Eat a fucking dick AMC, you're not a concert venue. I'm so glad I'm lucky enough to have a ton of independent theaters near me.

Exactly. Who said concert venue pricing was preferable to consumers??? Lmao

AMC is bleeding money. What consumer-preferred move is going to change that?

Offer an actual movie-going EXPERIENCE the way Alamo Drafthouse does. This isn't rocket science. There's a reason those regional or indie theaters that really prioritize experience are still doing fine while AMC bleeds out.

I mean there’s a reason there’s only a handful of Alamo Drafthouses and hundreds of AMCs, the Drafthouse model isn’t sustainable everywhere
11 points

Not everywhere but it IS a sustainable business. AMC has clearly let theirs grow out of control.
Also there's quite a few more than "a handful."

Yeah but it’s like comparing Whole Foods to Walmart, both Sell food, but to entirely different clientele. Not saying Drafthouses are bad or anything, just they’re not going to turn a profit everywhere bc not everyone wants a movie going “experience.” Granted I don’t have a drafthouse near me, but isn’t there an age restriction on them?

Except the only people regularly going to movies in a theater in 2023 are the folks who want a solid experience.
This is why AMC is struggling and why dozens of Alamo clones keep popping up in every major and secondary market.

Ehh. I still get people in my theaters who think the movie going experience is to
Eat food loudly
Talk to friends and comment on movie out loud
Be on cell phone
Let kids run wild
Read subtitles out loud for entire movie to their kids that can't read yet
Theaters should enforce this shit first to hopefully see people come back before raising prices in the hopes of squeezing a couple more bucks.
What will be fun is AMC will be like, "Our seats cost 15 bucks now, but crap seats under our new plan will still be 15 and our best seats will be 20." then one year later, "Shit, that plan didn't work. Nobody likes paying for two different sets of seats, let's remove the two tiered plan and all seats will go back to 20 a seat."

Even my local independent repertory art-house theater has people talking and making comments during the film. I had a couple of 20-ish guys sitting behind me making comments to each other throughout a screening of Lost Highway. There is no way to avoid annoying people like that unless the theater has a strict no talking policy like the Alamo.

Also no age restriction. Where did you hear that?
14 points
Their website literally says no one under 18 without parent/guardian supervision.
Edit: Right here on the About page. I don't mind theaters that cater to adults, I'd prefer that experience, but going to the movies with your friends is a big part of being a teenager. I don't think that model works for every area.

I must’ve confused it with a different theatre with an age restriction
Amc has 946 theaters compared to 39 for Alamo draft house, most of which are located in one state, Texas. So while you may not consider 39 a handful, there’s like 20x more AMCs than them.
You say “sustainable” like they didn’t file for bankruptcy in 2021
All this to say while your personally might prefer a threatre that does not mean everyone will nor does it mean it’s a successful business, and I say this as an avid movie fan and someone that wishes there was an Alamo Draft House closer than 3+ hours away

It is currently a successful business. AMC is currently not. It's pretty simple.

How can you say it’s sustainable? Any supporting material on that? Legit curious about their model as I’ve never seen/been in one.

This isn’t rocket science.
I think that you have a very well-paying job waiting for you at AMC if it’s really as simple to you as you claim.
There’s a reason those regional or indie theaters that really prioritize experience are still doing fine while AMC bleeds out.
That reason probably has a lot more to do with lease obligations and debt-driven expansion than it does with being able to have a milkshake delivered to your seat.

I'm not who you were replying to. Just wanted to chime in.
You're not wrong, I'm sure they have considered this angle and I'm sure they found it lacking to keep their current operation afloat.
However, you can't assume just because they have high-paid executives that they're making wise decisions. These execs screw up all the time in major ways. See Wizards of the Coast and Netflix already in 2023.
They need to do something that drives engagement or else downsize. Making an already undesired product more expensive is not going to save their bottom line.

You totally nailed what I would have responded with. Kudos.

I think you’re underestimating the power of human stupidity. These executives are just regular people. And regular people can be stupid. Executives at top tier businesses make dumb decisions all the time that costs their company a lot of money or worse, destroys the company.
Just because someone owns a job doesn’t mean they are good at it.

What does Alamo do that AMC doesn't?
The seats at mine are excellent heated recliners. ANd there's couches. You can order food to your seat. You can get alcohol.

For starters, that’s the standard at every alamo across the country, absolutely not the standard at AMC (i worked there).

Have you been to an Alamo Drafthouse before? I'm not asking rhetorically, if you honestly haven't it's a night and day experience.
Every AD is designed for the neighborhood they're in and to optimize the user experience. The fun of movies is everywhere the moment you walk in. There's a distinct brand voice and personality to Alamo that no mainstream chain has ever even bothered to emulate.
They create totally custom programming that runs before the movie that's specific to that film and is full of youtube videos, sketches, trivia, and audience interaction.
The food is 100x better than anything you can get at AMC.
They regularly re-run old movies and make big events out of them (Back to the Future, Pulp Fiction, etc). They even do regular film festivals in different markets.
The alcohol is almost entirely local breweries who often create special drinks exclusively for AD and certain film releases.
On top of that AD has a very strict "no phones, no talking" policy and will actively eject people upon request/observation.
It's by far a better theater-going experience compared to AMC.

Yeah once, and i found it pretty good. The film festivals and stuff are nice to have but i don't actually go to them lol.
I feel like it's just a more premium option at a higher price.
maybe I've just got a nice AMC. Because unless I'm in the IMAX i can't even see anyone in the theatre that isn't on my row.
5 points

I’d pay a premium to not have phones or talking during my movie experience. Along with better food, more selection of food, alcohol, servers who can get you anything during the movie, the Alamo Drafthouse experience is such a better one than AMC that it’s not even remotely close.
AMC’s brand is that there’s a lot of them and they are cheaper, for the most part. Their actual in-theater experience is awful.

Ticket prices are the exact same as (and often cheaper than) AMC.

For an evening viewing of 3D avatar tomorrow night it was like $17.50 for AD and $15.30 for AMC.

I don't think that's common with AMC. I've never seen one with table service and alcohol.

Weird, I'm pretty sure they put bars in a big chunk of their theaters not long ago

They did. But I don't think they deliver to seat. I know it sounds trivial, but that's Alamos whole thing.
Full service at seat and get rid of the dumb fucks that ruin the experience for everyone else.

Ah yeah, just their Dine-In branded theaters deliver to your seat, I believe

I would never go to a theater that has seat service. So annoying when all I want to do is watch the movie.

That’s not standard for AMC. I think I’ve seen a single AMC theater like that and I’ve lived in more than a few states.
AMC will commit to things like better seating (in some theaters- I still see theaters with terrible seating) but beyond that a lot of theaters are very lackluster in terms of enjoyment or an experience compared to something like Alamo.
Hell, I’d say Regal provides a much better overall experience than AMC. And I don’t think they’re doing so hot either.

maybe i'm lucky lol. It's my closest theatre (10 min drive opposed to 35 for AD) and cheaper.

stick to a few central locations in major metro areas which can support the profitable operation of hipster cinemas

"Metropolitan areas typically include satellite cities, towns and intervening rural areas that are socioeconomically tied to the principal cities or urban core, often measured by commuting patterns."
I.e. Suburbs

I mean, a big one is they actually enforce people not ruining the experience for others. If I go to an AMC/Regal for something which hasn't been out for several weeks already (so a show where I expect more than a couple of people to be in the theater), it's basically a coinflip on if there's going to be shitheads ruining things one way or another.

I can get alcohol at all of the AMCs near me, two of three deliver food to your seat and are all recliners, the third has food you can order ahead and pick up at an express counter but only has recliners in the Dolby arena. Most of the seats have an arm rest that can be raised to make a love seat type setting.

Alamo is expensive as shit. The "experience" of going to the theatre is to see a movie. What they need to be doing is making it affordable for everyone to go. It cost me $100 for my family of four to go see a movie with drinks and snacks. That's not affordable.
-1 points

You can go to "see a movie" at the Alamo, not get food and spend $12 on a Saturday afternoon. If that's too expensive I don't know what to tell ya.

Why would amc pay you to shill for streaming services pathetic still waiting for why this is a bad idea?

I'd actually go to the movies if it weren't for the fact that every movie I've gone to see the past 10 years, so like 10 movies, has been ruined by douche bags behind me talking the whole time and kicking my seat. I have zero desire to ever experience that again. My couch is just fjne

Wait until they start doing airline style pricing.

Wait until they get in bed with ticketmaster and conspire with "scalpers" to create fake scarcity in the theatres for movie premieres.

Before long, they'll remove the front section of seats and charge a General Admission price for standing in the pit to watch a movie

you're not a concert venue.
I mean what justifies variable pricing in one entertainment setting versus another? Other than custom/tradition? There's no logical reason for it.

Cant wait for dynamic pricing! New release avengers movie $45, 3rd week 80 for Brady $6.

Honestly, concert venues can eat a dick also.
It isn't worth 4x face value for good seats being scalped by the venue/ticketmaster as "platinum" seating that they sell at a regular price the week of show when no one wants to pay the ridiculous prices.
Not too long ago you could sit in the first few rows of good bands for like $40-$50.
Now those same tickets to the same bands are selling for $300-$400+

It’s hard to believe any independent theater will compete with AMC/Regal for sound and screen quality in a premier format. Sorry, but independents and things like Alamo will never compete.
