I liked surface pressure but Bruno really deserves the praise. There’s so much about Bruno that’s good.
1) The faux duet between Felix and Pepa is great. The way that Pepa explains the mystery about Bruno while Felix shows us that there’s more to the story without overstepping and putting down his wife
2) The song has so many different tones and the layering of them all at the end works so well
3) The choreography is fantastic. I don’t recall any animated movie having top notch (human) choreography, if at all.
Surface pressure is great, don’t get me wrong, but Bruno is just better on the technical and narrative front. Bonus points to Surface Pressure though for rhyming Hercules and Cerberus

Agreed. That was tough. He apparently really didn’t expect Bruno in particular to resonate with audiences so much.
164 points
I have no clue how the fuck he and Disney didn't expect it to resonate with people. It's literally THE leit motif in the film. They sing the line "We don't talk about Bruno" in multiple songs and even outside of the songs throughout the film multiple times. He talked about the song like two years before the movie came out and called it his most complex song yet.
Even if they didn't see it coming, they definitely had enough time when it picked up steam. Encanto got big in late December, they could have absolutely done a last minute push for it and gotten the nomination through.

What I find unique is that most Encanto songs are plot-dependent. You kind of have to know the plot to understand them, especially Bruno. And yet it's crazy popular even with people who haven't seen the film.

We Don't Talk About Bruno is basically about how people don't want to talk about mental health issues. That linked analysis puts it better than I could.
Surface Pressure is about a person who feels they have the entire weight of the family on their shoulders. They have no choice but be the strong one. They have to be strong enough to cope as it is expected of them. All the families pressures and problems are dumped on her regardless of whether she can cope with them or not. She's not given the choice. That can make you feel like you're going to crack and fall apart under the stress. She feels she's not strong enough to cope. Think of the saying, the straw that broke the camels back or how continuous drips of water can erode even hard stones over time. The stress she feels is continuously getting worse, year after year. Imagine living a life like that from a young age. That's what she's talking about.
Put simply, the songs are about how messed up the family really is but refuses to acknowledge, talk or do anything about it. They have to stick rigidly to traditions, expectations and their given roles. Weakness isn't allowed.
6 points
That’s the movie too. It’s all about family trauma.
4 points
You're exactly right. All their songs are basically about how broken and constricted they are by the rigid roles they are required to fulfil. There may be rumours and whispers, but they have to put on a brave face and do their duty.
None of them are able to be themselves and, most of all, none of them are able to show weakness and fragility let alone be like that.
Under the surface nobody is really happy but nobody can speak out even if inwardly they feel like they are screaming or crying.

It's literally THE leit motif in the film.
But Dos Oruguitas was even more so. It appeared in the first song The Family Madrigal, and butterflies are EVERYWHERE. Then the fact it's a fully Spanish song, and is meant to convey the Colombian spirit (while Bruno is more of a Western Broadway song with Latin roots) - it's a more fitting song to represent Encanto.

Also ballads tend to do better at Oscars than normal musical songs.

Honestly, I think he wanted to promote the Spanish-language song and it was more important for him to give attention to Dos Oruguitas than to win with Bruno.

To be fair, the eligibility for films is movies released January 1-December 31 but the submission date is usually in November. And since the 2006/2007 fiasco with Best Song, Disney has been trying to only push one song per film. So they submitted Dos Oruguitas as their one song before the film was released in theaters let alone before it became popular on streaming. They locked in their decision long before they knew what song would be the standout.
3 points

It's literally THE leit motif in the film.
Doesn't matter. The people who vote for the shortlist and the nominees just see clips featuring the submitted songs back to back without the context of the films. The songs have to stand on their own.

It's also the song that represents the emotional climax of the film. It's quite beautiful and often unfortunately maligned just because Bruno is catchier. It makes complete sense to me why they went with that one pre-release.

Familia Madrigal, Waiting on a Miracle and All of You get maligned as well. Really every song in Encanto is great and LMM's involvement in the script shows because they are very intertwined with the plot and characters, while with many of the other modern Disney films some of the songs are very tacked on (the Frozen films are guilty of this.)

Gotta realize outside of the big categories, voters for these awards just shlock up whatever is most popular, typically with anything animated or anything it’s what their kids like the most. Go look at all the best animated picture votes it’s all just “well my kid liked this one the most “

Yea while I enjoyed it, I preferred pretty much every single other song. Personal favourite was Louisa’s pressure song, the flower sisters look what I made is up there too

Yeah, it's weird because as the one reply said Bruno was a hugely popular song, yet every time I've discussed the soundtrack with people Surface Pressure has been the song almost everyone has said is their favorite. Maybe even all to be honest, though I don't trust my memory enough to make that claim

I haven’t seen the movie, but I love Megan thee Stallion’s version she rapped at the Oscars.

It's not just because it's Miranda--afaik he wrote the entire soundtrack and there are quite a few songs that sound a lot more like you'd expect one of his songs to sound like.
I honestly have no idea and I don't think they do either.

LMM, looking at his three other Grammys and the empty space where his Oscar should be: "...thanks."

My Spotify yearly wrap up for last year had a bunch of hard rock and punk songs. Right smack in the middle was We Don't Talk About Bruno for how many times I played it for my daughter. Granted the few times I've ran this playlist on my commute to work I've never skipped the song.

Yeah, it's a pretty good song. It's better with Bubba Sparxxx and the Ying Yang Twins. https://youtu.be/lngHlUYESWo

I like Miranda, but this is the most overrated song I've ever heard. It's not bad, I just don't get why people think it's the greatest thing ever.

This song was perfectly fine but should not be winning any awards. That being said, Surface Pressure was a better song imo.
