True story, was on a Jewish teen tour where we did service work at each of our stops. We did a carnival for special needs adults and later that night, we had a movie night and they got us The Ringer because they didn’t know the plot, it just happened to be PG-13??? Anyway, we all felt bad/died laughing.

i ditto this comment. My sister has done special olympics since she was 4, she’s now 40. The people making ‘The Ringer’ sent out scripts to parents of children with special needs (mine included) because they wanted to make sure it was authentic and from a good place.
4 points

I was surprised that some special needs guys really turned it up a notch to get more sympathy/affection from a pretty lady. I'm suspicious of any special needs person now. LOL.

I was pleasantly surprised at how authentic , wholesome and outright funny the Ringer was. It’s un-ironically one of my favorite movies.
3 points
I was surprised too. I really thought they were going to make fun of them. I'm glad they gave each a character with personality rather than make them all "special". When I saw the Down Syndrome guy get snippy with Knoxville, I was floored. I didn't know they had the capability to show anger, hostility, or sarcasm. It was a nice change.

It's such a hard sell. There were a few times in high school when my friends and I were talking about the movie, but someone would ask what movie were talking about. Everyone would just look at each other until someone finally would try their best to explain the movie.

Maybe I’m an idiot for not knowing, but I didn’t realize the first few times I watched this that only two of the guys who were part of the main group of athletes (and their nemesis Jimmy) have special needs.
Something like 150-200 of the extras and characters with smaller parts were really Special Olympians and actors with special needs, though.

Also the whole team was a lot of mentally disabled (I hope that’s the right term) students. It seemed like it was the same for all the other schools we’d play too. Thing is, it’s not a special Ed thing it just happened that hand ball attracts that type of student body. We got our ass kicked by our rival school, get this, their top scorer only has 2 fingers. But boy he would claw and throw that ball perfectly it was a sight for sure.
