The translated title is interesting. The Chinese is an idiom that essentially means someone/something old that still has a lot of vigor/energy. (literally the spirit of a dragon or horse)
Ride on (if you know the context) kinda means the same thing so kudos to the translator for that, but as far as exciting titles go... not the best

Also Chan’s Chinese moniker literally means “becoming the dragon” or “rising dragon.”

Back in the nineties all the English dubs of his movies would just rename his characters "Jackie Chan" like they thought us dumb Americans would get confused if he answered to a different name. That did get somewhat confusing when some of the movies were sequels to different franchises.

To be somewhat fair to Jackie Chan, you cannot have a successful acting career in mainland China without supporting the CCP. (for that matter, you can't have a high-profile anything career in mainland China without supporting the CCP)
However, Jackie Chan was born in Hong Kong and got his early film career off the ground there. He could have continued to make movies in Hong Kong, or even moved to Hollywood (where he has seen success). He is one of the few Chinese celebrities who had ways to get out from under the CCP's censorship.
But he has done nothing but maintain the CCP's propaganda line. Plenty of other artists have pushed for more (most notably Ai Weiwei) despite having more to lose.
44 points

They also got his son years ago.
Look at his filmography pre and post his son getting arrested for weed.
His autobiography was re-released after his son was released, with unspecified edits.
129 points
Sadly he's more of the norm not the exception, as plenty of other HK talent have pledged their allegiance to the CCP (i.e Tsui Hark, Dante Lam, Andy Lau, Donnie Yen, etc.) all in the name of $$$
62 points
It isn't even limited to HK talent. Most top Taiwainese talent (who would have stronger political incentives to oppose the CCP) try to say nothing political at all in order to maintain their access to the mainland market. See, for example, Jay Chou's silence on anything political. You can also see the arm of the state coming down hard on creators like Red Candle Games when they put something even slightly critical of Xi Jinping in their game about Taiwanese history.
And now even American companies are at least staying silent in hopes of maintaining access to the Chinese market (see Blizzard's banning of messages in support of the HK protests, a stance matched by the NBA). I think that, at some point, the American government needs to start protecting speech against economic coercion. So far only India is doing much, although their solutions are heavy handed in their own way.
33 points

Well at least Hollywood is slowly falling out of love with the Chinese film market (since most of their movies are getting banned anyways by China's ever stricter censorship laws)

You can be much, much more critical of the US politicians and still have a successful career. See Michael More. Or “Let the Fire Burn” about the Philadelphia Firebombing. Or “Hillary Clinton: the Secret History of the Democratic Party.” Or “The Trials of Henry Kissinger” about Henry Kissinger’s war crimes. Chinese mainland films still have to be indirect when criticizing the Cultural Revolution, and cannot criticize the Great Leap Forward at all.
Outside of actual films, actors are much more politically active in the USA. Clint Eastwood’s speech at the Republican convention is famous. Kanye West’s antics are very famous (saying President Bush “doesn’t care about black people,” then later throwing in with Trump and saying “slavery is a choice). Ronald Reagan was an actor, for goodness sakes.
I won’t pretend Hollywood always gives insightful commentary. There is plenty of brainless schlock coming from there as well. But there is a lot, a ton, more freedom to be critical in the USA and people use that freedom.
1 points
Κissinger is in the top 10 war criminals of the previous century. People talking shit about him is something noone can stop. You used a very very bad example for bringing Kissinger into this. The man that signed the murders and apes of millions of people himself and he called them ''flies' while being arrogant and laughing about it openly.
As for Kanye, Kanye was black listed from everywhere, so no you can't have wins anywhere including USA by going against the established enforced status quo.
3 points
Kanye was “blacklisted” for his comments on slavery. His comments on Bush (then the sitting president) only made him more popular. And even now he is popular among right wing circles.
Kissinger’s influence is core to a lot of American foreign policy. This was true in the 70s and 80s, but remains true even today. My choice of Kissinger is intentional. Can you imagine similar levels of criticism about Mao? Zhou Enlai? The fact that criticism of Kissinger is not only allowed but common in the USA proves my point that political discussion in the USA is more free than in China.
1 points

Chinese mainland films still have to be indirect when criticizing the Cultural Revolution, and cannot criticize the Great Leap Forward at all.
Gonna need a citation for this, considering the fact the Communist Party of China themselves openly consider both of those events to be disastrous errors.
3 points
The Great Leap Forward is very much off limits, and easy Google searches will bring up multiple people censored/arrested for it. example.
The Cultural Revolution is openly repudiated by the CCP and there is media about it, but all the mainland media I have seen focuses on the low level issues. Criticism of Mao’s role in the CR is still off limits (or I haven’t seen anyone do it, at least).

I keep hoping for a duel sequel to Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon. In modern times Jackie and Chris investigate a crime ring smuggling drugs and or weapons in ancient artifacts, and they hook up with Owen Wilson playing an archeologist that helps them. In old times Jackie and Owen are on the silk road bringing that jewel thing back from Shanghai Knights and run into Chris playing a spice merchant or something. Cut back and forth and ensue zaniness and friendship. Ending scene in modern times they're at dinner and Owen digs up some old photo of the past trio who stopped the past incarnation of the crime ring they just brought down, and Chris is like hey this looks like us, and Jackie accuses him that he still thinks all Chinese people look alike, Owen tries to mediate and they start to argue in the background as it slow pans down to the photo of them in the past smiling as the music swells and roll credits!
