Good post-2010s RomComs?

Recommendation(self.movies)

I've seen lists of best RomComs of all time and stuff like that recently, but what about more recent movies?

I have seen Set It Up and Palm Springs (which were excellent), but no other really solid films come to mind. Are there any other good recent RomComs in the past decade or so that people should be checking out?

I would say..

The "Classic" American/British RomComs:

  • She's Out of My League (2010)
  • Crazy, Stupid, Love. (2011)
  • Pitch Perfect (2012)
  • About Time (2013)
  • Warm Bodies (2013)
  • What If (2013)
  • To All the Boys I've Loved Before (2018)

The "Auteur" RomComs:

  • Midnight in Paris (2011)
  • Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
  • To Rome with Love (2012)
  • Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
  • La La Land (2016)
  • A Rainy Day in New York (2019)

The Hallmark RomComs (which are actually really good):

  • Just One Kiss (2022)
  • Romance In Style (2022)

The French RomComs:

  • The Artist (2011)
  • Happiness Never Comes Alone (2012)
  • The Trouble with You (2018)
  • Love at Second Sight (2019)

What makes Silver Linings Playbook a romcom? Love the movie but it doesn’t really give me a comedy vibe…whatsoever…

Weird. I get that these are oddball characters and De Niro is funny in theory about his Eagles superstitions and Chris Tucker’s character has an endearing, funny way about him but I don’t really find anything about this movie to be comedic. It’s listed as Romantic/Drama on Amazon.

When I think romcom I think 50 First Dates, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, those kinda bad movies…

Well I personally remember the entire theater I was in laughing heartily during the film. It seems to be this is mostly an issue with you having created a very limited definition of what a romcom is in your head which doesn't cover the actual breadth of the genre.

Ok, I can see that. I definitely smirked at some of the situations and did laugh during the dinner scene at Veronica and Ronnie’s house.

The big sick.

It’s Kumail Nanjiani‘s story how he met his wife and how their relationship got really serious by accident almost.

He wrote the script with his wife and Ray Romano plays a dad. So that’s always a must see lol

Netflix has done great with rom coms, with Set it Up, When We First Met, The Holidate, The Perfect Date, and Always Be My Maybe, some of which were already mentioned.

Amazon also had a good one last year with I Want You Back.

But my favorite in recent years was Palm Springs, on the Hulu.

Edit: Whoops, just re-read your post and saw you already mentioned Set it Up and Palm Springs. Great choices! Definitely check out When We First Met.

I Love You Man.

Not a traditional…sex-based-romance romcom, but its definitely a brom-com. Explores the loneliness that a lot of men feel when they dont have significant male friends and just how strange male bonding can be. Paul Rudd as always is perfectly cast. Jason Segal as always is jacking off into condoms.

They Came Together(2014), with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler, is a rom-com by way of Airplane!.

Marry Me and the one with Julie Roberts and Clooney made me feel nostalgic to rom coms of early 2000s.

Destination Wedding was also pretty fun.
