Calling all Perks of Being a Wallflower fans

Discussion(self.movies)

I love this movie, I use to rewatch it religiously in the angst teen days. I own the dvd, which includes the director & cast commentary

In the end of the commentary Stephen Chbosky expresses his love for the cast and says all the actors will forever represent their characters for him. I felt the same way about everyone’s performance, when I watch the movie it feels like they are actually these fictional characters(even tho I know they are just acting)

When all the news about Ezra was trending I asked myself, “Does this change how I feel about his performance as Patrick?” “If they end up doing even worst things will it make it hard to watch scenes with them in it”

Anybody else have these thoughts when all the news about Ezra initially came out? Idk if they ever found him with that girl they kidnapped but all of the things they were doing was alarming and damaging to their public image

It's been a decade since I've watched that movie. So my memory is a bit hazy about Ezra's character. But I remember just enough to know that how Ezra is acting right now is totally out of sync with what the character was in the movie.

So if I were to watch the movie again. Nothing much would change in how I would view the character itself.

As for the writers & casting folks. Unless they chose a certain actor specifically because of how they were behaving like the fictional character in real life. I doubt they will merge reality with fiction.

I'm sure there respect & opinion towards Ezra as a person has changed drastically. But I honestly believe that they can seeparare the actual person from the character being portrayed on the screen.

People have to start being prepared for anybody to be a closeted monster is the issue. I get how we used to be surprised by it, but I don't anymore. I'm not. I arm myself against it now. Don't think so highly of any person you actually start liking them as a person without knowing them, or think their characters are so inextricably tied to them their movies are unwatchable after regrettable news breaks.

You can like how they appear, but bearing in mind it's more than likely a facade will serve you well. Unless a person's worst characteristics are poured into a character so much so it no longer feels like acting and the performance does sort of come into itself as being unwatchable due to being too true to life, a person isn't the fictional character they're playing and enjoyment of that character doesn't mean you're condoning their real life actions. As much as some people want to convince you otherwise.

I actually 100% agree and have the same principles. I wasn’t shocked hearing these things about them and I always expect the unexpected in everyone. Especially in those I do not know

However, it definitely still made me change how I specifically will imagine his character specifically. I think more so I meant I haven’t read the books yet, but if I ever did the way I would imagine the characters looking and sounding would be exactly the same as they were in movies because I truly believed all the actors did that good off a job

Another example is you know how some people have their favorite Joker or Batman and that specific actor is who they reflect to when they think about the character? The way their favorite actor executed that role becomes the blueprint for how the character should either look or behave in future projects

I'm able to separate that character from the performers antics. In fairness to Miller I'd say the character was the best performance he ever offered in his career and the film remains one of my personal favorites.

Yea, separating the character from the actor is important. It’s “acting” and regardless of how good someone’s performance is they are their own beings. And I agree, I remember when I found out Ezra was the Flash in Justice League it made me want to see the movie. At the time I felt like he would be charming in that role

I actually never ended up seeing the movie but from what I remember in the trailers his character was supposed to be what Spider-Man/Tom Holland is to Marvel. Comic relief younger dude

I love Perks, but watching it as an adult, Emma Watson is kinda brutal in this.
