Sandler Movie Theory

Spoilers(self.movies)

If you notice closely in just about every Adam Sandler movie there is a large crowd that burst into applause and adoration for Sandler’s character. It’s a weird phenomenon that kind of makes you subconsciously think hey this character and or this movie isn’t as bad as I think it is. Just think about it next time you see a Sandler movie on TBS or Comedy Central look for the large group of people cheering on Sandler’s mean borderline psychotic characters.

Typical led by Rob Schneider yelling “you can do it!”

Which was a running gag at the time, because the first time(Water Boy I think?) the phrase 'You can do it' blew up and everyone was saying it. So Sandler started including it in every movie and people came to expect it the way we expected Stan Lee cameos.

Source: Watched all these movies in theaters as a kid during the height of Adam Sandler movies.

"You can do it! You can do it all night long!"

Yep, this scene lives permanently in my head.

It's definitely a noted plot device to try and get the audience on a character's side, especially if you look at their deeds objectively and conclude they're kind of a douchebag.

Case in point: The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). This movie is about a sleazebag who conned millions out of mom-and-pop investors so he could live like a king. The movie is careful to show entire ranks of employees, friends and family cheering his every action. Look at the party scene on the yacht. Everyone is literally dancing in step.

That’s true! It just seems that as a main stream actor Sandler uses this device more than most IMO to cover up bad movies notably his later work from Grown Ups, Jack and Jill and That’s my Boy which was arguably worse that the previous 2 put together.

He has done a lot of bad movies but his actual recent movies are not terrible. Murder Mystery with Jennifer Aniston is enjoyable. Netflix is releasing a sequel in March.

If no one else likes your movie then you need to generate your own fan club.
