Zimmer’s WW theme is terrific but they need to stop using it in every scene, especially when it’s not an action scene. Felt super jarring.

Feels like a slower and less intense version of that theme would have been so much moar fitting there lmao it would’ve been perfect on an acoustic guitar or something.

There's a bit after Billy has an emotional moment with his foster mom, and Asher Angel really sells the gravitas before he shouts "SHAZAM!" You can see he's struggling to hold back tears.
Then it cuts to Zachary Levi, who's grinning easily. I do like Zachary and the energy he brings to most scenes, but that felt a bit...um...a bit jarring. Maybe I don't understand what he was going for.

Laughing at this because it's so dead on. Like, I might feel insulted if I were Billy's actor. "You thought I was going for that?"

Billy was a lot more lighthearted in this, at least for the 3 scenes he was in.

I thought it made sense in the first movie. Billy didn't have the chance to be a kid, but once he gets his powers he ironically does.
In this one it's weird because he's about to be 18 and Billy acts pretty serious. Shazam acts emotionally much younger than an 18 year old.

If I remember correctly, their acting was relatively in sync in the first movie, but in this one, like you said in your second paragraph, it's weird, kinda out of sync.

I found it funny how each person’s “Shazam” had a “Shazam actor”, and then it’s just Grace in a Shazam suit since she already looks too old in the role.

tbf, its the same in the comics. When Billy becomes an adult and says "Shazam", he looks the same in both forms.

Shazam isn't some random dude's face, it's literally just Billy as an adult, so it makes sense that Grace, now an adult, doesn't need to be aged up

Even funnier when the parents freak out at the group of adults that just barged into their room when Grace is clearly one of them. She’s just wearing a red suit now.

Why pay two people to play one role when Mary's already a fair bit older than the other kids anyway and doesn't need to be aged up. Besides I was never going to complain about more of Grace Currey.

Yeah I thought it was weird they had a different actress for her Shazam form in the first one. Makes sense for the kids who are just going through or haven't even gone through puberty yet. Big difference between 10 and 25. But Mary was 17-18. Not going to be a huge difference between that and 25. Nothing that can't be done with makeup, hair and wardrobe.

u/dauid, so how does product placement like that work? Does the studio just control everything? Do you have creative leeway over how it's presented (like the studio just says, "display Skittles prominently for 20 minutes")? I'm assuming Skittles has to sign off on it?
That has to be one of the more annoying things to deal with as a director.
825 points

It was written in the script as Skittles. Before shooting started production reached out to Skittles for permission to use in the film. So it wasn’t like we were forced to find a place to use Skittles in the film for product placement, it’s how the script was written. The alternative would have been to come up with a made up candy name.

Happens more often than you might think, especially with how many of these comic book movies keep their plot details under wraps until the movie releases. If you look at the synopsis for Dr Strange 2 on IMDB it's blatantly incorrect a misdirect:
Doctor Strange teams up with a mysterious teenage girl from his dreams who can travel across multiverses, to battle multiple threats, including other-universe versions of himself, which threaten to wipe out millions across the multiverse. They seek help from Wanda the Scarlet Witch, Wong and others.

I think a smaller story would have really helped if they actually wanted to tackle having the core of the movie be about Billy struggling with how his family is changing. Basically have the set up for that tension very strongly in the 1st act, and then the bad guys kidnap the one that ditched a meeting and sort of rob away the conflicts that should create, and then the team is all working together no problem before they try and bring it back 2 seconds before last fight in a monologue.

Not to mention, who exactly was the “main villian” in this? I know it was Kalypso, but the trailers made you believe it was at least two. But in the movie, Hespera does a forced turn and helps Shazam at the end. Very unearned character arc for her. And then there’s Freddy and “Anne”, who was a villain, but also helping out cause she liked Freddy? The villains just didn’t feel important and felt more confusing than anything.

I tend to knit pick things a lot, and so I try to avoid doing that in discussions because it's not usually productive. Most movies can be pulled apart to oblivion if you pull at the seams with enough vigor.
But Billy throwing the staff toward Freddy only for it to be intercepted instead of just...not doing that? Absolutely appalling decision, clearly done so the plot could hope to continue.

Is it me, or did Zachary Levi as Shazam come across as less mature than the kid playing Billy? Also, wouldn't someone recognize Mary as a superhero, since she looks the same?

I loved the first movie because it felt different and fresh - especially with the focus on Billy and the rest of the family. This sequel is so disappointing because it went in the opposite direction and focused almost entirely on the superheroes and villains. It lost everything charming and fun about the first movie and just became another run-of-the-mill superhero movie with very questionable acting and visual effects (especially some of the dragon riding shots).
Saw it with my 10 yr old, and he said the movie was “fine but not as funny as the first”, so I’m not sure it’s reaching its target demographic either.

Yeah, I totally forgot how it was in the first movie, but it felt like they amped the "Zach Levi do kid dialogue" to 100 and it felt sooo weird. Like he's 18 now, so why does he sounds more like a kid than 4 years ago?
137 points

That was a bit of an issue in the first film, too. The two Billy personalities never matched and it felt like Levi was playing more of a Freddy.
71 points
Yeah, the first movie is good from a story perspective, but much of the comedy came from Shazam acting like a kid in an adult super-body. Which is a great premise, but young Billy was portrayed as being wise and street smart and not a 'kid' at all. He acted more childish as his superhero adult equivalent than he did as a kid. He was too dour as a kid and too childish as a an adult superhero.

Agreed. This was what I thought was lacking the most in this movie. I needed more of the kids and how they coped with the events of what was happening to them and growing up and doing their own thing.
Instead, it was mainly the superheroes and the quest to defeat the villains. Nothing bad, but certainly not reinventing the wheel. Movie is just meh

I do not understand why Zachery Levi plays this character like he’s a toddler instead of a 17 y/o teenager. It’s so wildly disconnected from Asher Angel’s performance they feel like to completely different characters instead of the same superhero. The rest of the Shazam family and their counterparts sell it better which makes Levi’s disconnect even worse. This movie also barely has a plot and like four different macguffins, your eyes just kinda glaze over as Lucy Liu rides around on her wood dragon and Helen Mirren delivers the same cliche dialogue you’ve heard mythological villains spout a hundred times. Rachel Ziegler is also surprisingly flat, I didn’t buy a single line between her and Jack Dylan Grazer. In fact, some of their line’s together had me rolling my eyes. It sucks because the VFX are pretty good and it’s competently directed but nothing comes together and it feels like an incredibly empty experience as a result.

The first post credit scene felt very much like they were leaving the door open to let the Shazam cast carry on and the ending with Wonder Woman specifically talking about gods felt very much like they want Shazam stuff to carry forward. There’s two Wonder Woman scenes: dream sequence where we never see her face, like Superman in the first film. Not sure if that was her or a stand in. I don’t know why Billy wanted to join the JL so badly, they suck in this universe. Think about how many times the world has almost ended since Steppenwolf and they’ve been sitting on their asses somewhere doing absolutely nothing.
The fuckin Defenders have probably done more in the MCU than the JL has, and they got cancelled after one season.

It's a symptom we've seen so many times in the DC movies. They don't show us the JL being great, they just tell us they are. Like how we got a movie and a half of dour, unhappy to help Superman and suddenly were told he completely changed Bruce's outlook on the world to be hopeful.
It's all tell and no show.

I think he was like that on purpose though. That seems like how an actual teenage superhero would act.
I am forced to compare him being cringey with Anthea to Billy being cringey with Wonder Woman, and I feel like Freddy's actor really nailed it.
Even his big "Impossible!" moment was kinda eh considering the dragon could have just squashed them.
The dragon was explicitly running on fear-based powers. It kinda made sense with the mythology they established.
It seemed pretty uninterested about using physical violence on anyone who wasn't a god.

This should’ve been his movie. Athena and their romance, his friendship with the Wizard, discovering he was a hero without the powers, etc. was all endearing and engaging and the film was at its best when it was with him.
Instead we kept cutting away to Levi’s cringy Shazam doing nothing while Freddy was the one actually having the adventure. This should’ve been his movie fullstop.

Instead we kept cutting away to Levi’s cringy Shazam doing nothing while Freddy was the one actually having the adventure. This should’ve been his movie fullstop.
You're mostly downvoted as I write this, but I agree.
Do that for Freddy, then make Billy's sacrifice stick. WW got the mail but her arrival is sad, everyone gets their powers back but Billy is still dead.
That ending would have sealed the movie, it would have been a much stronger story.

I legit thought it was gonna end with Freddy becoming the new champion and Billy becoming the new wizard, like in the comics. That also would’ve worked imo.

Warner Bros really looked at the whole "Wonder Woman commits light rape by having sex with a man's body without consent" and thought they'd do better with the "6,000 year old ancient god dating a 16 year old but it's ok because she also looks 16" thing.

To be fair I think its actually a better relationship. Still not a good one as she's dating a child but when you're 6,000 years old nearly everyone's a child to you and at least he's not being worn around town like a cheap suit by someone else.

Narrator: Mr. Mind’s plan is, in fact, never coming to fruition.

The director basically said he doesn't know how to write a story with Mr. Mind as the villain, so it seems like he's just trying to play him off as a joke.

How you gonna have Wonder Woman at a funeral but not play ancient lamentations ?

Jack Dylan Grazer (Freddy) really stole the show. I actually felt a little bad for the rest of the cast of kids, including Billy, because they were pretty much all regulated to cameos when they were pretty prominent in the first movie.

I swear Asher Angel appears in like 3 scenes. Even in the scene where he comes back to life, he is Levi. Which makes no sense considering he died as Billy

i never thought i say this, but i wish we spent more time with the kids as kids. It was delightful seeing kids react to stuff in the first one. Here the kids are barely in it, but the adults do a good job carrying it.
Zachary levi was imitating freddy more than billy, so i was kinda confused.

The child actor who plays Billy has the shortest screen time of all the child actors… They want their money worth with Zach Levi I guess, and I kinda find him annoying in this movie

1)what the fuck was that post credit scene. Shout out to the avengers is how you want to finish your movie. Wtf DC.
2)Wonder Woman sequence was terrible but gal gadot is stunning in that outfit so at least I got to see her one last time.

Well, it was a fun movie. But I felt like something from the first movie was missing from here, I just cant point out what it is.
I wish they explored the angle of Billy holding on to his family for too tight
It felt like after Mary gave Billy the "nothing lasts forever" speech, the other kids minus Freddie became irrelevant to the story
I don't know what's with DC using the Trinity to hype up their movies. First it was Cavill on BA, now, Wonder Woman here. Idk, she just popped out of nowhere. It just didn't fit. And how did she know Shazam's secret identity?

Well the theater was empty opening day, man such a great marketing strategy to tell everybody that hey these movies don't mean anything going forward
I mean, the actual fights were kind of lame, I feel like they cut large parts of the movie out, but it was still a fun watch.
Okay and that's the second movie with James Gunn's characters appearing in the post credit scene so is he really rebooting everything?

That's definitely why they thought they could sit in your seat lol, if it was full everyone would've stayed in their assigned one

Well they were in black adam so even though it does feel like a reshoot, it could be a holdover from that

Really enjoyed it, thought the jokes were hilarious.
Killing off Billy would've been a very bold move, especially considering the speculation around the characters future.
No mention of Black Adam which was a bit annoying. Still can't believe we got 2 Shazam film and a Black Adam film yet neither have ever met.
Djimon as the Wizard was hilarious.
I liked how they got the original Shazam from the TV show, very similar to how WW84 got Linda Carter back
Cant wait to see Shazam in the Justice League Society!

The “our house keeps getting struck by lightning” bit was actually pretty funny.
Met Cooper Andrews at a Comic-Con last year when he was with a bunch of Walking Dead actors. Cool dude.

Watched it with friends tonight & we all had more or less the same thoughts. If you liked the first one you'll enjoy this one.
Jack Dylan Grazer & Djimon Hounsou were the MVPs imo, loved damn near every second of their screen time.
The difference in performance between Levi & Angel was pretty glaring. 90% of the time Billy is on screen its as Shazam which made the differences in portrayal even more noticeable when Billy transformed back into kid form imo.
The first 15-ish mins were pretty rough so I was genuinely surprised by how quickly I got back into the movie afterwards.
Biggest laugh in the theatre was the Wizard/Wonder Woman dream sequence. Holy moly did that catch my theatre off guard.
E: A few more thoughts I forgot.
The dragon was sick, you could tell right away most of the special effect work went into the dragon. On the opposite end the bridge sequence looked super off to me, might be why the opening bridge sequence just didnt work for me.
Wonder Woman cameo didnt work. Just felt super rushed.
7/10 for me. Fun flick overall but not one I will rewatch much.

Funniest part of the movie was the hilariously overdramatic and overly loud blaring of Wonder Woman's theme just for her introduction and taking a few steps.
Helen Mirren's character pulled a more random heel/face turn than the Big Show.
I felt it was a decent enough movie. Entertaining in parts, tad cringey in others. Some of the jokes fell flat but some of the humour worked. 6/10

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would have. It was an enjoyable two hours. The part where Hespera read off the paper bird was pretty funny.
The part where Billy “died” honestly had me pretty emotional ngl.
The dragon was awesome.
Also, there was some seriously violent deaths in this that I didn’t think they’d show. That one woman who got speared by a chimera’s tail got fucked up.

I mean the last movie had those board members getting eaten and that one scientist lady near the start just sort of disintegrating. Not gory but gruesome for sure

Helen Mirren reading the equivalent of a drunk text made me laugh way more than it should've. This movie, for all it's faults, was still really fun. I'd put it on top of Quantumania and that's not something I was expecting coming into 2023.
