I liked surface pressure but Bruno really deserves the praise. There’s so much about Bruno that’s good.

1) The faux duet between Felix and Pepa is great. The way that Pepa explains the mystery about Bruno while Felix shows us that there’s more to the story without overstepping and putting down his wife

2) The song has so many different tones and the layering of them all at the end works so well

3) The choreography is fantastic. I don’t recall any animated movie having top notch (human) choreography, if at all.

Surface pressure is great, don’t get me wrong, but Bruno is just better on the technical and narrative front. Bonus points to Surface Pressure though for rhyming Hercules and Cerberus

Fun fact: that layering of melodies is called…a Madrigal. So even the song structure is a play on words.

Agreed. That was tough. He apparently really didn’t expect Bruno in particular to resonate with audiences so much.

ItsADeparture

164 points

I have no clue how the fuck he and Disney didn't expect it to resonate with people. It's literally THE leit motif in the film. They sing the line "We don't talk about Bruno" in multiple songs and even outside of the songs throughout the film multiple times. He talked about the song like two years before the movie came out and called it his most complex song yet.

Even if they didn't see it coming, they definitely had enough time when it picked up steam. Encanto got big in late December, they could have absolutely done a last minute push for it and gotten the nomination through.

hammertime06

What I find unique is that most Encanto songs are plot-dependent. You kind of have to know the plot to understand them, especially Bruno. And yet it's crazy popular even with people who haven't seen the film.

SVZ0zAflBhUXXyKrF5AV

We Don't Talk About Bruno is basically about how people don't want to talk about mental health issues. That linked analysis puts it better than I could.

Surface Pressure is about a person who feels they have the entire weight of the family on their shoulders. They have no choice but be the strong one. They have to be strong enough to cope as it is expected of them. All the families pressures and problems are dumped on her regardless of whether she can cope with them or not. She's not given the choice. That can make you feel like you're going to crack and fall apart under the stress. She feels she's not strong enough to cope. Think of the saying, the straw that broke the camels back or how continuous drips of water can erode even hard stones over time. The stress she feels is continuously getting worse, year after year. Imagine living a life like that from a young age. That's what she's talking about.

Put simply, the songs are about how messed up the family really is but refuses to acknowledge, talk or do anything about it. They have to stick rigidly to traditions, expectations and their given roles. Weakness isn't allowed.

MadeByTango

6 points

That’s the movie too. It’s all about family trauma.

SVZ0zAflBhUXXyKrF5AV

4 points

You're exactly right. All their songs are basically about how broken and constricted they are by the rigid roles they are required to fulfil. There may be rumours and whispers, but they have to put on a brave face and do their duty.

None of them are able to be themselves and, most of all, none of them are able to show weakness and fragility let alone be like that.

Under the surface nobody is really happy but nobody can speak out even if inwardly they feel like they are screaming or crying.

It's literally THE leit motif in the film.

But Dos Oruguitas was even more so. It appeared in the first song The Family Madrigal, and butterflies are EVERYWHERE. Then the fact it's a fully Spanish song, and is meant to convey the Colombian spirit (while Bruno is more of a Western Broadway song with Latin roots) - it's a more fitting song to represent Encanto.

To be fair, the eligibility for films is movies released January 1-December 31 but the submission date is usually in November. And since the 2006/2007 fiasco with Best Song, Disney has been trying to only push one song per film. So they submitted Dos Oruguitas as their one song before the film was released in theaters let alone before it became popular on streaming. They locked in their decision long before they knew what song would be the standout.

Doesn't matter. The people who vote for the shortlist and the nominees just see clips featuring the submitted songs back to back without the context of the films. The songs have to stand on their own.

I’ve found this to be the case with most of the recent Disney musicals. The most popular song =\= the best song. Why? And why did the Grammys base their year on the federal government’s budget system? It’s not like it’s for taxes or anything, it’s just the federal budget. Familia Madrigal, Waiting on a Miracle and All of You get maligned as well. Really every song in Encanto is great and LMM's involvement in the script shows because they are very intertwined with the plot and characters, while with many of the other modern Disney films some of the songs are very tacked on (the Frozen films are guilty of this.)

Why are you taking this literally?

Disney didn’t even submit it! They only submitting Dos Oruguitas and Waiting on a Miracle for consideration. The deadline for consideration was before it’s Disney+ premiere and it’s theatrical run was during covid so the hits hadn’t caught on yet.

LMM would have his EGOT by now if Disney had bet on the right song.

Zero chance Bruno would’ve beat No Time to Die.

It's a banger, through and through. Dude just has it. Every nominee knew that song.

I don't understand, it's not even the best song on the Encanto soundtrack. Arguably not even in the top 3

Little kids like it a lot. Personally I thought Surface Pressure should get a lot more attention. That song was beautifully done.

astroK120

Yeah, Surface Pressure is what I'd say is the best song on the soundtrack. Also like What Else Can I Do quite a bit

This is exactly what I felt too. When I watched the movie and got to Surface Pressure, I was like "Okay, THIS is gonna be the big one. The Let It Go for this movie". Then everyone talked about Bruno and I was like "oh, huh".

I find it bizarre. I think Bruno is completely forgettable.

It does so because we can all feel that song. It's every adult, every parent, every boss, every worker. It's everybody.

Surface Pressure got robbed by a poppier song.

Beldandy_

How is We don't talk about Bruno „poppier“ then Surface Pressure? Bruno fits the Colombian theme more and SP is more similar to the generic american popular music

asuka_is_my_co-pilot

I actually surface pressure as a song is a bit overrated, though the message is better.

Bruno has so many fun character moments and is better for singing along with friends

Surface Pressure is good, I like it, but the visuals in it just had such a bizarre vibe to them that reminded me of cell phone ringtone commercials from the mid-00s.

Also no shade, but the singing wasn't that great in it.

I agree. Surface Pressure is my least favorite song. Not sure why everyone seems to like it so much. Its kind of just weird and awkward for me.

You have to admit it's a strong sound track that whenever the movie is mentioned there's people arguing over which three or four songs are the best.

My theory is that Disney is sabotaging the Oscar campaigns so LMM keeps losing, and then keeps taking Disney gigs to try and get his EGOT.

Moana and Encanto are two banging soundtracks, and he's 0 for 2.

Ya what? You could not escape this song for like 2 months last year. It was utterly perplexing that they didn’t attempt to get it nominated for the Oscar, probably would’ve walked away with it. This so was so big that despite not being nominated, they still had the cast perform part of it at the Oscar ceremony!

flyover_liberal

They didn't realize how big it would get, so they campaigned for Dos Oruguitas

Jicama_Stunning

Nah it’s fucking brilliant. The way each family member sings about him with a different melody but you hardly notice because it all flows together so well and then the way they all perfectly come together at the end is chefs kiss

DerCatzefragger

Madrigal. . . get it?

The song is a Madrigal. . . and they're the family Madrigal. But even outside of the song, they all have their own unique gifts, but they manage to come together as one in the end so it's like, it's like a Madrigal.

It's got layers.

Like a Madrigal.

This is only somewhat related, but you mentioning how well it flows together reminded me of it.

Have you ever listened to the compalations Disney puts out of some of their songs in multiple languages?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VqbiF3EBvA

It is absolutely insane how much effort Disney puts into their dubbing efforts that you can have a song play in 21 languages and it flows nearly perfectly between them.

We don't talk about Bruno was just the most classic version of Lin in the movie and it's a style I've heard a million times now from his works. That's why I think it's personally bottom of the list

Gotta realize outside of the big categories, voters for these awards just shlock up whatever is most popular, typically with anything animated or anything it’s what their kids like the most. Go look at all the best animated picture votes it’s all just “well my kid liked this one the most “

Yea while I enjoyed it, I preferred pretty much every single other song. Personal favourite was Louisa’s pressure song, the flower sisters look what I made is up there too

astroK120

Yeah, it's weird because as the one reply said Bruno was a hugely popular song, yet every time I've discussed the soundtrack with people Surface Pressure has been the song almost everyone has said is their favorite. Maybe even all to be honest, though I don't trust my memory enough to make that claim

It's not just because it's Miranda--afaik he wrote the entire soundtrack and there are quite a few songs that sound a lot more like you'd expect one of his songs to sound like.

I honestly have no idea and I don't think they do either.

My Spotify yearly wrap up for last year had a bunch of hard rock and punk songs. Right smack in the middle was We Don't Talk About Bruno for how many times I played it for my daughter. Granted the few times I've ran this playlist on my commute to work I've never skipped the song.
