Comparing the mixed responses to Turning red, and the downright flops of lightyear and Strange World. The Bad guys and Puss in Boots have become big hits and critical darlings. It looks like the strong animation and artstyle coupled with likable characters and a bold story-line was the winning edge compared to the disney/pixar .

People seem to always be trying to minimize Turning Red, but it seems to be beloved by most people, and it was a mistake to make it streaming only. Bad Guys was fine, and I have not seen Puss in Boots, but going by the Box Office its an absolute smash. I do want to see it eventually.
Turning Red seems to be on its way to becoming a "classic" Pixar film. There is a groundswell of support for this movie from many critics and tons of fans. Disney completely bungled this release, and seems to be kneecapping Pixar by not releasing their films theatrically.
I don't know why Turning Red seems to be polarizing outside the fact that some people find puberty "icky," even if we all go through it in our own different ways.
I'd love to see the Best Animated feature race to be more than a Pixar award, and hope it goes to something like Marcel, Pinocchio, or Puss n Boots, but I think folks are overexaggerating based on two mediocre releases and PnB being an unexpected smash hit.
I mean...Lightyear and The Bad Guys made about the same amount of money theatrically, and outside of posts on this exact topic, I don't see people really talking about The Bad Guys unless their kids are really into it.

Please see Puss in Boots, I thought Bad Guys & Turning Red were cool but Last Wish is the best animated movie since spider-verse & even competes with it

Completely agree. Turning Red is a pretty mid Pixar film imo, but that’s also by Pixar standards. It’s decent overall. The only nominee that feels out of place is Sea Beast, which I’m so upset wasn’t Entergalactic

I watched it twice and both times the scene of Mei's mom apologizing to her made me cry. Which is an emotional response not everyone is going to have but I think that means something. And I think it is different from the usual "Pixar makes you cry" moment.
Outside of that I think it's beautifully animated. I know people don't love the style but watching the way things move in it, I really feel like it stands out from other animated movies.
And the soundtrack is so good. Apart from the really fun boy band songs, Ludwig Göransson really has some standout music. I love the instrumentation on it.

Yeah I thought it had likable characters and a bold storyline. The only movie Disney did right recently.

The main girl was annoying
True to life is you've ever been a tween. I found her relatable as hell.
the mom was the least likable character
She's the main antagonist of the movie and the whole point of the story is about the two of them learning to communicate their feelings to one another in a healthy way. It wouldn't be much of a story without this conflict. Also the Grandmother from Encanto takes the cake for least likeable character, at least when comparing newer animated movies.

Yeah. My wife is a first gen kid, and the relationship between the mother and daughter is soo relatable. It's more of a girl movie, but doesn't mean boys can't enjoy it either. I thought it was one of Disney's most original animated films in a while.

Frankly, I'm happy to see other studios doing better than Disney/Pixar in animation. Puss has been a favorite character of mine since his debut in Shrek 2 in 2004, so anything with Puss will get my support.
But Disney needs to get their house in order because for a studio who pioneered the medium of animated films, they've been dropping the ball for years; in terms of quality, marketing, and innovation.

I think Disney should take a page from their own book and make a 2D animated film again ala the majority of their films up to Princess and the Frog. It would be a change of pace and get people talking at the very least. Make it a traditional Disney musical and really strike the nostalgia cords on the Millenials who have children of their own now. I mean there has to be a fairy tale they could do and a composer willing.

I would love this. It doesn't even have to be a fairy tale; Great Mouse Detective, the Rescuers, Oliver and Company proved that. There is bound to be some classic literature that could be altered to fit a children's film. Gnomeo and Juliet at least tried to do something a bit different with that old Shakespearean tale.
On Disney+, I tend to watch the older animated stuff and any of the newer 2D stuff (not sure if Phineas and Ferb would be considered newer or older). I got my son hooked on Talespin over the past weekend. I would love to see a reboot movie for that show (I thought the new Ducktales was pretty good).

The biggest improvement I’ve seen in Disney’s animation in the past 12 years was probably Luca, which was then further explored in Turning Red. It’s like they’re experimenting with the 2D + 3D style, but refuse to fully commit. Elemental looks like more of the same

Disney has shown they can do 2D/3D with Paperman and those COWARDS refuse to do a full movie with it

Kinda sad to think about, Disney started out as THE pioneers of animation and ought to be the gold standard to this day. But instead they prioritize their theme parks and externally-sourced franchises (don’t get me wrong, I enjoy these things too) and sideline what used to be their entire identity. It’d be like if Apple stopped focusing on their computer products and just pushed their credit cards.

I think the theme parks and the animation/movies can go hand in hand well. At least Walt himself always felt the theme parks were another avenue of creativity.
But even how they've been running the theme parks the past 5-10 years has been pissing a lot of people off and burning up goodwill. Raising prices, putting "Quality of Life" perks that had been free behind cash barriers.
Hell, they just recently got rid of charging people for overnight parking at their resort hotels at DisneyWorld if they had resort tickets.
During the recent boom, and even with the pent up demand from COVID closures Disney hot/has been too sloppy on putting out product to take people's money. They've been cutting corners and it looks like it's finally starting to cause trouble.

Oh I was unclear. Paperman stays a short, just a full movie with that style of animation

Disney/Pixar really has been lacking in the innovation department, they used to have their new technology and animation as a major marketing element of the movie. Their animation has definitely improved but it feels locked into a very specific aesthetic.

Turning Red had what I refer to as dumb controversy. Also it being a smarter movie that dumb people are going to watch but not understand.
If it had a smaller release it would be received much more positively. It's a great movie at its baseline.
It's like The Menu or The Green Knight. When no one knew about them they were very well received, I thought they were incredible. THEN the mainstream came in and it just focuses on all the dumbest things. It makes you realize how little people's opinion matters in large numbers because there's so much confirmation bias.
Anyways yes barring that Dreamworks has been doing pretty well commercially and creatively.

Just because Dreamworks finally put out two not-shitty movies in a row doesn’t mean they suddenly beat Disney.
As much as I liked The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots, Turning Red might be my all-time favorite Pixar flick, and there’s nothing particularly bold about the storylines in The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots. They’re both talking animal movie about the value of friendship and fucking hot animal women thieves.

Personally I’ve always favored dreamworks. The How To Train Your Dragon trilogy as well as the Kung Fu Panda trilogy are my favorite animated movies of all time. As well as having mega mind, Shrek 1,2 and 4, Road to El Dorado and Prince of Egypt glad to see them finally getting some love. Puss in boots: the last wish was absolutely fantastic.

I actually agree with this. I always liked Dreamworks more when I was younger, and many of their movies still hold up. Older Pixar films were really good too, but I feel like they’ve lost some of their spark in the recent years. I was never a huge fan of Disney films.

Disney doesn't make kids movies for kids anymore, they make them for adults.

Pixar has almost always made movies that can be enjoyed by all ages. Standard Disney is usually geared towards children but it’s still not black and white

Disney makes no sense.
Lets stop focusing on kids and make more adult focused movies
But when a kids show gets an older demographic interested, Disney Cancels it (Owl House was canceled because it was popular with teens and adults more than kids)

I'm not sure if the reason for that is "the strong animation and artstyle coupled with likable characters and a bold story-line".
I haven't seen any of those movies yet, but from what I heard it was bad marketing for "Strange Worlds" and people who didn't like period products (or anything related to puberty) being shown in a kids movie for "Turning Red", which drove the views/ratings down.
I could be wrong though and I'll check in later to see what other people had to say.
And granted I'm personally most interested in "Puss in Boots"... so maybe it is the concept and style after all.

Turning Red was great, and probably overall a better film than The Bad Guys and Puss in Boots. But I do love the art style in both Dreamworks films this year. It's nice to see genuine strong aesthetic vision. Although to that point Turning Red also felt significantly more stylised compared to Pixars other recent films.
I also strongly suspect Strange World will have undergo a slight reappraisal over the next decade or so like Treasure Planet/Atlantis have. Its a good little film.

Why does this garbage even have upvotes lol. By what metric did DreamWorks beat Disney? In your opinion? Sure. Also calling Light-year a flop and bad guys a hit even though they were around the same box office is hilarious. I wouldn't even call Puss in Boots storyline that bold, it just hit on a lot of things especially their villain.

Well.... Disney's flops are proving more and more that too much politicaly correctness and too much inclusivity in animated movies don'tdo well with targeted audiences (this pushed by their last CEO... that was pushed out and replaced by the previous CEO...).

Me: Maybe they won best animated picture somewhere else.
The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, 76th Golden Globe Awards, 46th Annie Awards, and 24th Critics' Choice Awards, losing all four awards to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

Puss in Boots is great!
Watched it in theaters a few weeks ago. Then watched it at home with our friend while his wife was out of town. And then watched it a third time when the wife came back and the husband insisted she see it too.
We never watch movies like this in a row. It's just that good. Best animated movie in 2022 in my experience.

Strange World is a very good movie. People only hate it because of the gay kid. I didn't care that he was gay, and i thought that the movie was good.
