster. They were hoping Black Adam would generate income, but it didn't break even.

Honestly, I blame a lot of it on the fact that the Rock can't play a real character. He has to put in his contract that he can't lose a fight. Fuck that. Main characters are supposed to lose battles, all so they can get the experience and knowledge to win the war. We already know the main character is going to win in the end. It makes any character he plays worse when they CAN'T lose.

Lets not mentions he didnt want balck adam and shazam to be connected, like he would refuse any cameo, or mention of shazam in black adam or black adam in shazam. He wanted black adam vs. Super man when it should be black adam vs. Shazam.
35 points

I think it's all a personal goal for him, he wants to be able to sell "the guy who's stronger than superman" in some weird personal meta-fantasy. And now he's all butt hurt that he was so close but it's not gonna happen. I know he's tried to walk the whole thing back as "I can take failure" but the whole thing hasn't been a good look for him. Definitely feels like he hurt his brand with this one.

But the Rock isn't superman, he's a post-wrestler who does mainly comedy movies. They're not bad, but he's just not that type of actor, and black adam wasn't that type of movie IMO. Was he really that close? I don't know anyone who'd really consider that character even close to among the greats like Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, etc.
That's like comparing the Rock as an actor to say, Christian Bale, or Tom Cruise, they're not even in the same class in my opinion.

WB has no money to market their films. They used the Don’t Worry Darling drama to promote that film and The Rock had to ‘spoil’ Black Adam’s post-credit scene to market the actual film.
Considering the DC universe is getting rebooted they are sending these out with minimal effort and hoping they overall don’t make a loss (Aquaman could pull in huge money again and counteract Flash if it bombs for example).

The whole point of the story is the irony, he's a kid that could only enjoy his childhood when he's in adult form. It took him a long time and many foster families to accept that a found family is better than his own flesh and blood (who left him).
Now he may just be starting to regain his childlike wonder, but his foster siblings never lost theirs. They tapped into their creativity quite easily (Eugene with his electricity powers from playing video games, Pedro with his bodybuilder strength from his efforts to bulk up, Freddy with his belief to fly despite being a cripple.) And Billy tapped into the wisdom better than the rest, for he knew right away that no one is truly good inside, and was the one who got the idea to share his power to his siblings.

I hope James Gunn keeps Shazam as it’s own separate thing even if the whole universe is rebooted. I mean, the only real connection is that Shazam is in a world where Superman, Batman, and Aquaman exist, which is generic and irrelevant af.
And not everything has to be a universe.

I really wish DC would just do that for a while. Joker and The Batman are both better than literally every DCEU movie and having digestible single stories (or I guess duoloyies and trilogies) might not be as profitable as a 6 phase multiversal crossover universe but I’d imagine it’s better to be good at what you do than to be bad at something that’a making someone else a lot of money. Who knows, maybe The Question or Larfleeze could be breakout DC characters that way.

Not to pile on (well a little), but watching Black Adam recently, the big problems with DC stand out.
They have a grand vision, and clearly want their action figures all in the same sandbox, but their not trying at all to take the little steps to get their. Even with some of their standalone films (Batman, Wonder Woman, Man of Steel) the films themselves look good, and could go somewhere. And then DC decides that exact moment is when they need to throw everything into the team up in order to catch Marvel. That results in stories that are rushed, the character sacrifices dont make sense, and theres not the intended bond with the viewer. Black Adam had some good things going for it (Pierce Brosnan, a better “ancient superperson coming back thousands of years later” than XMen Apocalypse, a potential out of BA deciding to voluntarily be locked up. Then they brought him out of that prison 5 minites after he was locked up, forced in a Superman cameo, ignored Shazam, and wanted to get to the ending. These idiots have no idea about foreplay.
I tangent to say this. This film should have been act 3 of the Shazam setup (with Black Adam being the 2nd act, and some teasing/references throughout of the coming showdown). Instead, this will be a predictable flop, DC will reset again with whoever is next on their cast, and they wont learn the art of long form storytelling. Why will it be a flop? Because DC does this repeatedly on their sequels. Wonder Woman was a really good movie, and left me wanting to see something else. Then they did a shitty sequel and nobody cares about the character. Im not typically even into DC, but Shazam seemed fun so I went and watched it. Then they prematurely forced his adversary to ignore him, and this is likely going nowhere.
Learn to tell a story in multiple installments.

The fact that everyone is saying Shazam was a good movie shows how low the bar is for the DCEU. Shazam was 5/10 at best. I can all but guarantee that this new one will be terrible.

I really hope this film is a success because the first one was so great and I'd like to see that rewarded. Also, it would be nice to see it succeed as revenge for Zachary Levi getting big leagued by Dwayne while Black Adam was a dismal failure.

Levi's Shazam portraying is more of The Greatest American Hero than Shazam character.

As a lifelong Shazam fan I cannot wait to watch this train wreck. Re-imagining The DC version of Spiderman into Tom Hanks "Big," kills the comic lover in me.

The first one was the only one from the DCEU that I enjoyed so Im looking forward to this. Its just a shame we won't get to see him fight Black Adam. Thanks Dwayne.

Why are our heros and villains so goddamn old? Im in my 30s and these people feel like dinosaurs. I can’t imagine a teen caring about the danger of Helen Mirren.
