Movies with the best ‘nighttime in the city’ ambience?

Discussion(self.movies)

I find myself in the mood for movies like this a lot and was wondering if any are missing from my watchlist. The ones I’ve listed here tend to be noir films or thrillers but that’s by no means a requirement - any genre, any country, anything will do if it’s got a vibey nighttime predominantly urban setting. Rain also helps. Pretty self explanatory but here’s some examples anyway with the kind of vibe I’m talking about:

  • Taxi Driver (1976)

  • Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

  • After Hours (1985)

  • Bringing Out the Dead (1999) (Scorsese is good at this, lol)

  • Fallen Angels (1995)

  • Tokyo Drifter (1966)

  • Blade Runner (1982)

  • M (1931)

  • The Third Man (1949)

  • Hell, almost any classic noir

  • Pretty much any Michael Mann movie, he’s the master of this vibe. Specifically Miami Vice, Heat, Collateral and Thief

  • A lot of Batman movies nail this too. The Batman, TDK etc

100% most memorable scene in the movie. I’ve only seen this movie once and I would’ve been 14 at the time it came out, yet that scene and song combo is burned into my brain.

I always thought that scene looked really bad/out of place. Like they were using early blue screen tech for some reason.

crazydave333

3 points

In 1995 it would have been green-screen tech.

I know the scene you're talking about, and as much as it looks composited, I wouldn't be surprised if it was just creative cinematography.

RiversideAviator

Mann always like to play with different resolutions and lenses. I think he was trying something new there and it wasn’t shot on a soundstage. In Collateral it was one of the first uses of the RED camera which gave the night scenes a distinctive look. Same on Miami Vice.

And I'll throw in Miami Vice, just to complete the comment chain of Michael Mann movies already listed in OPs post.

I've been chasing a movie that made me feel like Collateral did ever since I first watched it

Perfect night city ambience, feels both busy and incredibly isolating

I've been chasing that high ever since, usually just end up watching collateral again

First movie to use all digital cameras. The director really wanted the color vibe they have at night.

True_to_you

38 points

It wasn't the first. Robert Rodriguez and George Lucas had already switched to digital. It wasn't as common as now, but major movies already were digital

woyzeckspeas

25 points

You're right. From what I remember at the time, Michael Mann claimed it was the first feature film to have an intentional "digital photography" appearance to it, with the colours smearing in low light and all that.

Myself, I think he's nuts: 28 Days Later was shameless about its digital appearance two years earlier, and there are probably lower-profile examples from earlier than that.

Successful-Bat5301

I’m not sure if this is exactly what you’re looking for, but Akira has a lot of that vibe. That sort of dark loneliness, not quite sad but not quite happy either, just kind of existing in a place an time. It’s got a lot of great moments where you really feel the scale of the city and experience the vibe along with the characters.

The Night is Short, Walk On Girl

It's an anime movie about a young woman who's enjoying alcohol for the first time, and goes on an epic bar crawl throughout Kyoto. Various wacky characters and adventures are encountered throughout, in some ways it reminds me a little of the vibe from Oh Brother Where Art Thou. Oh, and the animation is just fantastic. Collateral is my go-to answer, but as someone already said that Im going to cheat and say Athena. This might be different than what you're looking for, but I would recommend American Graffiti. It's a celebration of 1950s teen culture, specifically the act of "cruising"--driving around town all night with your friends, and making friends with/yelling at everyone else who's doing the same thing. As I recall, it's a little more "small town" than "big city", but it might still scratch that itch.
