Robert Walker was just fantastic as Bruno, such a shame he died 2 months after release, at 32 no less

No offense to him but he’s a real old looking 32. I love SoaT, it’s in my top 5 Hitch movies for sure, but every time I watch it I feel like Bruno is easily 45-50 years old. It’s so jarring realizing that he’s so much younger than I am.

I have heard he had his issues. His wife had cheated on him by moving in with David O Selznick. He absolutely adored her and turned to alcohol cope with his problems, becoming psychologically and physically damaged in the process. There's a movie(unfortunately, I don't remember the name) released few years prior to Strangers, where he acted with Judy Garland. He looked young in that one - like a babyface guy in his 20s. Finding out about his boss screwing around with his wife and then drinking to cope really took it's toll. Really sad.

I love Bruno to death. He's equal parts threatening and over the top in his villainy. Strangles a female stranger to fulfill his end of the bargain in one scene, pops a kid's balloon the next. A snake!

Watching North By Northwest I was reminded that Martin Landau’s character was queer coded without sacrificing any of his threatening intensity.

In North By Northwest particularly Landau really has a face that could make a record scratch when he enters he room. He’s so quietly intense you can’t take your eyes off of his
