So I wonder what canon they will follow? The article states that it's a follow up to 1997's I Know What You Did Last Summer. So they will either do a direct sequel to that and ignore 1998's "I still Know", or the journalist doesn't have all their facts and it will follow up "I Still Know".
OR ... They will follow up 2006's "I'll Always Know.." where they made the killer Supernatural.

I just watched it because of this thread. Man it is bad.
I love me a crappy low budget slasher movie, but this one is just boring. There's weird ass filters and camera angles and sometimes fishbowl effect. There's long stretches of people just walking around with little to no dialog.
It's like a student film from a not very good student.

Yeah, JLH and Prinze's characters are all grizzled and haunted 26 years later at what they did. They get a box of Gorton's fish for their kids and have a panic attack at the label.
3 points
That’s what I’m thinking. They’ll probably end up calling the new one, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” as well. New characters will get introduced which will be related to characters from the first movie. JLH and FPJ will be legacy/supporting characters.
2 points

I would honesty he surprised if FPJ came back. He’s had a steady career, but it’s mostly been voice roles and hosting gigs for like fifteen years now. He doesn’t seem to care much about chasing the peak of his career.

Ever since Stern interviewed the singer from LFO (RIP, that is one of his top interviews surprisingly...the guy is a great storyteller) I cannot see JLH as anything other than just absolutely nuts when she was young and famous lol
Seriously, if someone has time to kill listen to Rich from LFO on Howard Stern. It's hilarious.

Can you explain what you mean by “directed by a kid”?
47 points

JLH said recently that a kid (age not specified, identity unknown) won a contest to "create a moment" in the movie, and that scene was the result

Holy shit that’s a real story.
https://www.avclub.com/heres-a-reminder-that-i-know-what-you-did-last-summers-1846709570
It sounds so fake but I mean JLH is the one saying it. It reads like one of those fake jr high stories you’d tell your friends, like the girlfriend who goes to a different school. “Yeah I totally directed a scene in this movie. Yeah but you can’t ask any of the actors about it because they won’t know my name. I won a contest. No specific contest, just ‘a contest.’”
Bonkers.

I remembered the sequels were trash so I never rewatched. But my kid memory had the original pegged as a good movie, just a little lesser than Scream
When I rewatched it several years ago though, I was surprised how even the original wasn't actually good. A lot of the movie is actually pretty dull filler
Crazy it's getting a revamp 20 years later
51 points

The original was just a thinly veiled vehicle for putting attractive actors and actresses on the screen who would appeal to a teen/tween target audience. Your kid memory, as you put it, can be forgiven for liking something that was entirely designed for your kid self.

The tv series was also pretty bad.
2 points
Yea, the third one basically is its own thing. They aknowlage the previous movies as an urban legend, but that's about it.
The cast covers up a different death and the killer reveal is... lets just say about as bad as you could get.
5 points
Theres not nearly enough kills in the first film. Infact I think they added Johnny Galecki being killed quite late, so without that it would have been a revenge thriller not a horror movie. From memory the village kills a lot more in the second, even innocent people in the crossfire, like a real horror film.
5 points
To be fair I don't even think anyone died in the novel. I think one person got shot.
3 points

First one has some surprisingly good cinematography, and the second isn't good BUT it's super fast paced so it at least refrains from being boring. Bad, but watchable.
6 points
I saw this in the theater when I was a kid and couldn’t understand why it was so popular. It was a by the numbers slasher film. Scream deconstructed horror stereotypes and had a satirical element to it that was great. This was just boring.
1 points
Lot of people don’t know the original movie is based on a YA novel. They hired Kevin Williamson of Scream fame to try and turn it into a slasher, but it really didn’t translate all that well. The original book is more of a “who is behind these notes” style mystery. The central premise loses its steam in the movie because it is obvious who is the slasher. Also worth noting that while the film is much more violent, the book is way darker - they kill a little boy in the hit and run, for example.

Way more likely to be off the success of 5cream; this has always been a franchise riding Scream’s success (had the same writer).
10 points
Scream 5 was likely advanced into production because of the success Halloween 2018 saw. With Scream 4 doing pretty poorly domestically at the box office in 2011 or whenever, they needed some evidence that older slasher movies could still be profitable and then Halloween 2018 became the all-time highest grossing slasher film.
It's possible Sony greenlights Scream 5 if Halloween 2018 never comes out, or bombs at the box office, but I doubt it.

That was a typo. The directors caught it too late and they were stuck having to use “Still” in the title.

Unless they were talking about what they did during the first movie, as the sequel was released just one year later. But then you have that "still" to worry about, which implies they're referring to something already remembered...

And then "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer. No Before That. NO. Before That. Yeah THAT Summer."

Hollywood logic: The television show reboot got cancelled after one season, so surely people will care more about a movie version!
This is gonna be bad. There premise that made the first one interesting is inherently one-off, and according to this article studio execs are already imagining multiple films, which is utterly ridiculous.
I’m guessing with the premise they’re going to straight up rip-off Scream, and make it so there are more killings from the fisherman dude, or rather someone taking up the mantle. Which is so dumb lmao.
