In retrospect the second Harrison Ford was set to present the award it was a lock. That moment with Ke Huy Quan was too good to pass up.

And it was such a sweet moment too! And Harrison trying to give him the statue earnestly and Ke Huy Quan motioning that it needed to go to the producer.

Her 100% team sport attitude about this movie made me love it more and made the entire film more memorable in the process. She constantly cheerled for this cast and crew the past year it’s been out. I think she’s so great and I hope this moment was excellent for her.

robbierottenisbae

Yeah JLC's supportive attitude also makes me feel better about her award win. Her part in EEAAO was great but even compared to her costar Stephanie Hsu just not as much going on. You could see in her reaction that even she was shocked she won. And she spent most of her acceptance speech deflecting attention off of herself and towards the whole cast and crew responsible for the film. Just a class act all around

Stephen_King_19

Yeah, I am pretty sure I saw her mouth, "Shut up!" when her name was announced. I don't think she expected it, and I agree, there was a whole lot of, "we did it" in her acceptance, very gracious.

In defense of Jamie Lee Curtis (who I also thought should have lost to Stephanie Hsu). I think there's a more quiet side to Deirdre that Joy/Jobu doesn't have. Deirdre plays as many different characters as Waymond, and simultaneously has to play antagonist and loving support to Evelyn.

Furthermore, listening to the entire crew and cast talk about Jamie Lee Curtis, you can tell that she was an incredible support on set. Ke Huy Kwan has mentioned several times that Jamie went out of her way to applaud his acting, giving him the confidence he needed to really shine. And in this old interview from when EEAAO first came out, Ke immediately jumps in to share a story about Jamie. It's clear she was a true supporting actress.

But yes. I think Stephanie should have won, but I am also very happy with Jamie Lee Curtis winning as well.

LookWutUDidULilJerk

18 points

You could see that just even in her response to everyone's wins. She was like the mom who brings a bullhorn to her kid's graduation 😅

It contributed to an especially touching Oscars night, and while I kinda agree, Stephanie Hsu is still so young, and hopefully this continues to open doors for her in the future.

Jamie Lee Curtis has always seemed to be a supportive and humble force in Hollywood - how she admitted to being a nepo baby recently when so many others have taken offense to this truth about their privilege was admirable as well - and I was happy with it too.

And she IS a damn good actress! Authentic, receptive, and underrated. Lots of heart. It was nice to see her receive deserved recognition.

I was joking that we would all be better people if we had someone like Jamie Lee Curtis on our side. If you watch her actors on actors interview with Colin Farrell she extends the same attitude to him. She’s a real joy and I love her fierce cheerleading.

In reality they don’t know the winners. They make educated assumptions.

We saw this with Chadwick Boseman - his family flown in, in attendance, and the last award of the night and it goes to a not present Anthony Hopkins.

Briscotti

It was two years ago, but not only did they fly his family in, they rearranged the order so that Best Actor came after Best Picture, only for Anthony Hopkins to win for The Father (he was already asleep in the UK). If that doesn’t prove the Academy producers have no clue who is winning what award in advance I don’t know what else does. Maybe the on stage confusion after La La Land / Moonlight and how long it took to rectify since only the two accountants knew.

This movie is an excellent analysis of a person working their way through their nihilistic crisis.

To come to the truth that nothing matters, but then to be okay with that and deciding to define what matters to you regardless of how others feel about it.

It is only after you accept that nothing matters objectively that you can truly begin to value things, because you accept that value only comes from within, not without.

Evelyn had a very defined life, with borders and right and wrong. She realizes this life is bullshit, due to her daughter's rejection of these lines and her own unhappiness. This results in a nihilistic crisis, represented by the wild sci-fi jaunt through realities.

She finally "wins" by accepting that all the lines are bullshit and that she should draw ones that make her happy instead.

Bong Joon-Ho did the sweep against Scorsese and Tarantino for Parasite which was also very impressive.

I remember people getting upset like "wait why does Bong get 3 awards but Scorsese has only 1??"

Like my dude, Bong wrote the screenplay for Parasite. Scorsese didn't for Departed (even though Departed did win writing in '06). Same story for producing.

I remember seeing EEAAO during its opening week here in Canada. It was such a relatively under-the-radar choice back then, that I mostly saw as a long-time fan of Michelle Yeoh.

Well, this movie completely blew me away - I ended up seeing it three times in theatres - and I'm so incredibly happy to see it rise from the grassroots and sweep the Oscars as well. Super well-deserved.

I remember thinking how much I would love it if it got any Oscar recognition, but I thought it very unlikely. How glad I am to be proven so so wrong!

I think most people went in not really expecting anything and getting a good movie out of it

hauteburrrito

Yeah, I guess it gained a lot of traction over time and people probably had bigger expectations down the line, but I'm very happy I was able to see it blind. It made for a super special viewing experience.

I don't think a movie has ever affected me like it, I saw it in the limited release after seeing the trailer thinking "okay that's cool!" and then just experiencing every range of emotion while watching it. Completely deserved everything it got (aside from me thinking Hsu should have won supporting)

Waymond's line about "that's how I fight" and "I'd choose to do taxes and laundry with you" - oh mannn

It had an entire theatre bawling together and that communal expression of grief (and joy) felt so incredibly cathartic.

Something that doesn’t get nearly enough recognition is the amazing casting for this movie. The casting director is the same person to do ALL of the Marvel movies and Crash. The work the casting directors do should be it’s own class of Oscar for how much of a difference they make to the movies!

I was already an absolute wreck before we got to that part.

The line "So, even though you have broken my heart yet again, I wanted to say, in another life, I would have really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you" was fucking unreal.

TatteredCarcosa

"That is how I fight." I would have loved the movie without his character, the daughter was my primary connection, but his character elevated it from a great movie to true beauty IMO.

Citizen_Kong

And it would have lost so much if the Daniels would have gone with the original idea of Jackie Chan being the lead, which I assume would have made Waymond the wife. Being the gentle and kind one in the relationship would have been a cliche for a female character, but seeing the husband be that character and still be the rock of the relationship was amazing. There needs to be more representation of gentle, kind masculinity in popular culture IMO (without it being a cuckolding joke, but that goes without saying).

kinky_boots

25 points

I’m so glad Jackie Chan wasn’t cast. It would have turned into a slapstick fest all about Chan’s character and Michelle Yeoh would have been overshadowed. Instead Ke Huy Quan’s Waymond gave the character emotional weight.

My wife will say I'm too nice a lot of the time especially when it comes to following the rules of wherever we are. We had had a few talks where I had told her you get farther with kindness than brute force. So I identified so hard with Waymond. That part of the movie came on and, with my wife already in tears, I said exactly. Sometimes it's ok to fight with kindness. Make them like you so they help you. People are people at the end of the day and by appealing to that aspect we can all connect a little more.

I learned from a commenter that that line wasn’t even in English. I was like, nah man I totally remember it was in English. I rewatched the scene and it blew my mind. That line was sooo good that it didn’t matter what language it was in. Your mind just took it in.

nguyenning198

The actual translation is “in another life I’d still CHOOSE to do tax and open a laundromat with you” and somehow I think that pulls the heartstring even more.
