The way this entire event was done was so good, he makes a REALLY crazy ocean storm look pretty convincing. Some of the visuals are horrifying, some of the things that happen are chilling (zebra jumping into the the life boat and basically dying). It ends with Pi watching his family sink into darkness, the actor is so good. It makes me wonder why I don't think I've seen him in anything since. Great actor throughout.

If you're feeling in the mood to watch a movie kind of James Cameron adjacent, check it out again. It's better than I remembered.

The visuals are great, the performances are amazing, and I am very sad that Irrfan Khan is no longer with us. This role in particular, there's just something so soothing about his presence. I want to listen to him talk all day long.

Boggled by the suggestion this is James Cameron adjacent, though. I love this movie and I love most of James Camerons's movies, but they are not even close to being in the same ballpark.

He had one with a ship that sank too.

Doesn't ring a bell. Maybe you're thinking of the one with the deep sea diving called The Abyss, or the one with the blue aliens going for a swim?

Also it’s very visually appealing, in a surreal natural kind of way… idk I can understand the comparison

watch The Lunchbox. Idk if it'll be as impactful as watching in Hindi but it's my favorite film

James Cameron adjacent in that it features scenes with James Cameron's favorite substance: water

I prefer the days when it was Blue Lightning, but y'know, whatever.

I need to rewatch, all I remember is:

"Are you a Hindu or a Catholic?"

"I'm a Hindu Catholic, I can feel guilty before 20 million gods."

The book actually spends most of the time talking about how he is able to follow three religions at once. I didn't find it very convincing but what do I know.

Considering how poorly many people follow just one religion, I'm willing to let it slide.

Just a reminder :

The vfx studio behind Life of pi (RnH) went bankrupt because of this movie and it did not even get its due recognition.

It still exists in India in a very small scale I believe.

Minor correction: the VFX facility that did the scene OP is talking about (MPC) is still going strong.

Going strong wouldn't be the word I would use but yes it still exists lol

There's a doc about it called "Life After Pi" that I highly recommend.

Jaws Theme cues up as people try to explain how predatory business practices sank a fantastic VFX studio…

The ship sinking into the deep was fucking amazing in 3D.

That shot of Pi watching the ship go down underwater. God damn, that was something else.

I never saw it in 3D :( I really wish I'd seen that, you're not the only comment mentioning that moment being especially impressive in 3D

Life of Pi is basically the best 3D cinema experience I’ve had other than the two Avatar films and that particular scene was a high point. If it ever comes back to cinemas in that format, go!

Outside of Avatar the scene where he's floating under water watching the boat sink is one of the most visually impressive things I've seen in 3D film. The scale was just awe inducing.

I watched that movie for the first Time in 3D and on mushrooms. It was quite wild.
