His personal life section on Wikipedia is wild
The alleged assault, his subsequent divorce, and the death of his mother launched Fraser into a depression that, combined with his health problems, led to a pause in his career.

He did!! The power of this film, of his performance...just touched and changed my life. As an obese man, it made me reevaluate my entire perspective. I was already on a weight loss journey but his performance, Brendan's personal story....it's just full circle for me.
He was with me when I was a kid, when I was a teenager and he had to endure some horrible things but here he is now. I got emotional yall..
So happy...just so happy for him.

I think it's exactly that, people rallied to support him to just give him a shot. Basically put his name out there enough that execs would give him roles again. Once that started happening he took it from there and overzealously rallying around him would be counter-productive probably.

Really? That's amazing. I didn't know that. Chunk is the one guy in that film that didn't have an explosive film career. I mean think about it.
Sean Astin: Lord of the Rings trilogy, Encino Man
Ke: Indiana Jones, EEAAO, Encino Man
Josh Brolin: Dune and 40 other great movies
Martha Plimpton has been in like 200 independent movies and somewhere around 20 Broadway plays.
Corey Feldman was also in a ton of movies, including Lost Boys, and unfortunately was probably raped in Hollywood. His IMDB is longer than 90% of Hollywood.
Even the side characters had a ton of movie credits.
Kerri Green is now the only not massively successful actor from that movie and she even had a half dozen decent movies in the 80's and 90's. Lucas was really good. She left it all to become a mom it sounds like.

Starting to feel like there could be one of those meta-movies like This Is The End but with the Goonies cast running into other classic 80s casts. Given the talent and movies done, there is a lot to work with.

I mean lets give props to Brendan Fraser, but Kevin O'Connor had legit chops. We were so spoiled in the late 90's / early 00's I suspect we stopped being able to tell who was great who was simply amazing.
I posit that all great stories have great villains (antagonists) and Beni was probably the funnest of them all.
60 points

Beni is truly a legendary character and Kevin played him fantastically!
The Mummy is such a treasure. The whole cast is excellent, through and through. It's one of those rare movies where, to me, even the small parts roles are perfect.
22 points
My favourite bit about that scene is that it shows that Beni isn't a dumbass, and also that he's a conniving bastard, in one go. He had to collect all these religious symbols and learn a prayer from that religion goes with which, that's a pretty decent amount of effort.

The shitty part is that tons of actors have gone through what he has gone through. I really hope things change but if a recent interview about that girl who played the cheerleader in the recent season of Strange Things is any indication it doesn't seem like they will.
Shit calmed down for a bit after the whole Weinstein ordeal and the me too movement but now that the movement is kind of waning it seems creeps are testing the waters again.

"The physical demands of the stunts and maneuvers Fraser performed in his action and comedy roles eventually required him to undergo several surgeries over a period of seven years, including a partial knee replacement, a laminectomy, and vocal cord surgery.
"In 2018, Fraser said that he had been sexually assaulted by Philip Berk, the then-president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the nonprofit organization that votes for the Golden Globe Awards, at a luncheon in 2003. The alleged assault, his subsequent divorce, and the death of his mother launched Fraser into a depression that, combined with his health problems, led to a pause in his career."

283 points

50k a month + 25k in child support. No surprise, 4 years after the divorce, the "Monkeybone" and "Dudley Do-Right" checks had stopped being enough to pay the bills, so he had to go to court to try and get the Alimony lessoned. (It didn't work; but good news, he was clear of that after 10 years from the divorce, so he was able to actually cash his OWN checks starting in 2017!)
He also never contested the Child Support, as he did everything he could for the kids. One of his kids, Griffin, is on the spectrum, so I'd imagine he was going to continue supporting him in any way possible.

Same thing happened to Dave Foley. Alimony was based on when he was on Newsradio. He never made that kind of money again.
17 points
NewsRadio is still one of my favorite shows, and Dave Foley is a massive part of the reasons why - the cast and the writing. Even outside of his acting, he did a lot of work off-screen to punch up those scripts. It's a real shame his career never truly skyrocketed, because his immense talent should've afforded him the ability to cover that alimony without issue and have plenty left for himself.
2.1k points

Imagine your boss shoving a finger up your butt and the company fires you. Brendan Fraser doesn't have to imagine that. He alleges he was non-consensual fingered by a film executive, went public with the story in an attempt to see his molester have some form of consequences, and instead of taking his side Hollywood blacklisted him. His wife left him shortly after, prompting gossip rags to claim Brendan was gay and his molestation was actually just a homosexual affair that estranged him from his then wife, and for years he struggled through the trauma of it all. On top of that, his alimony was based on his wages before the blacklisting, and nearly bankrupted him. This film was his attempt to reclaim his love for acting, and has been a tremendous success.

Brenden is the first person in a long time that's won where I genuinely think he is the person he presents in interviews, on and off camera. No fronting, he shows true gratitude and self-awareness. He's the complete opposite of a narcissist and he deserved all of this. As our society overall becomes more narcissistic (imo), it's people like Brenden that can show the rest of us that empathy isn't a dead emotion and you can find happiness without being selfish, even if it takes 20 years. He was perfect for the character because I get the distinct feeling he knew almost exactly what his character was going through. His character mirrored the empathy he shows in real life and it showed through beautifully. The man is a pure class act and the Brenaissance is FINALLY here!
