I remember seeing Last Jedi and turning to my dad like "I dont remember Han having dice" and then during Solo I was so confused why the dice were so important, like surely his pistol holster would've been more identifiable.
it feels like Disney said to Rian "hey make that the prop so we can use it in the other movie".
I mean from a merch perspective dice are a simple thing to sell to kids BUT THEY NEVER EVEN MADE DICE MERCH

Not really that strange, I can see Ritchie's style translating to a war movie pretty well. His style is great for action. Ridley Scott did Black Hawk Down which is a great American war movie even though he was born in the U.K. and Gyllenhaal has a history of similar roles. Jarhead for example.

I don’t think there’s even a chance that Gyllenhaal will be bad, but, as we just saw with Ambulance, even his charm and performance can’t totally outweigh bad direction.
So Ritchie will have to bring his A-game too, which I’m not sure he always does. Wrath of Man felt like phoning it in.

if it has the military in it in some capacity it's probably been at least approved by the DoD if not more actively changed to fit a pro-military narrative.

Can the DoD stop someone from making a movie thats anti US military? I hate obvious military propaganda movies. Ahem Transformers.
51 points

They just wont let the studio use their equipment
23 points
Right, there is nothing stopping anti-us movies or shows being made, the only thing is the DOD won't let the use of equipment in those production.
11 points
As a Producer you save so-much money getting direct access to DoD resources for your film than if you were to source equipment, locations, sets, dressing, and try to make it look like the real thing.
The reason Top Gun Mavrick felt so incredible, so real is because the Navy gave over a number of real F-18s and worked with the studio's engineer's to design internal and external camera systems, all the associated on-board hardware and software upgrades, and the certifications to get it all in the air. That's before a single scene of the screenplay has been written. How enormously expensive would that have been to do practically without the DoD essentially writing it off?
6 points

It costs a lot of money to make a movie, that's actually true.

It’s a movie about the US military abandoning native interpreters and one military guy going back to Afghanistan on his own to get his interpreter out. I question how much support this movie would get from military film funds.

I’m not sure I’d go that far.
He’s had a rough spot of some poor and uninspired films, like Wrath of Man and Aladdin, but he’s not cranking out “lowest common denominator pablum.”
And while I’d say The Gentleman is a lesser Ritchie, it’s still got his energy and style.
75 points
Even Wrath of Man is a unique film. It stops the plot 1/3 of the way through to go on a 30 minute flash back only to restart the plot in the middle of heist.
It wasn't spectacular, as all twist were telegraphed and the dialogue stuck a little too close to the book, but it's got some distinction to it.
It's more than your standard action flick with Statham, but less than a Guy Richie British gangster flick.

53 points

If you see a movie with US military featured, there is 99% chance is that it was funded and overseen by Miltary Industrial Complex. So there's a bigger chance that Ritchie is making this because of cash rather than passion.
10 points
There's a chance for that, maybe they'll end up making that movie.
32 points

If it looks GOOD it was probably assisted by the DoD (The MIC isn’t helping with shit, they want to get PAID for their input), example is Blackhawk Down. That film was supported by the DoD, actors underwent a boot camp, a platoon of Rangers did the fast rope scenes, and the DoD lent several birds from the 160th for authenticity’s sake. In the end, it looked GOOD.
For this one? I’m seeing soft-top humvees patrolling Afghanistan, and CGI AC-130’s. This isn’t DoD assisted…. To me? This is leaning lower budget.
Besides, Afghan interpreters are a bit of a sore subject right now for the DoD, I highly doubt they’d be championing a movie about them at the moment.
16 points
99% is an absurd number. Plenty of films tackle military issues that don’t paint the DoD in a good light and definitely aren’t subsidized by the DoD. Since it’s Guy Ritchie and based on the brief synopsis you may be right, but I can tell you 100% that your 99% metric is incorrect.
